and I only know of the W. because that's needed to distinguish him from his father

Anyway, I guess the point I was getting at (with Tchaikovsky): Is the reason that Estonian excludes the middle name, because Estonians only have first/last? or just because no one bothered to add the middle name?

hawke_1: from my experience, Americans using Name1 Initial Name2 is reasonably common (not a majority thing maybe but still common) while elsewhere it's nonexistant, except in Russia where it's the same in a different way

also, second names are never in wikipedia introduction, and middle names are :)

mknjc_: you don't need to *exactly* recreate them by hand, in that just going there and selecting "add new recordings" for each one will do that itself
hawke_1: from what I've seen, ethnic Russian names in Estonian never use patronymics

I mean, my full name is “Alex Leonard Mauer”, even though the middle name only appears on my birth certificate, and the middle initial only on credit cards and such.

I don’t *use* that name, but it’s still there.

And it would still be there even if I moved to spain or estonia or iceland. :-)
hawke_1: hmm, some countries have (or at least used to have) interesting laws regarding foreign names :)

Also notice all of those aliases which are marked as somthing aren't marked as "legal name" :p

eg. until recently, in order to become a japanese citizen, you'd have to choose a native japanese name...

If someone asked me to fill something out and it only listed first/last name (or given/family name) I would only do the first and the last…not because it’s specifically excluded.

huh, an American passport sample doesn't seem to have a full name field either

U.S. and Canada passport applications explicitly request that you fill out first, middle, and surnames iirc.

hmm. the canadian application apparently is requesting "Surname (last name)", "Given name(s)", "Surname (last name) at birth", "Former surname (former last name)", and "Mother's maiden name"

A Russian one seems to use the same as the American one too, Surname / Given names (which I expect is anyway an international convention) in both Cyrillic in Latin with "Given names" seemingly always including the patronymic in Cyrillic but only sometimes (maybe for old ones?) in Latin

Which makes sense, since I think Tchaikovsky and, to some level, Lenin are the only two Russians for which I've often seen the patronymic being used when using their names in Latin script

I've pretty much never seen it used for, say, Stravinsky or Prokofiev in Latin

kepstin-work found the signup form on https://www.minc.gr.jp/ to be quite amusing, in how it asks for your family/given name 3 times, once each in kanji, kana, and latin transliteration.

you should go and find out when that alias was first used to refer to the person, and set that as the start date :)

well, did we stop using that name after the person died? no? then remove the end date ;)
