Does anyone know how to tag WAV files for iTunes?
      • VxJasonxV
wav doesn't have a tagging standard
      • derwin
        +1
      • VxJasonxV
some people do id3, some people do apev2, others use non-file-written tags
      • derwin
for itunes, convert them to aiff?
      • VxJasonxV
        or ALAC
      • andymax
        Just adding metadata
      • metadata that iTunes can read
      • VxJasonxV
if iTunes lets you edit metadata, do that
      • if it doesn't, you can't
      • derwin
andymax: wav doesn't have metadata, generally, is what we're trying to tell you.
      • andymax
You can ...but they don't persist
      • derwin
        andymax: are you a dj?
      • Nyanko-sensei joined the channel
      • (can't think of any other reason to have wavs in itunes)
      • andymax
        programmer
      • derwin
you probably want to use beets
      • and convert your wavs to something less useless?
      • andymax
        Just like Hi-Fi ;-)
      • reosarevok
Well, I fail to see why you'd want to use almost twice the disc space for a format that can't be easily tagged :)
      • andymax
        Sound quality
      • reosarevok shrugs
      • derwin
        LOL
      • sound quality?
      • andymax
        lossless sound
      • reosarevok
The differences between WAV and FLAC, if existant, are tiny enough that who cares :)
      • andymax
If you play on a real stereo it is easy to hear the difference
      • Lotheric
FLAC is lossless, there's no difference between FLAC and WAV
      • chungy
You can get a FLAC plugin for QuickTime so iTunes can use them. Otherwise, go with ALAC for it
      • FLAC doesn't work on iPod/iPhone/iPad either if that's important
      • andymax
All devices has to work ...and tagging too
      • chungy
and yeah, FLAC/ALAC have "Lossless" in their full names for a reason. There's no quality difference
      • derwin
18:51 < andymax> If you play on a real stereo it is easy to hear the difference
      • between FLAC and WAV?
      • [citation needed]
      • Lotheric
        placebo effect
      • derwin
what mechanism would create the difference?
      • it's a byte-to-byte copy once you decode?
      • andymax
No just MP3 / WAV has a difference
      • derwin
no one is talking about mp3
      • 18:49 < derwin> and convert your wavs to something less useless?
      • I didn't mean "mp3"
      • andymax
I assumed you did, sorry, my bad
      • derwin
also, I find it very, very doubtful that you can hear a difference between 320 fraunhofer mp3 and flac
      • andymax
        So ALAC?
      • derwin
I'd love to see you prove me wrong, but given that no one on earth has been able to do that in a controlled study...
      • kepstin-laptop__ joined the channel
      • andymax
        But FLAC is not portable?
      • derwin
it depends on what you mean by "portable"
      • andymax
        Plays on all devices
      • derwin
FLAC is open, so in a meaningful way it is far more "portable" than proprietary ALAC
      • kepstin-laptop
I can put flac on my ipod running rockbox and take it with me on a plane
      • derwin
lossless which plays on all devices doesn't exist. next question?
      • kepstin-laptop
        that's "portable" :)
      • chungy
FLAC plays on pretty much anything except Apple and Microsoft devices
      • as far as lossless formats go, Apple only supports ALAC and Microsoft only supports WM-Lossless
      • besides AIFF and WAV :P
      • derwin
lol, yes, besides source formats no one would ever use
      • because devices are small
      • it's true, though, if you want to put like 10 wav albums on your 8gb iphone
      • knock yourself out
      • kepstin-laptop doesn't actually use flac on his ipod, because with flac even a 160gb drive is small :)
      • the quality will be AMAZING
      • through your earbuds
      • and shitty DAC
      • chungy
I do "oggenc" on everything I send to my (Android) phone :P
      • default settings, shitty earbuds won't make better quality settings actually beneficial
      • kepstin-laptop
... in actual use, I've switched to using 128kbit/s opus for music on the go :)
      • Lotheric
keep your lossless for archiving and encode to either mp3/ogg/m4a for your portable devices
      • kepstin-laptop
        exactly
      • andymax
        Yes
      • ...but for lossless ...WAV?
      • derwin
if you want to waste a ton of diskspace and not be able to tag it, sure, WAV
      • if you want to waste a ton of diskspace and be able to tag it, AIFF
      • kepstin-laptop
well, if you're just archiving your lossless stuff, use whatever you like, tak, ape, flac, alac, ...
