ruaok: Anyway, Copenhagen has "city bikes" too. I don't know if they're still 20 DKK, but regardless, they're much cheaper to borrow than any bike rental I know of.

here they are limited to short rides (<30 mins)

(Also, useful info when you rent a bike: bikes are free to bring along in the S-trains.)

hm, sounds like I should try Copenhagen by bike. Not sure yet if I should go to the summit. I don't have much time and I also don't do much MusicBrainz work currently.

In Berlin bikes cost extra in S-Bahn, but student have bikes included in there semester ticket

The student semester ticket is actually the only ticket that automatically includes taking a bike with you

As a native Copenhagenian, I swear by transport-by-bike. :) It's easily half the transport time of public transport to many places, and easily the same for cars in rush hour in most places.

time-wise it is also a good idea in Berlin, but not only you do have to pay extra, but other passengers also get angry at you when you take your bike in a crowded train during rush hours

There are sections of the S-trains dedicated to bikes and plenty of people do it. I haven't experienced anyone getting angry about me bringing my bike along (which I do several times during non-vacation weeks).

Mineo: it takes up to an hour by bike, which is doable, but not what many people want to do

well, that is like from my place to the "center". If you live close-by anyways, then you go directly by bike anyways. Like I go by bike most of the time when I stay in my district

JonnyJD_: In S-trains too - but there's an understanding that those seats are only for when no bike requires the place.

Mineo: I take the bike in the train when I go to Lyngby and Solrød to teach.

Mineo: That's ~20/30 minutes by trains respectively.

Freso: the rules in Berlin are the same. But nobody cares. It is very rare that I seen anybody getting up to make room for a bike. Often not even for baby carriages..

It would easily be 40/60+ minutes on bike, respectively.

Mineo: The bike is often used as a substitute for busses (or cars!) to/from train station and the final destination.

my mother has a separate bike she takes to the station, leaves it there for the whole day (that is why it is an extra, not an expensive one)

I also like to bring my bike when I'm visiting my grandparents, the 30-40 km to the southern most S-train station and then biking the last 20 km to their place.

anyways, bikes are used more and more in Berlin (there are even tourist tours by bike), but there is lots of room for improvements. Copenhagen, Stockholm, Uppsala (probably sweden in general) work a lot better by bike

Berlin has lots of cool things, but I am a bit jealous about biking possibilies in Copenhagen :-P
