Hi everyone...Just started using MusicBrianz yesterday, it looks like an awesome project. I've been using the MusicBrainz Tagger, and I had one question about it. Is it supposed to remove the cover art that I had saved in my MP3s? I tagged a few songs with it last night, and I noticed in iTunes that the cover art disappeared after the new tags were written.
      • bramp
It shouldn't touch the cover art files
      • amaiman
They're not seperate files, they're embedded in the MP3 (not exactly sure how that works, I haven't read up on it, but iTunes appears to store the art directly in the MP3 file)
      • bramp
it might be replacing the cover art tags in the mp3 files themselves, but I don't think it should be
      • Well you will have to wait until someone that knows how it works to come in here and say something
      • amaiman
I'll try looking into it further
      • Anyone know of a tool that dumps all tags/fields out of an MP3? Then I can compare a before/after
      • real
im sure it takes that junk out
      • amaiman
        Junk?
      • real
        the cover art
      • i think replaces the entire id3v2
      • bramp
It hasn't replaced fields such as comments in my ID3v{1,2} tags
      • real
        crazy
      • its APIC i remember i made a script to put em in and out
      • but i forgot now :((
      • the frame
      • and id3v2 -l shows id3v2 stuff
      • same with kid3 its really cool!!
      • amaiman
I checked the box in the tagger options to not clear the existing tag before writing the new one
      • But it still apparently does it anyway
      • real
that crazy tagger is known for being a rebel renegade and going freestyle mode on your tags
      • amaiman
Oh well, it's not that big of a deal. I'd rather have correct song tags. I can add the artwork back in easy enough (I can just sort by album and drag it in)
      • bramp
Storing the album cover in the mp3s seems wasteful to me
      • real
        :)
      • amaiman
I really want to use the "rename files" option to help organize my mess of a collection, but that's REALLY break iTunes
      • real
        to me too
      • bramp
but then again 10k extra isn't that much
      • amaiman
It looks cool in the iTunes visualizer, it shows the art in the corner
      • real
        but in every mp3
      • thats 120
      • and some are like 300k
      • amaiman
        I'm up to about 40GB
      • real
        thats 3 megs , one extra mp3 :O
      • ohh
      • amaiman
        In my collection
      • real
        that would be neat
      • bramp
amaiman my winamp shows me the album cover in a window
      • amaiman
Not 40GB of cover art :-)
      • bramp
but it reads the cover from the folder.jpg in the album's directory
      • amaiman
My problem right now is that my music is spread across two drives in no particular order. I need to buy another hard drive so I can organize it (can't fit two copies right now)
      • Once I have the tags done properly, iTunes should sort it into folders nicely with the 'Consolidate library' feature
      • bramp
        hopefully :)
      • amaiman
A lot of my music is strange stuff like Video Game soundtracks, those can be a pain to tag properly
      • real
especially when you get the tagger's addiction
      • jsimmons joined the channel
      • i hate that
      • you got one song thats not tagged right, cant let it go... one song not a big deal, have to find perfect tag for it, google, newsgroups, irc, blah blah and it basically isnt good
      • out of 10 hours of tagging, i bet like 3 hours to tag 99% of the mp3s, and 7 hours to tag the remaining 1%
      • amaiman
        Yep
      • bramp
ya.. I've been tagging my mp3s over the last few months... I do a hour or so every week
      • amaiman
Whoops, my finger slipped, I deleted that problem mp3, never listened to it anyway :-)
      • bramp
        I've got from A-M now :)
      • amaiman
With my dumb luck, my hard drive will crash right after I finish tagging. I've gotta go buy a backup drive soon

someone else find bugs in picard, I'm hogging the bug reporting thing :(
      • somniloquy
        Haha.
      • Mine keeps crashing or failing to write tags, but it's almost always on things with accents.
      • cikkolata
most of my accents are already UTF-8 though, it seems to like them most of the time.
      • somniloquy
I have had it say it's written tags and not actually done so, and had to re-tag and then remove the tags using foobar, then try again, and it works. I dunno why it's doing it though.
      • cikkolata
the latest thing I've found is that I can remove things like "Album Clusters"
      • but only under certain circumstances
      • gah, it's being too fast
      • cikkolata snickers
      • I removed all three of the folder things
      • somniloquy
        Weird.
      • I find it annoying that I can't select a bunch of things and manually cluster them...
      • Not really a bug though.
      • cikkolata
        it was funny.
      • I think that's on the things to do thing or something.
      • thing thing thing.
      • somniloquy
        :)
      • cikkolata
        I need a dictionary (or a thesausus)
      • somniloquy
        ...or a thesaurus.
      • cikkolata
        err
      • oops
      • somniloquy
My thesausus died out with the rest of the dinosaurs... ;p
      • Uh... thesaurus.
      • You made me do it now!
      • cikkolata
I was so busy making sure I wrote the not thea that I completely missed it x_X
      • somniloquy
I like having a dictionary/thesaurus program on my computer, personally, since I can type a word to look up quicker than I can find it in a book.
      • Hehe.
      • cikkolata
I have a dictionary, but not a thesaurus
      • somniloquy
Is that one of your pet hates? People saying it "thea"?
      • cikkolata
nope, but my brain tries to say theasaurus
      • somniloquy
        Hehe.
      • Well it's kinda one of mine.
      • cikkolata
I'm good at inserting non-existent syllables into things.
      • somniloquy
So many people do, and I want to punch them.
      • Twice.
      • cikkolata
        only twice?
      • somniloquy
        Maybe.
      • Twice at a minimum, at least.
      • cikkolata
        hehe
      • somniloquy
Um... that wasn't supposed to be tautologous.
      • cikkolata
the more simple errors bug me more
      • somniloquy
The "at least" was meant in a different way. Just reading it back it sounded odd.
      • cikkolata
your/you're makes me want to cry
      • somniloquy
        Yeah.
      • They're/there/their/
      • c_c
      • That last / should have been a .
      • cikkolata
it's one of the first things people learn, that's like saying acbdef, etc. for the alphabet.
      • it's and its stands out a lot to me now, but I can understand where people get confused with those.
      • stand
      • somniloquy
        Yeah.
      • ruaok
      • somniloquy
One thing that _really_ makes me want to punch people, a lot more than twice, is the whole "PIN number", "ATM machine" etc. thing.
      • Ask them what PIN stands for, they tell you. Ask them why they say "PIN number", they say it's because everyone else does. It's blatantly wrong. If everyone else raped 3 year olds, would they?!
      • cikkolata
        yes.
      • somniloquy
Damn. They're sicker than I thought.
      • cikkolata
I remember someone asking me if I'd jump off a bridge if my friend did when I was stealing gravel from someone's garden once and used the "'cause my friend was!" excuse.
      • I don't remember /why/ I just had to have some gravel.
      • somniloquy
        LOL.
      • Gravel's always handy.
      • cikkolata
I was only about 8 though
