BrianG, a little too specific I think. If you have Translation you have to have Transliteration. I think the general consensus is to only add one new release status. Official, bootleg, promotion, -blank-
BrianG
Kerensky97: what about "Transl(iter)ation"
conservatives!
Kerensky97
I think that should be a possibiillty but some people didn't want parenthesis in the word.
Kind of a weak excuse but it could confuse the n00bs.
BrianG
"what's a virtual release?"
"oh a translation? why didn't you just say so"
and virtual and/or pseudo wont confuse anyone.. heh
Kerensky97
But ehy've been called virtual relases in the wiki for the last year or two.
psudo confuses me, I think that one is weird.
BrianG
and it's been marked as BadTermonology
Kerensky97
I think that's the biggest issue with that AR, nobody can agree to a name.
BrianG
but it wasn't in any part of the documentation though, right?
Kerensky97
None are really perfect.
mudcrow
confuse the noobs?! theres been over 100 emails about transliterations, I think whatever you decide, the rest of us will be confused
BrianG
it was only in the wiki as a propsed something or other
i think calling something what is it is apt for least confusion
ruaok returns from lunch with MB's new pro-bono business advisor.
Kerensky97
BrianG: Another thing to remember is that this all will be documented in the wiki and help docs. So any answer to a question is "Click the (Help) link next to the edit you're doing!"
BrianG
Kerensky97: yeah, but that should NOT be an excuse to not call a book a book
toxickore has quit
inhouseuk
from my experience people tend not to read help pages or links
BrianG
currently the release type/status help links are kinda broken
"alternate titles" is too vague
it can mean anything
and then that means people will start adding anything
and then we'll get tired of making corrections/voting no/explaining
with "alternate titles" does taht mean weezer can finally get it's "green album"?
Kerensky97
No matter what we call it people will ask questions, and people will put the wrong things in there. There is no way around that. How straight forward is Offiicial and how often is it abused?
BrianG
because we're conservative when it comes to adding new release types
no one wants "their furnature moved around"
tru
ruaok: what did he say? "you are doomed!" ? :)
ruaok
tru: he who?
BrianG
she?
tru
ruaok: the "pro-bono business advisor"
ruaok
oh.
BrianG
Kerensky97: there are plans for {transliteration/translation} tick box when applying the ar right?
ruaok
no, but he made me realize a few inconsistencies in my thinking. :)
tru
ruaok: that's good.
Kerensky97
BrianG: Yes
BrianG
Kerensky97: has anyone thought that if its ticked for one the release type could list translation if its unticked the release type could be transliteration
ruaok
but there is a lot of ground to be covered. MB/MeB has become quite complex with lots of history.
its not like saying: we make and sell these widgets.
tru
true.
Kerensky97
BrianG: I actually mentioned that on the mailing list, having the AR edit and the release type edit connected. My only reservation was I'm not sure how hard that is to work out on the developer side. And how it would work if the release being edited already had something set (say as a bootleg).
Nobody really responded to it though.
BrianG
Kerensky97: well the source would stay bootleg, but the translations would automaticly become translation/transliteration on the respective "vitual releases"
..release type
Kerensky97
That's what I was thinking too.
But I've never seen an AR that does two edits at once so I'm really hesitant how MB developers would take it.
inhouseuk
and what about the releases which have officially been released in more than one language?
BrianG
does anyone feel that the current RFC or RFV or whaatever is coming too soon?
inhouseuk
I think it is a mess and definately needs a lot more thought
Kerensky97
BrianG: It's all been debated but nobody was discussing it any more.
BrianG
has anyone proposing this stuff even discusses it with any of the developers that would implement it?
is AR really the best way to link this stuff?
Kerensky97
If the release is in both languages I'd call them both official, the "Original" would be the native language reaalses to avoid clusster issues with the ARs.
BrianG
does NGS discuss translation/transliteration release at all?
mudcrow
nope, not that I can remember
BrianG
!+quote <tru> true.
BrainzBot
Quote added. (id: 14)
Kerensky97
Most all of this has been discussed in the mailing list and wiki for the AR. Not sure about NGS though.
tru
hm? :)
BrianG
people want to get rid of bootlegs? *shudder*
mudcrow
I'd like to get rid of loads of dodgy bootleg albums and bootleg compilations - especially all those dodgy remix comps and hip hop comps
BrianG
well lets make pseudo realese first
then get rid off all bootlegs
..
then get star filtering out releases from 3rd world nations
lordprotector joined the channel
and also releases with a low number of pressings
no one listens to those!
Kerensky97
I made my own mix CD of dance music, burned 10 copies and gave it to local clubs. I even printed out CD cover and liner art listing the artists. But when I try to enter it into the database people vote it down because they say it's a home brew CD. It's not! I did it at work on professional CD pressing equipment!
inhouseuk
it's still a home made compilation, even if it was produced on professional equipment
Kerensky97
But it's been downloaded as a torrent 2000 times and growing! Everybody has my disc!
BrianG
good for them. if theres one or one million discIDs, so what?
find a better way to display them
i have a large collection of live bootlegs.. you start removing legit discIDs, than MB dosen't work right in programs that load meta data from MB
i'l be a little mad to find i have to keep adding my discIDs to release i've entered
inhouseuk
I tend to not remove discids from bootlegs
BrianG
make bootleg discIDs more fuzzy if you don't want 124823947987 discIDs
Kerensky97
I was being facetious. But it's not much different from many bootlegs, including alot of live versions.
inhouseuk
BrianG: the trouble with the fuzzy TOC matching, Grace$hit hold a patent on it
BrianG
i coudl care less how many discIDs a release has, as long as tehy all belong to that release
removing bootlegs to solve an asthetics problem is dumb.
s/dumb/not thought out very well
Muz_ joined the channel
Muz_ has quit
Kerensky97
I'd just like the option to hide them.
BrianG
i'd like to see it re-organized
ngs
Kerensky97
That would be ideal.
BrianG
where is artist type information used?
besides saying that an artist is a group or a person
or rather, one person or more than one person
lordprotector
which packages (and versions) have i to install that musicbrainz works in amarok 1.4.4
inhouseuk
BrianG: I think the discussion was about 'fake' discids on official releases, not about removing discids from bootleg releases
Muz_ joined the channel
Muz_ mooses in drunkenly
BrianG
don't have any real pressings but are distributed as CD-Rs?"
ruaok hands Muz_ a glass of water
inhouseuk
but most bootlegs are distributed that way
Muz_
Haha ruaok, you've seen me drunk before. I'm a nice guy ;)
ruaok
not drunk. maybe tipsy. :-)
but the water was for hang-over prevention. :)
Muz_
Nah, 3 beers == me more than done
I'm young, I say "piffle" to hangovers
BrianG
inhouseuk: i dont understand the point you're trying to make
ruaok
cheap date -- I miss those days.
inhouseuk
BrianG: many bootlegs are distributed on CD-R, there is little point in removing and discids from bootleg releases, unless it is obviously attached to the wrong place
s/and/any
BrianG
right
someone on the ml is sugguesting the removel of all discIDs on bootlegs that come from CDRs
inhouseuk
that is plain stupid
BrianG
yes
i didn't see where the discussion was about 'fake' discids on official releases, but about removing discids from bootleg releases
