It makes no sense to have two levels that cover exactly the same area

Where are people born, or where are places? In the district or the city?
2013-08-26 23823, 2013
reosarevok
It's the same :)

What is true is that we should probably have multiple types per area :/

yes, but you will keep wikidata structure
2013-08-26 23815, 2013
reosarevok
The wikidata structure is useful most of the time, but if it means complications in MusicBrainz, we should probably care about our users more :)
2013-08-26 23803, 2013
culinko
i don't see any complications

Nobody is going to go "but I wanted to link this artist to the district!" (I hope)
2013-08-26 23826, 2013
reosarevok
The complication is that wikidata isn't even consistent
2013-08-26 23843, 2013
reosarevok
It most often has only one page for several entities that cover the same area

reosarevok
If they always kept two pages when something like that happens, I might see a point - although it still is confusing for anyone who just wants to list someone as born in Brno
2013-08-26 23846, 2013
reosarevok
But for example where there are several levels in the UK or Spain, you never get two pages
I'm kinda surprised they do have it for Brno actually :)
2013-08-26 23806, 2013
culinko
well i see the consistency. it's the same as in Slovakia. kraje (regions), okresy (districts), mestá (towns/cities)
2013-08-26 23816, 2013
culinko
only exceptions is their capital though

i don't see why there wouldn't be new entry for the city instead of linking both to the district

Because we're not a geopolitical database - we care about areas as long as they are useful for music info. And for that, having more than one area covering exactly the same space isn't helpful.

If we were trying to display the changes in the political structure of central Europe during time, that would be very useful - but for saying where someone died or was born or where a label or venue is, it provides no useful choice.

Hi, got a quick question... I've resaved some early Stereo MC's albums with Picard, and noticed the apostrophe has been removed from the artist name.

At mb.org it shows the apostrophe in the Artist column for these albums
Anyone any idea why mb.org lists the albums as "Stereo MCs", but when I save with Picard it uses "Stereo MCs"?

reosarevok: well, you're right about the geopolitical database. i just think having district as a city is a weird thing, not sure if there will be any improvements on areas in the future, i mean having other relationships than just "has parts" etc.

(which *is* one reason that might make it sensible to separate things if they have different anthems, heh :) )

grtp: do you have something selected in the options similar to "use standarsised names" or something?
