I need help rebutting this https://musicbrainz.org/edit/33586314

      • kepstin
man, I was gonna try to write something following the style principles, but according to https://musicbrainz.org/doc/Style/Principle "If no definite proof can be found for the correct spelling/punctuation, the most common version should be used." would apply here :/

      • kepstin
curse our conflicting and ambiguous guidelines!
      • 2015-08-10 22201, 2015

      • kepstin links to the Artist Intent page instead without mentioning the style principles ;)

      • kepstin
http://www.girlsgenerationusa.com/ is kind of funny, the page title has no ' or ’ at all, and the banner at the top uses a ’, while all the content appears to use '
      • 2015-08-10 22213, 2015

      • kepstin
that page looks kind of outdated tho :/
      • 2015-08-10 22223, 2015

      • Nyanko-sensei
it's typeset with ’ on all the scans
      • 2015-08-10 22237, 2015

      • hibiscuskazeneko
        no accounting for font variation?
      • 2015-08-10 22204, 2015

      • Nyanko-sensei
some of the fonts they use have identical ' and ’ glyphs
      • 2015-08-10 22236, 2015

      • kepstin
it's fairly rare for fonts to use the same ' and ’ glyphs, particularly if there's a distinct curve to them, because then something 'quoted like this' would look bad.
      • 2015-08-10 22250, 2015

      • kepstin
        but it does happen, yeah
      • 2015-08-10 22234, 2015

      • kepstin
notably, there's some spots on their official site where the ’ is used, e.g. in the "Career" section of http://girlsgeneration.smtown.com/
      • 2015-08-10 22204, 2015

      • kepstin
(the font I see it in has very distinct glyphs)
      • 2015-08-10 22216, 2015

      • kepstin
meanwhile at the top of the page it uses '
      • 2015-08-10 22253, 2015

      • Nyanko-sensei
the band logo font uses ’ though
      • 2015-08-10 22227, 2015

      • kepstin
then of course there's that mini-album where it's written GIRLS⁴ GENERATION :)
      • 2015-08-10 22241, 2015

      • Nyanko-sensei
also, I never bothered to check how they look like... are you sure they're not all twins? or at least sisters O_O
      • 2015-08-10 22204, 2015

      • hibiscuskazeneko
They're not related. They've all had extensive plastic surgery.
      • 2015-08-10 22226, 2015

      • kepstin
they all have very distinct hairstyles, at least.
      • 2015-08-10 22244, 2015

      • kepstin
so yeah, based on our research i'd put it down as 'official use is inconsistent, prefer the musicbrainz guidelines'
      • 2015-08-10 22259, 2015

      • Nyanko-sensei

there we go. took me a weekend, but I finally have a replaygain tool that works with ogg opus files (and some other formats) and mostly doesn't suck
      • 2015-08-10 22217, 2015

      • Nyanko-sensei
        foobar didn't?
      • 2015-08-10 22231, 2015

      • kepstin
foobar requires wine, and I don't like the way it tags ogg opus files
      • 2015-08-10 22246, 2015

      • kepstin
(it more or less follows the spec, but most apps don't support the spec)
      • 2015-08-10 22217, 2015

      • kepstin
the spec being "use this weird opus-specific tag instead of the same replaygain tags in every other format"
      • 2015-08-10 22232, 2015

      • Nyanko-sensei
        sounds like iTunes >_>
      • 2015-08-10 22239, 2015

      • kepstin
meanwhile, other than foobar, nothing supports the opus-specific tag
      • 2015-08-10 22253, 2015

      • kepstin
and all apps *including foobar* still read replaygain tags from opus files if they're present
      • 2015-08-10 22215, 2015

      • Nyanko-sensei
        I stopped using replaygain
      • 2015-08-10 22250, 2015

      • kepstin
I use it because it's supported by all my players, and I'm retagging stuff anyways so might as well scan it.

      • 2015-08-10 22210, 2015

      • Nyanko-sensei
my problem is not with replaygain per se, it's the shoddy mastering of doujin/indie music
      • 2015-08-10 22218, 2015

      • kepstin
my multithreaded scanning speed probably gets close to foobar2000's speed :)

I wanted some files my wife bought in my Google Play Music... they rejected the upload because the file was bought by another google play user. That was some while ago though. hi there… I have an LC code that is not yet on MB here but I see at least 3 “labels” on the release so I don’t know what I should do… Attach this label code to all of them or do nothing (I did nothing). If anyone has any tips… it’s this excellent release https://musicbrainz.org/release/61903030-1b2c-496…

      • 2015-08-10 22201, 2015

Sure, but if at some point there's another release with the same LC and only two of the labels, the third one can be removed, etc., instead of starting from scratch every time the LC is encountered.

Discogs sometimes adds it to the release. but it won't be very findable (especially since we only have the annotation)

what should be done with edits like this, https://musicbrainz.org/edit/34451128 (edit of a disc 2 as a separate release and release group). should they be voted no on or make a note and come back and merge them later on?
