ianmcorvidae: what does "matched by index" mean?
      • 2013-01-07 00707, 2013

      • ianmcorvidae
derwin: it means that bit was already matched in the data I got from the archive
      • 2013-01-07 00723, 2013

      • ianmcorvidae
derwin: which in the case of this index means that it was matched based on acoustids
      • 2013-01-07 00749, 2013

      • derwin
so it's matching the *recording* that way, but it seems to get the *release* too ?
      • 2013-01-07 00703, 2013

      • ianmcorvidae
        sometimes, yes
      • 2013-01-07 00732, 2013

      • ianmcorvidae
if it finds that all the files on a release are matched to a set of recordings that correspond to a full release, it pretty much matches that
      • 2013-01-07 00750, 2013

      • derwin
        there's an api for set-of-acoustids ?
      • 2013-01-07 00721, 2013

      • ianmcorvidae
well, you can look up each acoustid and get a recording, and you can look up each recording and see what releases it's on
      • 2013-01-07 00748, 2013

      • ianmcorvidae
(well, you can look up each acoustid and get several recordings -- but there's documented cases where the archive didn't choose the "right" recording)
      • 2013-01-07 00737, 2013

      • ianmcorvidae
but you may have seen luks link some graphs, the archive has essentially been load-testing acoustid for him :)
      • 2013-01-07 00700, 2013

      • ianmcorvidae
(it's done quite well, in fact, but)
      • 2013-01-07 00740, 2013

      • ianmcorvidae
I don't know all the details of the archive's matching process though; they sometimes also match several releases in a given release group

lately I've found myself adding a lot of releases that are already on vgmdb for example

I just tagged a star wars soundtrack and I see all those (medley), is this a style guideline or something ? I'm not that familiar editing soundtracks. The booklet does not say (medley). I found a proposed guideline on the wiki... So what's the deal ? :)

my personal opinion: if the booklet doesn't say "(Medley)" then it shouldn't be in the track title
      • 2013-01-07 00740, 2013

      • ianweller
that looks like a fairly old style guideline, probably dead now
      • 2013-01-07 00744, 2013

      • Lotheric
        That's my feeling too
      • 2013-01-07 00704, 2013

I used Picard and then had to remove all those (medleys) from my tags, annoying :)
      • 2013-01-07 00725, 2013

      • ianweller
go through and get rid of "(medley)" and see if somebody gets mad :)
      • 2013-01-07 00727, 2013

      • Lotheric
The / makes it evident anyways

        yep
      • 2013-01-07 00750, 2013

      • ianweller
now, if the booklet said "Tales of a Jedi Knight/Learn About the Force Medley" then i'd say parenthetical it but

imho now that we have works and artist credits we don't really need style-based normalization of tracklists anymore
      • 2013-01-07 00744, 2013

      • ianweller
flamingspinach: well, we do (capitalization, most importantly)
      • 2013-01-07 00710, 2013

      • ianweller
classical track listings should be normalized in the database, etc
      • 2013-01-07 00759, 2013

      • nikki
flamingspinach: we tried it, it didn't work. recordings are already too separate from the release to work
      • 2013-01-07 00728, 2013

      • flamingspinach
        nikki: tried what?
      • 2013-01-07 00743, 2013

      • flamingspinach
        ianweller: why?
      • 2013-01-07 00754, 2013

      • nikki
not having so much style-based normalisation for tracklists
      • 2013-01-07 00738, 2013

      • flamingspinach
I don't understand why recordings being too separate from the release would cause not having so much style-based normalization for tracklists not to work
      • 2013-01-07 00709, 2013

      • nikki
because then there's nothing people can use for tagging if they want correct capitalisation or whatever
      • 2013-01-07 00743, 2013

      • flamingspinach
but if you do have style-based normalization for tracklists then there's nothing people can use for tagging if they want an exact match with the release's tracklist / booklet / whatever
      • 2013-01-07 00757, 2013

      • nikki
and given that most people in mb came to mb because they want their files to be nicely tagged, a lot of people got upset about it
      • 2013-01-07 00713, 2013

      • nikki
        we've never had that
      • 2013-01-07 00721, 2013

      • flamingspinach
        true, we haven't
      • 2013-01-07 00724, 2013

      • 2013-01-07 00725, 2013

      • nikki
on the other hand, we've been normalising tracklists for a decade
      • 2013-01-07 00751, 2013

      • nikki
so unless we add another layer of track/artist names, it doesn't work
      • 2013-01-07 00758, 2013

      • nikki already gets annoyed by the ripper she's been using lately using recording info rather than track info
      • 2013-01-07 00723, 2013

      • ianweller doesn't trust anything but picard to handle tags
      • 2013-01-07 00735, 2013

      • flamingspinach
we could start denormalizing old tracklists, if we decided to go that way
      • 2013-01-07 00736, 2013

      • ianweller
        to write them, at least
      • 2013-01-07 00705, 2013

      • flamingspinach
at least for me, the only reason I cared about normalized tracklists before NGS was because otherwise I had no way to identify two different recordings of the same work which had different names in the tracklists of different releases
      • 2013-01-07 00729, 2013

      • ianweller
i care about tracklist normalization for a lot more reason than that
      • 2013-01-07 00744, 2013

      • flamingspinach
        fair enough I guess

hi all. using picard from git. logs full of errors relating to HOST ec1.images-amazon.com and http://s3.us.archive.org:80/<snip>/index.js…. is something broken server-side or do i have a problem with my setup?

I have a song that has few but significative lyrics change. There is a first version, then on concerts, the singer changes a few words like the generalised usage of 俺(おれ) instead of one 僕(ぼく) which seemed like maybe anomaly, etc. then there is a new studio version which changes a bit more like generalised translation of the chorus ジョーンジェットの犬→JOAN JETT’S DOG and with even an S at DOG