      • derwin
if you want to waste less disk space and use it in iTunes/iDevices, ALAC
      • if you want to use a format that anyone actually uses to share music, FLAC
      • chungy
You can get a plugin to play FLAC directly in iTunes, it just won't help for Apple's iDevices :P
      • derwin
the above does not really seem a complex matrix, but it for sure doesn't point to WAV
      • reosarevok
Good thing about them being lossless, if you change your mind you only lose the time to reconvert them
      • kepstin-laptop
as long as you have audio in a lossless codec that ffmpeg can decode, you never need to worry about losing it :)
      • andymax
        the matrix says lo-fi mp3
      • reosarevok
mp3 v0 for portable devices, flac for storage seems perfectly workable
      • (less than v0 would probably do, for the standard portable earbuds, but :) )
      • andymax
        it's for download
      • kepstin-laptop
only reason to use mp3 nowadays is that you have really old player devices that don't do aac or vorbis, or you don't have a good aac encoder.
      • chungy
there was a brief time I experimented with using WavPack's lossy+correction format (lossless with both files), that stopped when my iPod 4g died (Which had Rockbox on it)
      • kepstin-laptop
(note that the open-source aac encoders are pretty bad, to the point where using lame is probably a better idea)
      • chungy
There's lots of current Blu-ray players and whatnot that ONLY do MP3 (if you can insert a USB stick or CD-R or similar) :/
      • reosarevok
" as "penises" every time I check FB
      • chungy
kind of annoying, but LAME has decent quality these days so meh
      • kepstin-laptop
        reosarevok: ...
      • reosarevok
Kind of a weird effect :p
      • reosarevok is sleepy. Don't ask
      • Lotheric
what? you guys do not uses realaduio ?
      • Lotheric jokes
      • chungy
i'm 12 and what is this
      • chungy ducks
      • Lotheric
        lol
      • reosarevok
I keep all my music in convenient youtube stream quality!
      • Lotheric
        ancient format
      • chungy
        [Buffering ... 60%]
      • reosarevok
(funnily enough, I'm so lazy about even downloading music lately, that's almost true...)
      • kepstin-laptop
I have a group of people I do plug.dj stuff with regularly, and the only way to get audio into there is to use a youtube video or soundcloud stream
      • reosarevok
Heh, I haven't used plug in ages
      • Maybe I should check it out again - is there anything else than Czech/Slovak dnb rooms nowadays?
      • chungy
        kepstin-laptop: ouch
      • what happened to good old shoutcast
      • derwin
what in the world is plug.dj?
      • kepstin-laptop
it saves them from having to handle the music rights/royalties issues themselves
      • reosarevok
        turntable.fm for non-US people
      • robmorrissey joined the channel
      • kepstin-laptop
turntable.fm allows you to upload tracks directly to them, but that means they are dealing with the riaa directly
      • derwin
        turntable.fm went under
      • kepstin-laptop wouldn't know :)
      • misterswag joined the channel
      • reosarevok
Yeah, they closed us non-US people ages ago
      • Nyanko-sensei joined the channel

I've used turntable once a couple years back when I was visiting the states.

      • Lotheric still can't use spotify in Canada
      • Lotheric
        >.<
      • kepstin-laptop
heh. I signed up on thespotify waiting list
      • reosarevok
You're not missing that much, and I say it as a subscriber :p
      • kepstin-laptop
but I probably won't use it anyways
      • reosarevok
Feeling slightly better by giving the artist 0.00000001€ or something instead of 0 by streaming it somewhere else
      • derwin
spotify is pretty meh. I want last.fm radio back.
      • kepstin-laptop
anyways, this google+ group has regular monthly plug.dj events, it's kind of fun: https://plus.google.com/b/113674935217411837197... :)
      • derwin
last.fm radio being gone is terrible :(
      • reosarevok
Ok, it has the entire BIS catalog and a few other decent classical labels, which is cool if you like that
      • But for popular stuff, it's not much that youtube can't offer for free
      • Freso
And for obscure/non-commercial stuff, it often doesn't have it at all.
      • reosarevok
        Pretty much
      • derwin
the worst part of that is that it will in fact have some super rare stuff
      • reosarevok
It is kinda neat for making playlists for biking and stuff, if you have good 3G coverage and not much space on your phone/whatever
      • For actual PC use, not that much
      • derwin
I just end up listening to albums that I own on CD
      • because shuffle is broken
      • kepstin-laptop
        what's broken about shuffle?
      • derwin
the set of things to shuffle is wrong
      • kepstin-laptop likes the odd juxtapositions that he gets from shuffling over ~30,000 tracks :)
      • I can't figure out a workflow that gets me something decent
      • like last.fm just played me
      • I guess I'm supposed to add a bunch of stuff to my "library" ?
      • and then shuffle that?
      • but like, that's just what last.fm allowed me to do without it being total fail, because intelligence?
