wondering if there's a real difference between track position and number~?~ if I have a list of tracks numbered from one as ripped from the disc (CD), is this a number or a position?
i guess the question is how the CD format could have a number that's not a position
or maybe it's not possible in one format but another

exactly. vinyl numbers will often be different than position (A1, A2 etc)
but also, some artists like to get fancy and use different numbering schemes on their CDs.
