when an english release has a track that has a French term as title but without the proper accents, are we suppose to assume the accents as present? I would think not.
reosarevok_ shrugs. It's error correction, in this case - Oxford gives it with the diacritic http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/coup-de-gr%C3%A2ce
reosarevok_
(so, it has it in "proper English")
Zastai
I suppose
reosarevok_
In general, possibly not, although I would probably correct it if the whole title track is in that language
(but not if it's used as a loan word since it's possible that English just doesn't use the diacritic for the word)
Zastai
I this case it's a loanword/term, so it could technically be seen as being in English
reosarevok_
I mean, in this case the diacritic seems to be correct both in English and French so I see no reason not to have it :)
Zastai
It just seemed odd to "correct" it to the French spelling when all other tracks have english names
Zastai goes off to replace da with the on rap releases :-D
reosarevok_
Well, it seems unlikely the lack of an accent is artist intent
Zastai
true enough
reosarevok_
If they had done something weird with it, then sure :)
Zastai
but since the artist is named Röyksopp, they're clearly aware that accents exist
reosarevok_
ö used to exist in Norwegian, so it's not like all diacritics are the same :)
chungy
They don't always have control over how the track titles are printed :P
reosarevok_
But yeah, dunno. It's tricky sometimes. I mean, "Que Sera, Sera" should be será in Spanish, or sarà in Italian, but definitely not just "sera"
chungy
In general, I think the proper French spelling should be preferred unless there is strong reason for artist intent.
reosarevok_
But that one is kinda written "right" without accents consistently
So, it's sometimes more of a case-by-case basis
chungy
and loan words with accents stripped are typically because accents are hard to type on English keyboards. :P
cafe/café or deja vu/déjà vu
Zastai
in any case, I don't feel strongly enough to want to change it; just seemed odd to depart from the spelling used on the release (and on the artist's official website)
CatQuest
I agree (with not using diatrics)
hawke
I lean towards adding diacritics, but I don’t think it’s that important.
CatQuest
rarg why do I find back to musicbrainz editing NOW when i'm supposed to do physics ://///
reosarevok_
Basically because you're supposed to do something else :p
Brains love to fuck up with us like that
CallerNo6 prefers adding diacritics too, but also agrees that it's case-by-case.
