How do I know if a FLAC rip has been transcoded from something rubbish such as MP3 rather than directly from a CD?

I have a feeling that I might have just downloaded tonnes of FLAC files which are truly lossless.

is musicbrainz opensource?

what data does the server contain in musicbrainz? can musicbrainz identify a mp3 file from its data content?

magicblaze0073: yes musicbrainz is open source, the audio fingerprinting is not

who does the fingerprinting? in picard, when i do a lookup, is fingerprinting done?

fingerprinting is done by http://www.amplifiedmusicservices.com/

and yes, picard uses it for lookups

so id3 tag information is public? where can i find it? is it in a postgresdb database?

music metadata is what musicbrainz has on it's website

and picard can stuff them in whatever, apev2, id3, vorbiscomment, etcv.
