        Hey guys
      • ruaok
        hey

do you happen to know if there's a global identifier for release_groups/release/recordings/tracks other than mbids?
      • I was using musicbrainz together with echonest, it works well for artist, but they don't provide mb's ids for tracks
      • reosarevok
        Not really
      • Musicmix
so I'm having a hard time mapping from one side (echonest) to the other (mb)
      • reosarevok
        There's ISRC for recordings
      • But those are barely public and there's no comprehensive DB for them
      • Musicmix
        :|
      • take this for example:
      • reosarevok
I mean, if there were many global IDs we wouldn't need MB that much :)
      • Musicmix
      • luks_
you could use wikipedia links if the echo nest has them
      • Musicmix
        no for tracks
      • luks_
        right, not for tracks
      • Musicmix
but it does have 7digital-US ids for example
      • or musixmatch
      • luks_
        but that's hardly a global ID :)
      • reosarevok
Musicmix: that does have "musicbrainz:track:6d53c749-ad44-495c-a653-351662c3458b" on one of them
      • Maybe it maps when it finds a direct hit
      • Musicmix
yes, sometimes it shows the mb id for tracks, but you can't use that to search
      • reosarevok
        That's really a recording MBID
      • Even though it says track
      • Musicmix
what? really? I think I checked that before
      • that would be great! let me see again
      • reosarevok
Well, I just tried to go to http://musicbrainz.org/recording/6d53c749-ad44-... and it worked
      • We do have track IDs too, but I would expect those to be all recording IDs
      • I have no idea how they do the matching, but :)
      • Musicmix
        hmn, interesting
      • I found the same in last fm API
      • tracks for them, are recordings in mb
      • ruaok joined the channel
      • reosarevok
        Yeah
      • We had tracks before we had recordings
      • So it comes from there - after that we moved to recordings (that can be shared between releases) but the IDs were kept
      • And then we added track IDs for the current track implementation because... well dunno, some people wanted them
      • So it's a bit confusing :9
      • *:)
      • Musicmix
        haha
      • I completely agree about that
      • it's weird, if these tracks are recordings..
      • there are a lot of recordings of the same song
      • oh, sure, one in each release!
      • that's why the audio_summary is shared for all of them
      • reosarevok
Yeah, some of them should probably be merged in MusicBrainz, but they aren't yet :)
      • (and some of them might be different mixes, which we don't merge)

I concede, I'm coming around to the "include all the (label-ish) things" approach.

I’m certainly coming around to the idea of not trying to connect a label and a cat no, though some sort of sane way to display/filter them would be nice

        hawke1: not connect label to catalogue : http://tickets.musicbrainz.org/browse/MBS-5602  ;)
      • “connect catalogue number to release or medium, no more to label”
      • hawke1
Yeah, I voted for that one.
      • I dunno, there is clearly some correlation/connection between labels and cat nos…
      • but at the same time there are lots of cases where a release simply has a cat no and some labels.
      • nikki
it's already possible to enter them separately if you don't know which ones belong together
      • jesus2099
i would like to always enter separate.
      • so everyone is happy…
      • nikki
except the people who don't want to lose the connection between labels and catnos...
      • jesus2099
i do enter separate usually… but all labels people want to all laabels, and only one label people want to attach it to a specific label
      • nikki
and always entering them separately wouldn't really solve any of the issues here, which is that people don't agree what should be a release label
      • jesus2099
only-one label people say this is production label, cat# belongs to this and we don’t niclude other labels… all labels people say this catalogue is issued by that big label so i set it to it and this is production label with no catalogue
      • and there are even other different peoples
      • as this is really not interesting discussion, we couldn’t set to a label would end those discussions
      • i mean i can’t go back to my collection every now and then to re-add the deleted labels…
      • and find the catalogue has moved to another one etc.
      • sorry, i’m pissed off because i bought some crap CD and crap games too, i shouldn’t have buy anything last week
      • hawke1
It does sometimes seem like we could use some way to say that a release is in the catalog of some label (based on cat no.) without actually being released under that imprint (due to no logo)
      • CallerNo6
But surely there are releases that have a label but no logo.
      • jesus2099
there is no drawback to set all that we see on release, imo. only goodness.
      • jcazevedo joined the channel
      • we could have a PRIMARY checkbox for people who only give their love to one label per release
      • nikki
you'll be adding the compact disc logo as a label then? :P

      • CallerNo6
of course this conversation would be easier if we agreed on what "label" means
      • Freso
CallerNo6: It's something you stick on something (else).
      • CallerNo6
I thought that was a signifier.
      • Or a bandaid.
      • See, I'm confused.

hey hawke1 you were the only voter on MBS-5602 and we are suddenly 5 now ? cool, man…
      • _flow_
Is there a policy regarding adding incomplete releases?
      • jesus2099
none, do your best ! ;)
      • warp
_flow_: data you enter should be correct, but there is no requirement for it be complete.
      • (ofcourse, more data is better, obviously :)
      • jesus2099
i’ve already entered just 1CD of a million CD release because 1. i only have this CD 2. it’s a very long release otherwise
      • jesus2099 turned FULLCAPS on jira
      • CallerNo6
_flow_: more generally, an edit that improves the quality and breadth of the database is a good edit, regardless of how complete it is.
      • _flow_
So this is true for http://musicbrainz.org/edit/25643459 also?
      • warp
_flow_: I'd consider that incorrect data, because it appears to users that a 1-track release exists.
      • (though ofcourse you could argue the the same for missing discs)
      • _flow_
warp: well, then every incomplete released add is 'incorrect'
      • chirlu`
_flow_: Also, how do you know it will be in a jewel case?
      • Freso
Depends on your definition of incomplete.
      • jesus2099
missing discs is OK… but incomplete disc is NG, imo… :)
      • Freso
I don't think I've seen a really complete release yet in MB.
      • _flow_
        jesus2099: what is the difference?
      • jesus2099
        it is very different
      • _flow_
And where is the harm in a incomplete release?
      • jesus2099
when you insert a CD in drive, you won’t be able to lookup
      • so the MB release is useless to identify a CD
      • _flow_
jesus2099: yes, but you won't be able to lookup if the releasee is missing entirely
      • so no harm there
      • nikki
if the tracklist is incomplete, you also can't fix it properly
      • jesus2099
yes i am able to lookup is there is mùy CD in MB
      • nikki
since you'll have to wait for the edit to add the missing tracks to be added
      • er, to be accepted
      • jesus2099
it’s what i do on some of my CD
      • nikki notes that http://tickets.musicbrainz.org/browse/MBS-3235 is relevant here
      • _flow_
nikki: you will have to wait for a release to be added too
      • IIRC
      • nikki
        no
