hrm. "all songs written by Sly Stone and Sylvester Stewart"
      • so normally you'd use the "writer" rel since it's not specified.
      • But Sly Stone /is/ Sylvester Stewart.

do releases with different cover art variations need to be split out, or just added to the cover art section of 1 release?
      • STalKer-X
        split
      • CallerNo6
bricas, usually differnt cover art indicates a different release. or is this a weird case?
      • bricas
same release, just white/gray/black variations of art. when they're all together they spell a little phrase on the spines.
      • CallerNo6
weird case. still, I'd split them. it's the kind of thing collectors want to know.
      • STalKer-X
a different release for each of them
      • bricas
        right-o! thanks.

me wonders, who this "I" is in this style guide: https://beta.musicbrainz.org/doc/Style/Relation...
      • and on the other hand, i don't see what is so bad about clustering.
      • the guide disagrees with itself
      • first, adding siblings required "moderation work", later it assumes that a false addition of a sibling goes through unnoticed.
      • CallerNo6
'moderation' in that context simply means editing the db
      • but you're not the only one to think do-not-cluster is silly
      • STalKer-X
well... adding a release already requires 10 or more "moderation work"
      • ok, it's 5 edits per adding a release. if you don't count adding recordings.
      • CallerNo6
I think the point is that sibling clusters are bad practice in dbs, vs. relating each sibling to the parents instead.
      • STalKer-X
        most artists miss info anyway.
      • kurros
        STalKer-X: probably nikki
      • STalKer-X
if it's an official guide, it should not contain personal stuff like "I" :)
      • just as a "style guideline" from me ;p
      • kuno is that "I", at least from the article history.
      • kurros
        ah
      • kuno
STalKer-X: I edited a lot of the style pages when we moved to NGS, but I don't think I wrote any of the clustering stuff.

      • CallerNo6
        that's my understanding

        crazy :)

that do not cluster should not be an official guideline, it was created and auto approved by BrianFreud despite everyone being against the idea, why its still there in the documents i don't know but is not a rule in practice and has never been
      • hibiscuskazeneko
I remember someone (possibly reosarevok) stating something to that effect, but I abide by it out of fear
      • Why did you bring this up, perchance?

      • CallerNo6
I think it's sound in theory.
      • But I accept that it's silly in practice.
      • hibiscuskazeneko
Should I enter this as "***hole" or "Asshole"? The obi reads "asshole" (in katakana) but the disc and spine read "***hole"
      • CallerNo6
what do you usually do if the obi & cover don't agree?
      • hibiscuskazeneko
        go with the cover?
      • (normally that's for Japanese domestic artists)
      • and this is a special case
      • (with a censored title)
      • CallerNo6
well, would it make more sense to have the title in katakana (putting aside the censored bit)?
      • hibiscuskazeneko
        no
      • Those are included for readability purposes
      • CallerNo6
ah. so a japanese site would list it in en/latin?
      • hibiscuskazeneko
        some do, some don't
      • Many sites (e.g. Amazon) will list track titles in katakana so Japanese consumers can read them
      • ariscop joined the channel
      • That's the whole purpose of the transliterated obi
      • CallerNo6
So an obi isn't meant to override the cover (like, say, an import might have a barcode sticker put over the original barcode)
      • hibiscuskazeneko
        no, it's not
      • Sometimes artists will add additional subtitles in Japanese on the obi or other outer packaging (e.g. a sticker)
      • CallerNo6
based on that, 'go with the cover' sounds reasonable.
      • hibiscuskazeneko
That brings us back to the whole censorship issue
      • Wasn't there a guideline somewhere about this? (It seems fairly common.)
      • CallerNo6
        doesn't sound familiar, but maybe?
      • hibiscuskazeneko
I remember this came up a few times in the past
      • derwin
        502...
      • CallerNo6
In my mind, either you go with the cover, censorship and all, or you decide that obis override the cover.
      • But that's just one opinion
      • derwin
        man
      • CallerNo6
right. that's just one opinion, man.
      • hibiscuskazeneko
        :P
      • CallerNo6
        \0/
      • I'd say "oh, maybe it's just the cover being bleeped-out for Walmart", but the disc is censored too.
      • So it kind of seems like that's the official title.
      • I wonder, would it have been possible to transl*te it on the obi, censorship and all, and still make the meaning clear?
      • hibiscuskazeneko
Japanese people likely wouldn't know it was an expletive (or so the marketers thought, likely)
      • CallerNo6
        right, understood
      • so, is there even a way to write "***hole" in katakana, in a way that readers would understand?
      • hibiscuskazeneko
        maybe
      • usually when Japanese words are censored, they use ○ or ×
      • hibiscuskazenek1 joined the channel
      • CallerNo6
would the readers understand it as 'asshole'?
      • I've changed my mind. Just call the album 'grawlix' instead. That's my new opinon, man.
      • hibiscuskazenek1
For an English word, likely not
      • CallerNo6
yeah, that's what I was getting at. maybe the obi un-censored it because it wouldn't have really made sense any other way?

      • hibiscuskazenek1: We generally prefer the "more complete/correct" over the "more prominent/used" version of a string (e.g., taking a more complete track title from the booklet rather than the backcover). (Re: "what do you usually do if the obi & cover don't agree?")
      • hibiscuskazenek1
Right. The issue there was the censored title, and I was just using the obi as an example of where the title is uncensored.
      • Freso
        Yes.
      • So the uncensored version would be the "more complete" one, so that is the one I would go with.
      • hibiscuskazenek1
even though both the outer packaging and the disc label use the censored title
