Hmm, can I still access the old server anywhere?
      • MBChatLogger
      • ruaok
      • intgr
        Thanks
      • kepstin
        (but it's read-only)
      • valeriopaolini
or the user interface letting users do the wrong thing
      • ruaok
        valeriopaolini: that is it.
      • intgr
        Yeah
      • ocharles
        valeriopaolini: it's not wrong though
      • warp
valeriopaolini: yes, so, we need to make changes to 1) discourage or prevent users from making these mistakes. 2) have a report so other users can find and fix these mistakes when users DO make them.
      • ocharles
I may have a cd that's by "Various" or "Musicians of the world", which is just another way of saying "Various Artists"
      • warp
ocharles: obviously in most (all) cases of this in our database right now it IS wrong.
      • ocharles nods
      • ocharles: that it should be possible because in theory it doesn't have to be used for evil does not invalidate valeriopaolini's complaint.
      • :)
      • ruaok
so, what is the right fix for this, so we can open a ticket for it?
      • ocharles
i can see the complaint, i'm just saying that it can't be "fixed", only discouraged
      • ruaok: what warp said, which is 2 things
      • i can handle the report easily
      • ruaok
would you please go open a ticket for this?
      • warp
        two tickets then
      • valeriopaolini
one possible check could be: see if there is an artist with that name
      • warp
ocharles: you make the report ticket, I'll make the other one.
      • ruaok
        fair nuff.
      • warp
        valeriopaolini: thanks, good suggestion.
      • valeriopaolini
I'm worried because i have the feeling that those artist_credits are being unlinked from their real artist
      • hawke__
Isn’t it a general problem, not something specific to VA?
      • valeriopaolini
on friday, there was Sting & the Police linking to V.A.
      • _Dave_ has left the channel
      • this is not an intentional edit, imho, sounds more like a problem somewhere (including pbkac :))
      • ocharles
hawke__: yes, there's not much stopping you linking "The Beatles" to point to "Pink Floyd"
      • hawke__
        Right, exactly.
      • kepstin
well, except from editor review, the same as anything else ;)
      • hawke__
kepstin: yeah, but if you can justify it, it would stay I assume.
      • kepstin
        of course.
      • warp
ruaok: which milestone should I schedule this in?
      • kepstin
once we solve the AI problem, then musicbrainz will be able to tell if your being correct or not itself. Until then, we have people vote on edits :)
      • ruaok
        warp: NGS +1 for now.
      • (or whatever that was)
      • since we determined it wasn't a dire data corruption issue
      • warp
      • ruaok
        thx!
      • hawke__
…If a recording has two songs in it, it should be linked to two works, right?
      • valeriopaolini
        thanks
      • kepstin
hawke__, yes, unless it's a fancy medley - in which case you might want to make a new work for it
      • but, in general, that's correct.
      • dinog joined the channel
      • hawke__
kepstin: Well, right. There’s the medley relation for that.
      • ojnkpjg joined the channel
      • kepstin
hawke__, well, actually, there's two different medley relations to choose between for that ;)
      • hawke__
kepstin: There are? I only see “is a medley of”
      • kepstin
        there's a work-recording AR, and a work-work AR, iirc.
      • hmm. release pages for releases that have a lot of track ars are much less impressive on NGS than classic :/
      • nikki
        for now :P
      • so impatient :P
      • valeriopaolini
I have another interesting case, can you help me understand what's going on?
      • nikki
        sure
      • valeriopaolini
there is an artist_credit whose name is [unknown] but in artist_credit_name it links to Marilyn Manson
      • select * from artist_credit_name where name=723903;
      • what is the purpose of this scenario?
      • nikki
either someone got really confused while using the editor, or there's a track credited to marilyn manson which we know isn't by marilyn manson I guess
      • valeriopaolini
interesting, let me dive into that recording :)
      • 97f1120d-85ec-4e45-8e68-b9b753475a6f
      • _bibi joined the channel
      • I can't find it!
      • hawke__
nikki: If I wanted to request additional work types, what would I have to do?
      • valeriopaolini
oops i did it again :) it's there
      • nikki
hawke__: not sure... probably an rfc style list
      • nikki prods ruaok
      • hawke__
valeriopaolini: Looks like they used that to say that they’re not sure whether it goes to “Marilyn Manson” or “Marilyn Manson & the Spooky Kids”
      • (or maybe someone else?)
      • ruaok
        nikki: ouch, quit it.
      • nikki
        hah
      • ruaok: the style list the right way to go about getting more work types?
      • +is
      • ruaok
        nikki: very good question.
      • I guess we need to come up with a plan for how to handle it.
      • valeriopaolini
it's obvious that I must study a little more :)
      • ruaok
the default is just to place that in the the hands of the style council.
      • kepstin
that's weird, the medium header is shown twice on http://musicbrainz.org/release/7c9d05d6-8645-4f...
      • hawke__
valeriopaolini: That’s just an educated guess.
      • In particular, I’m thinking we could use work types: waltz, polka, jig, march
      • fox trot
      • navap
        Those look suspiciously like genres
      • kepstin finds it amusing that there is no obvious work type to use for typicall pop/rock songs
      • hawke__
navap: er…I can’t think of any way in which those look like genres.
      • no more so than the existing aria or ballet
      • (or any of the others)
      • nikki
      • navap
Well by genre what I really mean is they look subjective. How does a user know which works should be classified as a march or a jig?
      • ruaok
wow. just under 9mbit of traffic now.
      • navap
Hm, I hadn't seen the existing list of work types
      • hawke__
navap: I’m note entirely sure how one goes about classifying them.
      • Partly based on time signature I think
      • s/note/not. :-D

      • New ATR has been in streaming for days and I just found out?!?!?
      • Better late, but still…
      • reosarevok is happy
      • hawke__
There’s a typo in the description for the recording→work relation for “is a medley of”: “orignial” should be “original” obviously.
      • nikki
        hawke__: yeah
      • nikki will fix it
      • kepstin
山I really should fix the japanese input on my desktop so it works in more programs than just my irc client
      • works on my laptop :/
      • kepstin ends up typing stuff in the irc client and copy/pasting it as a workaround :(
      • hawke__
        nikki: Thanks.
