musicbrainz uses musicip to do that.

musicip.com doesn't provide a lot of information

and they have a system of fingerprinting and full hashin to match.

can someone following this transl(iter)ation AR discussion tell me why "Translation" isn't an option of one of the future release types?

BrianG, a little too specific I think. If you have Translation you have to have Transliteration. I think the general consensus is to only add one new release status. Official, bootleg, promotion, -blank-

from my experience people tend not to read help pages or links

currently the release type/status help links are kinda broken

No matter what we call it people will ask questions, and people will put the wrong things in there. There is no way around that. How straight forward is Offiicial and how often is it abused?

but there is a lot of ground to be covered. MB/MeB has become quite complex with lots of history.

BrianG: I actually mentioned that on the mailing list, having the AR edit and the release type edit connected. My only reservation was I'm not sure how hard that is to work out on the developer side. And how it would work if the release being edited already had something set (say as a bootleg).

Nobody really responded to it though.

That's what I was thinking too.

But I've never seen an AR that does two edits at once so I'm really hesitant how MB developers would take it.

and what about the releases which have officially been released in more than one language?

If the release is in both languages I'd call them both official, the "Original" would be the native language reaalses to avoid clusster issues with the ARs.

I made my own mix CD of dance music, burned 10 copies and gave it to local clubs. I even printed out CD cover and liner art listing the artists. But when I try to enter it into the database people vote it down because they say it's a home brew CD. It's not! I did it at work on professional CD pressing equipment!

i have a large collection of live bootlegs.. you start removing legit discIDs, than MB dosen't work right in programs that load meta data from MB

i'l be a little mad to find i have to keep adding my discIDs to release i've entered

I tend to not remove discids from bootlegs

make bootleg discIDs more fuzzy if you don't want 124823947987 discIDs

I was being facetious. But it's not much different from many bootlegs, including alot of live versions.

i coudl care less how many discIDs a release has, as long as tehy all belong to that release
