I despaired so much that I just copied it exactly and never looked at it again
      • flamingspinach
        that I don't mind
      • (I assume you mean original Japanese releases)
      • th1rtyf0ur
someone had ' 鶺鴒~seki-ray~' transliterated as 'Rankai ~seki ray~'. o_O; RLY? IT'S RIGHT THERE ALREADY! lol
      • flamingspinach
Japanese speakers can romanize their language however the heck they want
      • th1rtyf0ur: rofl
      • nikki
        well, an overseas release
      • flamingspinach
one of Neo_Player's romanizations was Bishou Mu (for 微笑む)
      • I facepalmed
      • th1rtyf0ur
nikki: that's just bad spelling :)
      • nikki
and it was full of errors, like missing letters and stuff
      • th1rtyf0ur
        ha
      • nikki
so not just a romanisation variant I don't like, but actually wrong :P
      • flamingspinach
oh well if it's an overseas release, that's stupid, but what can you do
      • it's "official"
      • th1rtyf0ur
if I had ¥100 for every time I saw SARAD BAR, or LANCH MENU, or CACKTAILS...
      • nikki
well normally we would correct typos on official releases
      • flamingspinach
        CACKTAILS lol
      • nikki
but figuring where to stop was impossible :P
      • flamingspinach
nikki: well, it's not really a typo, if it's supposed to be a transliteration
      • th1rtyf0ur
actually saw 'rum & coke' listed as 'ram & cock' once. roflmao
      • or maybe it was 'ram & cook'
      • nikki
I think leaving the last character of the word out counts as a typo :P
      • th1rtyf0ur
so, what % of MB regulars read Japanese/work on JP releases? seems unusually high XD
      • nikki
I don't know about the percentage, but we do have an abnormally high interest in japanese music
      • flamingspinach
japan is a musical country, what can I say
      • ... though we mostly focus on, like, merchandise-mill anime music
      • ianmcorvidae
japan is also nearly as OCD as we are about cataloguing their data
      • nikki
especially considering how many native speakers we have... the ratio is completely different from most other countries
      • ianmcorvidae
MB and japan... we *understand* each other :P
      • flamingspinach
then why do we only have like 2-3 japanese editors lol
      • ianmcorvidae
        and heh, yeah
      • nikki
      • flamingspinach
nikki what's going on with the localization?
      • nikki
        not a lot?
      • flamingspinach
        :(
      • nikki
it's on transifex, if anyone wants to translate it, they're welcome to join there :P
      • th1rtyf0ur
        ha, nice
      • 2 klingon releases, ha
      • flamingspinach
nikki: really? I figured people only want native speakers
      • nikki
I'm not sure what we want :/
      • ianmcorvidae
I mean, a fairly fluent non-native translation is a lot better than english
      • th1rtyf0ur
re the OCD, I have noticed a tendency for Japanese people to have 1 main hobby/interest that they pour all their effort into, instead of being dabblers in a lot of things
      • MOAR DESU
      • nikki
yeah, given how few natives we have and how few we're likely to continue to have while we don't have a japanese version, it could well be better :P
      • ianmcorvidae
but we (and by "we" I probably mean "I") should probably work on getting translations on the main server so they can actually be beneficial to a broad audience :P
      • nikki
I mean, even natives make mistakes :P
      • flamingspinach
        I might help sometime then
      • th1rtyf0ur
maybe I could try not-so-subtly pimping MB on mixi :D
      • nikki
someone was translating there and misunderstood "edit note" as actually editing a note, not a note attached to an edit
      • flamingspinach
      • "approximate translation" my ass
      • th1rtyf0ur
approx translation = enable rikaichan & translate each word individually, then smack 'em together :D
      • flamingspinach
        dude
      • even in rikaichan you can hit shift to look at enamdict
      • th1rtyf0ur
        heh
      • only in ff. for some reason it doesn't work in chrome
      • dictionary isn't migrated or something. at least not on my home computer
      • flamingspinach
well, don't use chrome then ;)
      • th1rtyf0ur

