        someone on OS X, please help me test something: run in a terminal: python -c 'open(u"/tmp/" + u"\U00010916" * 255, "w")'
      • nikki is not gonna just run random bits of code without an explanation :P
      • nikki: python -c 'print u"\U00010916"'
      • VxJasonxV
Traceback (most recent call last): File "<string>", line 1, in <module>
      • IOError: [Errno 63] File name too long: u'/tmp/\U00010916
      • and it repeated \U00010916 like 50 times
      • xlotlu
255 times to be exact :)
      • VxJasonxV
        no
      • xlotlu
VxJasonxV: try replacing 255 with 64, and then with 64 please
      • VxJasonxV
        definitely not 255 times
      • xlotlu
        errm. 63 and then 64
      • SultS_
clearly it fails before getting to 255
      • VxJasonxV
        63 and 64 work
      • and 65
      • xlotlu
        that's strange
      • nikki
wikipedia claims hfs+ uses utf-16 for the filenames
      • and u+10916 would apparently be two utf-16 characters
      • xlotlu
nikki: their docs says something ambiguous like 255 unicode units i think
      • nikki
        try 127 and 128? :P
      • xlotlu
        yes, please? :)
      • VxJasonxV
        127 works
      • 128 does not
      • nikki
        see :P
      • xlotlu
        <3 nikki
      • VxJasonxV
        I'm bad at unicode
      • xlotlu
        thanks
      • and again OS X folks, what does this say? python -c 'import sys; print sys.getfilesystemencoding()'
      • utf-8. :)
      • nikki
        utf-8

I have a question about medleys. I am entering a band that plays a live medley of three covers of songs from other bands. How do I enter that? An AR between work <-> recording, which I would normally use for covers, gives me the option for a medley, but I lose the live and cover attributes. So what else can I do? Should I create a new work and then have work <-> work ARs indicating the work is a medley? Or something else?
      • forchia has left the channel
      • nikki
the best thing to do would be to propose adding the same attributes to the medley relationship :P
      • hawke_1
or removing the stupid cover attribute. ;-)
      • nikki
(there was a proposal to merge the two relationships, but it got stuck because it's hard to get the wording to work correctly if you do that)
      • (and I'm still not convinced merging them is the right thing to do anyway :P)
      • but I can't see why anyone could be against just making the two have the same attributes
      • MightyJay
haha... sounds like a good idea. But unfortunately I don't have enough time for the style discussions :)
      • I'll leave it on my todo list then :) Maybe I will have some more time in the future
      • thanks
      • nikki
I'm not sure how much discussing it would really need :P
      • MightyJay
Hehe, true. But I won't be near a computer for two weeks starting monday ;) I'll try and do it after that

putting the fun back in n-bombs
      • (well, depending on your idea of fun)
      • ianmcorvidae
        heh
      • mitigating their potential damage at least :)
      • there's more than one person who we're fairly sure has a saved edit search for edits with no-votes
      • so there's been a lot of things where it doesn't get any and then suddenly gets 3 :/
      • CallerNo6
when I'm being a good, voting citizen I try to start in the middle of the queue. Guess I don't need to do that anymore.
      • ianmcorvidae
well, wait until it's released :P
      • (well, for the plain *extension* it's already on beta. but the no-bomb fix isn't in effect yet)

ianmcorvidae: does this mean I can spam people by changing my vote between 'no' and 'abstain', or is that handled?
      • reosarevok
You probably can, but why would you
      • hawke_1
        I wouldn’t, but someone might.
      • Or I might accidentally (and limitedly) by changing my mind twice.
      • reosarevok
Well, the latter doesn't seem a problem
      • The former we can deal with if it ever happens
      • And I mean, just leaving a note would spam just as usefully
      • hawke_1
        perhaps
      • we can always burn that bridge when we come to it too, I guess
      • culinko
it's strange that someone can no-vote countless number of edits and never bear any consequences
      • i mean, voters are supervising the edits
      • reosarevok
Well, why should they, unless they're wrong No-votes
      • culinko
but who is supervising the voters?:)
