Now that we have multi-medium releases, how should different audio tracks on DVDs be handled?
nikki
jesus2099: the locale is used to specify the main official name for the language, so that things can select the correct name for the desired locale. imagine musicbrainz in japanese, which would display the work using the japanese name (same for artists too)
hawke_
Should each be a separate medium on one release, or should they still be separate releases?
nikki
different audio tracks on dvds?
hawke_
nikki: Yeah. like on a video DVD you might have tracks in different languages?
nikki
do you have an example?
hawke_
Or (in this case, the Metallica/San Francisco Symphony album S&M, you have three tracks…one of Metallica only, one of the orechestra only, and the main one, of both together.
nikki
I wouldn't use separate mediums, there's only one dvd
hawke_
Seems more wrong to have them as separate releases…
CatCat
seems wrong to even have them in mb
nikki
I would probably enter them as separate releases, but if you're going to have all the tracks in the same release, I'd say they should all be on the same medium
hawke_
CatCat: why?
nikki: can you have several track lists on one medium?
That would be ideal.
nikki
nope
hawke_
Then how would you put them all on the same medium?
Just treat it as if they were serial instead of parallel?
nikki
as one long tracklist
yeah
hawke_
ick.
nikki
how's that any different from separate mediums?
they're still serial
(except it doesn't say 3xDVD as the format my way :P)
hawke_
Yeah, but it also says 36 tracks instead of the actual 3×12
nikki
3 times 12 tracks *is* 36 tracks :P
hawke_
yeah, but there’s three each of track 1 through 12
it doesn’t go 1-12, 1-12, 1-12…all three audio programs are simultaneous.
nikki
you can listen to three at the same time?
hawke_
no, but you can switch among them at liberty, and they all fill the same logical time.
nikki
I don't really see how that makes using mediums a better option
hawke_
Only because you then only see one “release”, which it is.
they’re all on the same physical release

nikki, would you happen to know? Is it possible to enter a disc title without using the advanced editor?
I imagine I'd just enter them as "CD 1: Das Rheingold (1/2)", ..., "CD 14: Götterdämmerung (4/4)"
alex-hu joined the channel
nikki
jacobbrett: good question :) some people would say that 'cause it's on the cover, it should stay in the title
flamingspinach
or maybe "Part 1" and "Part 4" instead of "(1/2)" and "(4/4)"... (?)
dinog
is there an easy way to add performance relationships to multiple recordings on a release?
nikki
use the "relate to recordings" option
jacobbrett
Yeah, that's what I was thinking, though I think it depends on the intended use of the comment field... is it for disambiguation, or marked and/or unmarked version info ("special edition", perhaps)?
dinog
nikki: can you elaborate a bit on how that's done?
nikki
it's for disambiguation, but it's not clear how much of the existing information you're supposed to use when comparing them

I dumped some notes I made ages ago about the packaging my releases use on http://wiki.musicbrainz.org/User:Nikki/Packaging but I have a bunch of annoying hard to classify releases that aren't on there
the card hinges and foamy blob thingies... I have no idea if they have a name or not
Mineo has a few cds in a box looking like it's made of wood with a bit of imitation leather on it
are the cds in jewel cases inside the box?
Mineo
nope. the cds are in one of those paper-thingies, the dvd inside is hold by the box itself :D
nikki
I have a few that are jewel cases in boxes and a lot that have card sleeves that go over the jewel case, so I ignored those and mentally put them under jewel case (since we can only enter one packaging thing anyway)
