      • nikki wonders who it was who was wondering about amazon's region restricted stuff for mp3s
      • derwin
I saw one where it was region restricted
      • nikki
well, I'm pretty confident now that it's linked to the country the card you pay with is from
      • because it just told me I couldn't buy something on amazon.de because I'm (apparently) not in germany
      • which is news to me, I thought I was :P

nikki, does that count as region-restriction of the content? or do they simply not want to deal with foreign banks?
      • nikki
I'm pretty sure it's region restricted. I accidentally bought an mp3 from amazon.com once :P
      • and they're happy to take money from my card for everything else I buy

      • kepstin_ ponders the font size on http://www.megrock.com/04_dsc/dtls/lhca_5085.html
      • th1rtyf0ur
there's a difference, though, between "won't sell to X country" and "won't play in X country"
      • nikki
what does playing have to do with it?
      • my cds play everywhere, that doesn't make them worldwide releases :P
      • kepstin_: what about it?
      • th1rtyf0ur
well, like DVDs & BluRays are region-restricted in that they won't play unless they're on a player in that region. there's really no such thing for MP3s
      • nikki
oh. people actually have to worry about that? XD
      • kepstin_
nikki: for some reason, with my browser settings, the font is approximately 1mm tall.
      • making it rather hard to read :)
      • kepstin_ notes that dvd region-locking is a non-issue, since you can work around it in software when you play them on a computer with a wrong-region drive.
      • th1rtyf0ur
true, but not on a standalone (non-computer) player
      • nikki
        anyway, we don't track that
      • kepstin_
of course, doing that is technically breaking the law in certain countries :)
      • th1rtyf0ur
(console-based) video games are the same. very annoying
      • nikki
maybe one day we will, but right now those are a tiny fraction of the releases
      • th1rtyf0ur
just 'cause I live in Japan doesn't mean I want to play Final Fantasy in Japanese.. it'd take me 600 hours instead of the usual 100. XD
      • nikki
kepstin_: oh, right. well, I have a minimum font size set so I have no idea :D
      • kepstin_ notes that all of the music video dvds that have come with japanese singles that he owns have been, as far as he can tell, unencrypted and region-free.
      • haha, I played shenmue in japanese once
      • "played"
      • th1rtyf0ur
true- a lot of the "region 2" music DVDs aren't actually restricted
      • nikki
it was more like "*text rushes past* what? what!? what am I doing!? D:"
      • CallerNo6
I shouldn't have said "region restricted" maybe. I meant, not-for-sale-in-other-regions of course.
      • kepstin_
and they also tend to have uncompressed (lpcm 16bit 48khz) audio, too :)
      • th1rtyf0ur
        yeah, just nit-picking terminology :)
      • nikki
        pedant :P
      • th1rtyf0ur
        heh
      • CallerNo6
        good distinction, point taken
      • th1rtyf0ur
i still think it's ridiculous in this day & age to say "what, you live in another country? NO I WON'T TAKE YOUR MONEY FOR THIS THING U CAN'T HAVE IT"
      • nikki
it always was pretty ridiculous :P
      • th1rtyf0ur
"You have to buy this other version of the same thing that'll come out 3 months from now & be twice as expensive."
      • CallerNo6
licensing agreements and artificial scarcity for fun and profit
      • th1rtyf0ur
        exactly.
      • CallerNo6
        mostly fun, of course
      • th1rtyf0ur
        like diamonds! lol
      • nikki
        diamonds are kinda boring
      • kepstin_
... as far as I can tell, this release came with a total of 4 possible front covers, as well as a reversible tray/back/spine thing.
      • so 4 possible front covers, 2 possible back covers :/
      • nikki
four covers in the release, or a different cover depending on which you buy?
      • kepstin_
four covers in a single release
      • nikki
        ah
      • kepstin_
I guess I just put the default one as the frontiest.
      • ianmcorvidae
that's what's conventionially done for that, I think
      • for small values of convention given how rare, but :P
      • nikki
        that's what I've done
      • I mean, you can also put the booklet back in the case the wrong way, but that's not the front of the release really XD
      • kepstin_
the back/spine/tray thing on this is kind of weird tho, because it has all of legal stuff duplicated on both sides
      • nikki wonders if opera 16 will actually open on here
      • just switches out the main picture, otherwise both sides are the same
      • kepstin_ gets to work cleaning up the scans and uploading them :
      • nikki
        the caa is down though
      • and no, still doesn't run. stupid piece of shit

      • CallerNo7: yes, do, I'll work from home and join you
      • CallerNo7
        Cool, might happen in mid-August.
      • I want to tape a "kick me" sign on the back of the CAA server
      • nikki
it's not really the caa server :P
      • (not even sure that there is such a thing)
      • CallerNo7

      • kepstin_ still has about 3 images to go, so he doesn't have *all* his hopes up quite yet :)
      • kepstin_
ooh, multi-select works in the new uploader
      • kepstin_ hits the go button on 20 images
      • drsaunde
        multi select?
      • new uploader?
      • nikki
        ehehe
      • drsaunde: try uploading covers on beta instead, if you're curious
      • drsaunde
        okay thanks
      • nikki
although there's a bunch of things waiting to be merged into beta, so it's not quite as cool as it's supposed to be :P
      • kepstin_ does his part to make the blue line on the https://archive.org/stats/s3.php graph go higher.
      • kepstin_
admittedly, at my upload speed, i don't see how much higher I can make a graph measured in hits per second go :)

http://people.xiph.org/~xiphmont/demo/opus/demo... is kind of funny in places; I love how they added a neural network to the opus encoder.
      • (the neural network handles deciding whether something sounds like speech or music, to decide which mode to run the encoder in)
      • ianmcorvidae
I suppose if it does the job best...
