I'm not saying that all these are bad

but usually the link is better off without the index.* appendix, since the index file is more of a subject to change than the rest

there could be special scripts etc, to redirect users who attempt url hacking to 'this is an unvalid link' or simmilar pages

webservers send the file defined as the index file if no filename is given in the url. that's standard procedure

that is true for all links. the way to solve that is to make it possible to edit the url in the xyz-url ar linking

usually. doesn't have to, though. filenames don't have to mean anything when they're server over HTTP

but it should link to .mp3 or .ogg or whatever on track level url

i would use someimage.txt as backrounds in my lj from my yahoo! account before i had payed for it, to circumwent their 'hotlinking images' deal, and it worked fine
