        i’m a genius
      • snartal
Luks: Seems to go against the MB "Everything out in the open". At least for the the linking part. We should know who put a fingerprint on a recording.
      • CatQuest
        nah, why?
      • luks
snartal: well, acoustid is not MB, so that's not a problem :)
      • CatQuest
ithe linking *this and that* to the thing on *mb* maybe, but not the submit to acustid
      • luks
many people helped build acoustid, but they just do not want to be linked to their submissions
      • I think that's an acceptable price for having the fingerprints they submitted
      • CatQuest doesn't care. but considering the norway is being stupid lately
      • CatQuest
        maybe i do
      • jesus2099
        norway stupid ?
      • oh i get it, why some peopel don’t want…
      • on the contrary i really dream an app like PIcard which could submit all dat info (TOC, ISRC, fingerprints) without having to temp. rip my CD…  :/
      • but plese not called picard !
      •  :)
      • CatQuest
        jesus2099: yea
      • lol picard
      • jesus2099
      • CatQuest
yea yea yea I know, it's some fiush thing
      • i assume that if they called it "findus" I'd feel the way you do
      • jesus2099
        haha exactly !
      • kepstin-work notes that having an application that could submit all that data would effectively have to be a cd ripper that just deleted the files after it was done
      • i would prefer something more cool… like probably something more … UPPERKASE
      • kepstin-work
well, it could be a bit faster, since it only has to rip the first 2 minutes of each song for fingerprinting. but still.
      • CatQuest
i remember all the way ago with TRM's. inhouseuk had some thing that could get TRMs fro mcd
      • jesus2099
        wow!
      • CatQuest
but I digress, ia have managed tocure some of my cold so I will work on the kitchen some more
      • AVE 2022!
      • jesus2099
        good luck
      •  ?
      • CatQuest
yea. the kichen is a scary place
      • blup
      • jesus2099
        AVE 2022 ?
      • maybe MB-CDNFOKOMANDOR sounds cool
      • snartal
luks: Anyway to my real questions.... it says 5 sources for a particular id... Why would there be 5 sources?
      • kepstin-work
hmm. given the design of the fingerprint algorithm, you could probably get away with using a faster less accurate cd ripping mechanism, and still get decent fingerprints.
      • jesus2099
could be 5 times the same people with a different pathed CD rip
      • i never remember what i already did so i usually do this several times for instance
      • this→things
      • luks
snartal: it was submitted 5 times, without having the history public you can't really know it's if 5 people or 1 person with 5 identical submissions
      • snartal
So, I can do a submit without doing a check for a match first?
      • luks
        yes
      • jesus2099
luks: if you implement (yeah) something like public/private settings, will you show everything, just the names of private people will be mosaic
      •  ?
      • luks
jesus2099: yes, most likely it will be like that
      • snartal
ok, and regarding the Linked MB part, the one that says sources=5 shows sources=1... why would those # be different?
      • jesus2099
or you add them sun glasses or something neat like that
      • snartal
      • luks
snartal: fingerprints can be submitted without MBIDs
      • so e.g. 4 users submitted just the fingerprint, one user submitted fingerprint+MBID
      • jesus2099
hey it would be so cool to have a gravater option &sunglasses=1 that would auto-add sunglaasses
      • kepstin-work: thanks for your thoughts, i’ve just read them (they were lost in many lines, didn’t see them)
      • it’s my dream app CD2MB ← this name is better
      • just a submitter, not a tagger
      • luks wishes CDs would finally "die" :/
      • kepstin-work
but yes, a cd fingerprinting application is simply a cd ripper that rips the first 2 minutes of each track using a fast/insecure method, fingerprints them (with appropriate settings to pass the file real length along), and then deletes the temp files :/
      • jesus2099
kepstin-work: with submitting TOC and ISRC too
      • luks: oh no, i love them too much
      • jesus2099 love love <3 big kiss CD
      • kepstin-work has gone to reading books on an epaper ebook reader and hasn't looked back; but online music sales are really lagging behind the ebook market :(
      • jesus2099 love BSCD! :D
      • kepstin-work: really you read ebooks ?
      • kepstin-work
        yep.
      • luks
I'm slightly annoyed that most of the popular artist only sell on amazon and itunes, which only sells in a few countries
      • jesus2099
        i read pbooks :D
      • kuno
kepstin-work: hm, I thought it would be the other way around.
      • luks
so I just tend to pirate those
      • but many bands are discovering bandcamp or have custom eshops
      • kepstin-work
aside from a couple special collectors editions where I got physical hardcopies, I pretty much only buy ebooks now.
      • jesus2099
luks: but you can buy the cd insead, it’s even better :)
      • luks
I haven't use a CD in many many years
      • not sure if I'd have a working CD drive to rip it
      • jesus2099
        you’re a retro-vinyl-guy ?
      • kepstin-work
the digital market in japan has been *really* slow to take off.
      • jesus2099
        cool↗
      • kepstin-work
which is kind of strange, really.
