        Hi there
      • I to stupid to find a FAQ how to submit PUIDs to the database
      • can someone give me a pointer?
      • _Dave has left the channel
      • liDEL
        plaisthos, using Picard?
      • plaisthos, You mean: to assign an existing PUID to a track, or to add a new PUID to MusicIP's database?
      • milosz3 joined the channel
      • plaisthos
I have added a new release to the database, then run picard let it pick the release, it assigned three tracks a puid. The other ones have no PUID.
      • my question is now how to get the missing puids to the database
      • Leftmost
I say we raise a ton of money and buy out MusicIP. Open source the whole PUID thing.
      • plaisthos
      • Leftmost
plaisthos, my understanding is that PUIDs probably don't exist for the other songs, and they can't be created without specifically asking the MusicIP guys about it.
      • plaisthos
        so missing PUID is "fine"?
      • Leftmost
It's not really a huge deal. It makes using Picard a bit less handy for people, but it's not the end of the world.
      • plaisthos
        Leftmost: thanks for your help
      • Leftmost
        No problem.
      • liDEL
plaisthos, if you REALLY want to add missing PUIDs, you have to register at MusicIP's site and download 'genpuid' utility which (using your personal key) can create new PUIDs and upload them to MusicIP's database.
      • Leftmost
Hmm. Does genpuid mesh with Picard at all?
      • liDEL
Leftmost, it is a separate tool doing different thing.
      • Leftmost
Right. I just wasn't sure if Picard was rigged to call it if it found something PUID-less.
      • liDEL
I just invoke genpuid with '-r 'switch, then it scans directory for audio files and generates PUIDS for them. If any of PUIDs was not present in MusicIP's database, it is submitted there automatically.
      • Leftmost
        Ahh, fair enough.
      • Does it submit information from the tag, do you know?
      • liDEL
But if you want to use new PUIDs with Picard/MusicBrainz you have to wait ~24h (there is some kind of cache or propagation delay of new PUIDs)
      • Leftmost, no, it just generates PUID.
      • Leftmost
Hmm. Alright. I guess I still don't understand the whole PUID thing entirely.
      • I still say a hostile takeover is in order.
      • liDEL
I am not sure about details of informations which are submitted - AFAIK genpuid is closed source.
      • Leftmost
        Yeah, exactly.
      • liDEL
        Leftmost, http://musicbrainz.org/doc/How_PUIDs_Work is a good start :-)
      • Leftmost
        I've skimmed that, at least...
      • I wonder what would happen if I started up wireshark and ran genpuid...
      • Hmm. For http://musicbrainz.org/release/5581f772-3e30-4d... I'm looking at the liner notes and Stevie Nicks isn't given full billing for track 8. She's listed as an additional artist: Stevie Nicks – Harmony on "Insider"
      • Should the artist be changed back to Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, then, and a relationship added?
      • Err, annotation, whatever the hell it is.
      • Eh, that's my interpretation of it.
      • plaisthos
        liDEL: thanks

[14:24] LeftmostI say we raise a ton of money and buy out MusicIP. Open source the whole PUID thing. <- lol
      • YES

That's my solution for just about everything, sadly.

"I can't run my games in Linux." "Well, crap. I guess we'll just have to buy Microsoft and open source Windows."
      • Muz
You;d be better off engineering a better algorithm from scratch that's open to start with.
      • PUIDs are generally rather shitty on several levels, beyond that of a technical nature.
      • Leftmost
Muz, something tells me that requires a lot more knowledge of acoustics than I have.
      • Muz
Leftmost: you personally don't need to do it. ¬_¬
      • Leftmost
Well, find someone with the requisite knowledge and convince them to do it. Until then...
      • Muz knows people with the knowledge to do it. Unsurprisingly, they're all paid silly amounts by proper organisations rather than piddling time away on open-sourced software.
      • See, therein lies the problem.
      • Muz
        Good luck changing the industry.
      • brianfreud joined the channel
      • Oh wait, unrealistic expectations? You must use OSS.
      • Leftmost
How about we raise tons of money and pay them to do it?
      • That, or raise tons of money and send me back to college.

Oh. Picard can't find sonm files bcause of UTF8 character in the directory name - ZZ Top - Dug?ello
      • Muz
What operating system, version of Picard and filesystem are you using?
      • Munger
I'm on OS X Leopard, the files are on and NFS share on Linux. Both the Finder and the shell display the accented characters correctly
      • Picard 0.11
      • Muz
Munger: naming a directory similarly within Finder on a local HFS+ FS, does the issue still occur?
      • Qt has had some issues with non-latin characters and network shares in the past...
      • Munger
        Yes. I tried that. If I replace the ? with u it's fine, so it's clearly a UTF-8 issue
      • LEt's se how it writes the new directroy when I tag it
      • It writes it fine to the same network volume
      • warp
Munger: ooh, unicode on OS X is fun.

      • Munger
What do you mean? I never had a problem with it
      • warp
Munger: in general, OS X normalizes unicode file names when writing. (seperating combined characters and such).
      • nikkitrain
        ugh that
      • Muz
warp: Qt on OS X is all levels of "fun" too.
      • This sounds a lot like a Qt bug that I had a few months ago.
      • Picard still uses Qt 4.5 I imagine.
      • nikkitrain painfully remembers arguing with samba because one side wanted nfc and one side wanted nfd >_<
      • Munger
Then the problem is in Qt
      • Muz
        Potentially.

Is there a way to get a full list of album IDs from the server? (running my own...)
      • navap
There are almost 800,000 release IDs, if you want a complete list the best way is to query the database directly.
      • wheels
Yeah, that was the backup plan.