        nikki: joined ja trans team
      • i assume the forms are disabled until I'm approved?
      • nikki
        yeah
      • but I just approved it :P
      • th1rtyf0ur
        k thx :)
      • Leftmost
Now download your ja knowledge to my brain!
      • th1rtyf0ur
is there a quick way to see where the keywords are used in context on mb?
      • like, 'Subdivision' could refer to several things
      • ianmcorvidae
not really, though that's presumably an area type
      • there's often details with contexts, and you can look at the filenames to get a hint (things starting with root/ will generally roughly follow the URL scheme)
      • th1rtyf0ur
could also refer to label branches, though, which would probably use a different word
      • flamingspinach
look up some of the things marked as that, on wikipedia
      • then see the corresponding article on japanese wiki
      • nikki
can also just ask in here or something
      • th1rtyf0ur
        ok- attributes/Subdivision - area or company/branch?
      • last word left :)
      • nikki
        area
      • th1rtyf0ur
        k
      • ianmcorvidae
look in the "more details" section next time, also
      • you'll see in there Occurrences: DB:area_type/name:2 as well as Context: area_type
      • th1rtyf0ur
        ah cool
      • ianmcorvidae
which I think would presumably have made it clear it's talking about an area type XD
      • flamingspinach np: MOSAIC.WAV - ねるがよい
      • th1rtyf0ur
        hadn't noticed that yet
      • thanks
      • ianmcorvidae
yeah, especially in attributes you'll probably need it
      • there's something like 8 different 'Other' strings
      • for example XD
      • th1rtyf0ur
there weren't many left in that section

For those of you who speak Japanese as a learned language, how do you practice kanji knowledge?
      • th1rtyf0ur
used to read manga, but haven't in a while
      • flamingspinach
Leftmost: don't practice kanji, practice vocabulary
      • th1rtyf0ur
that & tweeting in japanese, & reading japanese tweets
      • flamingspinach
to do otherwise is to put the cart before the horse
      • th1rtyf0ur
        true
      • Leftmost
flamingspinach, of course. I need to practice both, really, but my kanji reading/writing is in even worse shape than my vocabulary, which isn't doing so hot anyhow.
      • flamingspinach
Leftmost: also, join ##japanese and practice there ;)
      • Leftmost
And I don't have a good way to do either.

my girlfriend generally just does it by way of reading, etc.
      • flamingspinach
personally I don't care about handwriting and IMHO you shouldn't either (unless calligraphy is a hobby of yours)
      • ianmcorvidae
of course it helps that she's a big fan of one of the idol groups and there's a wide variety of blogs and things to read on the topic. but :P
      • flamingspinach
learning to read kanji is waaaay easier than learning to write them
      • lol idols
      • ianmcorvidae
        and yeah, certainly
      • th1rtyf0ur
        oh gawd XD
      • Leftmost
I'm not trying to write perfectly, and I can generally tell how to write a character if I can read it. It was a secondary concern, though.
      • Some sort of framework for improving vocabulary and kanji reading would be incredibly helpful, though.
      • flamingspinach
I've been listening to an idol song on repeat since yesterday, it's so good
      • oh wait, did I sai an idol song? I meant a hilarious complete reimagining of an idol song by a wizard bassist http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VdaLG1eHy14
      • *say
      • I wish idol music was actually like this
      • Leftmost
As long as it isn't Heisig, which I found completely useless for me.
      • flamingspinach
        lol heisig
      • mnemonics are stupid imo
      • especially the embarrassingly bad made up ones heisig has
      • ianmcorvidae
presumably the way to do it is just standard memorization tools
      • Leftmost
When I took Japanese at university here, one of my professors loved Heisig. It made me angry.
      • ianmcorvidae
make yourself some anki decks and get cracking :P
      • flamingspinach
honestly I got too lazy to really stick with anki
      • ianmcorvidae
not that I'm good at following that advice, but
      • flamingspinach
but I get along mostly ok
      • spend more time reading and less on organizing your anki deck, and you just might come out better off
      • nikki
        haha
      • Leftmost
I don't have the foggiest how to find reading materials appropriate for me.
      • th1rtyf0ur
        Ranma has furigana XD
      • just look up every word you're not familiar with, & over time, you won't have to as often
      • flamingspinach
Leftmost: IRC is handy that way
      • ianmcorvidae
yeah, I mean, act like a japanese kid with roughly comparable skills
      • flamingspinach
because you can ask people to explain in real time
      • ianmcorvidae
also ranma seems like a good recommendation :P
      • flamingspinach
        seriously, hie thee t' ##japanese
      • ianmcorvidae looks with some amusement at the list of (mostly completely untranslated) languages on the i18n sandbox
      • th1rtyf0ur
heh. or any manga with a young-ish target age, which usually have furigana
      • anyway, i'm off for today. l8er all
      • flamingspinach
        see ya
      • simukis_
I can bet you'll be able to find most of the popular manga both scanlated and not in any anime-related tracker…