      • jesus2099
        no, it’s good thing
      • they pirate less, that’s all
      • kepstin-work notes that several larger japanese artists are finally starting to move onto itunes, and a few have even made their stuff "worldwide" available
      • luks
I'm not sure if moving to itunes is a progress
      • kuno notes that some japanese stuff on itunes still has DRM, and iTunes doesn't tell you about that beforehand.
      • kepstin-work
well, it was itunes that proved that digital media sales could be a thing for the us market, pretty much.
      • jesus2099 hate hate hate when some release is digital exclusive !
      • so I see it as a stepping stone.
      • HankCorto joined the channel
      • kepstin-work particularly hates it when some release is a digital exclusive only available for purchase with a cell phone in japan ;)
      • kuno
        kepstin-work: hah, yikes
      • jesus2099
uh oh that’s even worse yeah… mine is japanese but sold easy digitally but i boycot it… actually if i bought it i would loose it
      • nikki
luks: I tried to buy an mp3 from amazon.de the other day, only for it to tell me it won't sell me it because I'm not in germany
      • kepstin-work
nikki: forget to turn your proxy off? :)
      • nikki
kepstin-work: nope, I have a british credit card
      • jesus2099
        they work with shpiiing adress
      • kepstin-work
        ah :/
      • nikki
and/or my street declared independence without me knowing
      • luks
what's even worse than amazon not selling me music is the label's website having these kind of stupid restrictions
      • jesus2099
i can order CD from any amazon
      • luks
couldn't find any way to buy the latest frontline assembly album
      • jesus2099
at least i only tried UK and JP
      • luks
jesus2099: I do not want to wait 2 weeks before I listen to it
      • nikki
amazon has this autorip these days in some of the sites
      • jesus2099
i’m not so rush to sacrifice on format
      • kepstin-work may have been at least partially responsible for http://paintwithstars.bandcamp.com/ having been released on bandcamp.
      • nikki
I haven't tried it, but it seems kinda cool
      • jesus2099
i tried it out of curiosity
      • reosarevok
kepstin-work: does that make you a label? :D
      • jesus2099
i received an email saying i had this handful of digirtal albums suddenly
      • (because i bouht those CD sometimes)
      • kepstin-work
reosarevok: nah, I just suggested the site on facebook when she mentioned she was thinking of releasing an album :)
      • jesus2099
kepstin-work: there are so many stuff called ameagari !
      • kepstin-work
        jesus2099: I know, right! :)
      • reosarevok
kepstin-work: heh, I was like god 100? but it seems those 100 are like 1€ :p
      • Currencies, stop being confusing!
      • portik joined the channel
      • kepstin-work
she included little thank-you notes with the first bunch of albums sold: https://twitter.com/kepstin/status/230269889154... :)
      • nikki
jesus2099: I've bought cds from .uk, .fr, .de, .com and .jp while in a different country so I assume it's the same for them all. I'd try .cn too, but there's quite a bit of a language barrier there :P
      • jesus2099
there is no barrier for CD… there is barrier for games (got to use other webstites then)
      • nikki: ↗ indeed
      • nikki
the mp3 stuff is terrible though
      • jesus2099
        yes, sounds terrible
      • nikki
so far my three experiences with it have been 1) buying mp3s for kuno because they wouldn't sell to him, accidentally buying something I didn't want from .com while trying to see if it would let me and not being allowed to buy something I do want because I'm in the right country :P
      • nikki adds 2) and 3) in there somewhere
      • jesus2099
        haha
      • almost my only experience with mp3 is temp folder
      • nikki
the alternatives were pay more for an m4a from itunes or not buy it at all, so I went with the latter
      • kepstin-work has a limited, small number of files which he either purchased as aac/mp3 or... found as aac/mp3.
      • jesus2099
        (applause) good choice
      • kepstin-work
the rest of my mp3s are simply lossy copies of stuff I have as lossless, and I'm steadily moving those to newer formats.
      • (mostly to save space on my ipod)
      • jesus2099
i rarely buy software (digital music, programs, etc.) i prefer have it for real… i only bought impulse tracker 2 and EmEditor iirc
      • nikki
heh, I use oggs for my portable player
      • luks
not sure if having something on a CD makes it real
      • something digital
      • jesus2099
luks: it’s real if it’s on CD
      • luks
but it's a real CD, not a real program :)
      • jesus2099
for my portable player (well they all have been stolen recently but) i use mono mp3 because i’m deaf one ear :)
      • kepstin-work
hmm. we allow people to submit edits on musicbrainz without confirming an email address?
      • reosarevok
Heh, yeah, I mean, at least for games, lately even if you have bought it on CD the companies can just block you from using them
      • kepstin-work
that makes no sense.. they can't receive edit note emails
      • nikki
kepstin-work: we shouldn't, but it's notorious for breaking
      • reosarevok
(I guess if you have it on CD you can at least try to hack around it though)
      • They can *remove* their email
      • nikki
        kepstin-work: I unset that earlier
      • reosarevok
        Oh
      • kepstin-work
and we are having issues getting that user to respond to edit notes :/
      • nikki
        that's exactly why I did :P
      • kepstin-work
ah. so you unset their email as a way to stop them from making further edits?
      • jesus2099
        reosarevok: bloecked physical games ?
      • nikki
        yes
