teleGUISE: by the way, does your system use SIM cards or are your contracts simply bound to the specific phones?

LjL: our gsm is just like yours... except we use 800/1.9 vs. 900mhz/1.8ghz , they use sim cards

nikki_: i used WAP once to get to a mapping service, since i had gotten lost somewhere in the city, and i was in a hurry, as well

LjL, and that's why I've got Tomtom maps on my PDA :D

the only things I had in my phone were bbc news, yahoo mail and gner's train times.

I don't have a GPS reciever for mine, so I often navigate by doing a road name search and then getting my bearings

LjL, the only thing that comes as a downfall with those smallers ones though is that they're not as powerful as the larger multi-channel ones

mustaqila: i got an iPaq 3130 (black and white, 16MB ram) for 50€, and a GPS receiver for another 50€. it works quite well, for what i've paid

LjL: active networks here are Analog (AMPS) 800mhz, TDMA (D-Amps) 800mhz, CDMA 800/1.9, GSM 800/1.9 and iDen which is a quasi TDMA type MotoCrap network typically 800/1.5

mustaqila: now i have to palmtops, that iPaq and a Psion 5mx. now *that*'s a loveable piece of hardware, though it's too slow for GPS

LjL, ah fair enough, I'm lucky enough to be super paranoid about my possessions and the such, and they're always on me and I seem to check every now and then :) My pockets are starting to resemble that of an electronics store :P PDA, MP3 player and phone

mustaqila: yeah, mine too... but i'm not as lucky with paranoia. i do value those things, and i still feel guilty for that iPaq i had stolen (it was bought by my parents), but i just forget too often

LjL, understandable I guess, to be honest, I don't need the stuff I've got at such high spec levels, but it's nice and I enjoy the novelty, but practicly speaking, if I didn't have as much cash to blow back then I'd happily get by on lower models that just did the task I wanted to

teleGUISE: but it's nice to be able to, say, put your SIM card in *any* of your friends' phone when yours is out of battery, or things like that...

LjL: no :) while there are some small ones scattered we mainly have the big 4 ... Sprint/Nextel operates iDen/CDMA/AMPS , Verizon CDMA/AMPS, T-Mobile (GSM), Cingular (GSM/TDMA/Analog)

well personally, i'm quite happy with GSM right now... it works, it's cheap, and everybody has a GSM phone. i really hope we don't import too much of your mess ;)

but then, i don't even have a camera on my phone... strangely, i'm one of those almost extinct animals who think a phone should be used to make phone calls..
