is it bad practise to come here and beg for votes? :P
Leftmost
In general, it's probably best only to ask for votes if you need them to continue editing.
ackthet
can i merge a 3rd CD while waiting for the 2nd CD to merge?
next time i'll do it the other way around <_<
Leftmost
You can merge multiple releases at one time. I think it will fail if you try two separate merges, though.
ackthet
ok
so i cant add the 3rd one till it goes though
do most things get reviewed? or if its something obscure will it take forever
culinko
you can cancel your merge
add all discs
and then merge all of them in one edit
ackthet
yeah
reosarevok
Yeah, that's generally the easiest way
(merging all CDs in one go)
Some edits never get reviewed (and end up passing after the 7 days pending time)
Merges I try to check
culinko
btw there is just a tiny difference in the release/RG title (e/i), not sure if that's intentional
reosarevok
Anyway, for cases where it's needed for tagging, just asking for the votes here can make sense
Just not for every edit :)
flamingspinach
wouldn't it be easier to hack picard to grab open edits and apply them locally?
reosarevok
flamingspinach: no, especially since ackthet said they prefer beets :p
flamingspinach
haha
but for picard users
surely that should be possible, no?
reosarevok
But anyway, I'm unconvinced by a "use open edits" feature. I'm still worried it will lead to people making changes that go against the guidelines because they want to use them for tagging, and letting them for people to downvote
Maybe I'm just paranoid :)
flamingspinach
hmm, that might happen
nikki
mb itself doesn't even know what the final outcome will look like, so I can't see how picard would :P
(that's why edits sit around open until they fail when modbot tries to apply them)
culinko
i don't miss it because i usually edit stuff that i don't have in collection just because i see a tiny mistake. hello VA releases :/
flamingspinach
nikki: picard could give a best-effort approximation
in most cases that would work fine
also since it's doing everything locally it can actually try to apply the edits and figure out what's going on
nikki
and I don't think there's any way we'll ever do anything like that with the current edit system. we have enough queries that time out without adding a load more
ackthet
i wish i could give the add new disc a discID
flamingspinach
unlike the server where doing that on the whole db every time someone made a single edit would be impossible
nikki does that mean I should disable my userscripts which fetch the number of open edits on every entity page on mbz :P
nikki
the webservice is responsible for the vast vast majority of hits we get, and if people can get that information, they're going to request it for everything by default
reosarevok
ackthet: yeah, being able to add a disc with a discID to an existing release is something we really should allow
I'm unsure why it hasn't been worked on
Or maybe it has and it proved to be quite hard? I don't know
nikki, do you know?
nikki
because it involves the release editor
reosarevok
heh, well, yeah, but we have made much more pointless changes to the RE recently
*cough* trackids *cough*
culinko
hah, the all mighty release editor without bugs
reosarevok
Yet we can't add the one thing that actually is useful for everyone :/
nikki
yeah and look at how much broke in the process
reosarevok
Yeah, I know :p
I'm just sad that if we were to implement one thing, it was that and not this
Well, hopefully bitmap's work will make it a bit simpler
ackthet
ahhh the things i do instead of working on actual research
culinko
mb is like a black hole
it will suck you in :P
ackthet
i must have propert tags!
culinko
i really hope http://tickets.musicbrainz.org/browse/MBS-5130 will be worked on at some point in the future. because of the checkbox "copy all changes", many potentially wrong edits are being entered very often.
reosarevok
I really hope if it's changed, there's a second option for the current behaviour
culinko
i was thinking about the possibilities
reosarevok
Because more often than not it's what I want when I enter such an edit, even if I changed nothing more than one letter
culinko
the best option i found was to display like 10 checkmarks :P
reosarevok
(stuff like some editor fixing a tracklist but forgetting / not knowing how to do the recordings)
culinko
yeah, i do that too
but i also see people changing multiple recording names/artists/durations just because they changed 1 typo
i was thinking about checkmarks: all track info->recordings, track titles->recordings, track artists->recordings, track durations->recordings, my tracklist changes-> recordings, my track title changes->recordings, my track artist changes->recordings, my track duration changes->recordings
but that's too many:P
hawke joined the channel
ackthet
has there ever been talk of a musicbrainz for movies?
moviebrainz
reosarevok
yes
But we have few resources as is
hawke_1 joined the channel
ackthet
:(
JonnyJD_ joined the channel
reosarevok
So, the only clear way I can see us doing it is either someone coming and saying "I'll pay for the development" or someone coming and saying "I want to do this for free, it sounds fun"
(and the only one I can see getting finished is the former)
ackthet
reosarevok: so im on the discid tab... how do i add?
reosarevok
There was a plan to do a bookbrainz, but it stalled because we just didn't have the time
ackthet
mmm that would also be nice
reosarevok
Oh, heh. There should be a link there to a page that explains how to add them, but with Picard
I have no idea if beets has an option for it...
ackthet
i have the discid
i cant just add it? :(
reosarevok
What do you mean you have it? :)
ackthet
like, when i got to rip a CD in prints hte discID out
(I didn't know we had mm. - what is that anyway? :/ ianmcorvidae?)
ianmcorvidae
it's just an alias for the main site
reosarevok
oh
ok
ianmcorvidae
as ruaok put it when someone else was asking about it the other day
it was old-style future-proofing
as I put it, that the future ended up making obsolete :)
the notion was it should be possible to put that stuff on a different server if that ended up useful
but then things like nginx came along that make that easy to do anyway, so :P
reosarevok
I guess we can't remove it though, given how that program at least uses it
Well, whatever
ianmcorvidae
yeah, but it doesn't really matter
it's a line in a DNS config somewhere and that's basically it :P
reosarevok
Anyway, I'm off to play some Crusader Kings and sleep, but I'm sure other people here can help further if needed :)
ackthet
i think that url is generated by the linux library
ianmcorvidae
yes, libdiscid generates it
reosarevok
Night! :)
ianmcorvidae
later reo
ackthet
reosarevok: thanks for the help!
aww damn
JonnyJD_
what program uses the submission_url in a non-transparent way?
ackthet
JonnyJD_: are you asking what that program was?
its morituri (a high security CD ripper)
JonnyJD_
ackthet: looks like morituri is what you used
ackthet
yeah
JonnyJD_
hm, okay. submission_url is used transparently
I was thinking about skipping the whole redirection and return the real/current URL with libdiscid, but I am not sure if anything depends on this url having a certain form
