reading ISRCs in the terminal, some of them are gibberish. Does that mean that even the ones that /look/ legit might also be bad?

CallerNo6: reading ISRCs in general seems to be a process prone to produce errors, regardless of the tool or the drive you use
I'd just submit the ones that look ok and ignore the gibberish ones
CallerNo6
Mineo, thanks.
CallerNo6 wonders how the isrc submit scripts handle it.

hi all, I was wondering if there is any way of adding the acoustID tag to all the files on my collection using fpcalc directly, so when I load the files into picard, it's already "scanned"
the output from fpcalc is not similar to the tag, so I must be missing something
Mineo
CallerNo6: mine and jonnyjds look for duplicates, but that's about what you can do automagically. I'm not sure about the windows ones, though
luks
krusty_ar: you could theoretically add the fingerprints from fpcalc to the acoustid_fingerprint tag (i.e. TXXX frame with description "acoustid_fingerprint" for ID3 files)
but why do you want to do that?

CallerNo6: ISRC for windows, prefer using mediatools.exe than isrcsubmit.exe (except if you never have slide down bugs with it with your CD drive)
krusty_ar
luks: I'm reorganizing a large collection over a windows share on my linux machine and it takes some seconds to scan, the largest delay is on save tho, it seems it's done on the same thread
jesus2099: I was playing w/ icedax in linux. A few of the ISRCs are garbled text. But I'll look at the forums. Maybe I'll actually learn something. :-)

CallerNo6: the second link only can be helpfull as it is not platform specific but you can ignore the first link :)

Mineo, CallerNo6: I think cdrdao is one of the more reliable methods, I guess some drives might still be botched, though. Also, the disc may have been mastered that way.
jesus2099_
not sure about cdrdao…
jacobbrett
jesus2099_: It's been working great with my last two drives, compared to the other Linux-friendly method I used previously (forget what that was, off-hand).
jesus2099_
woops actually I don’t remember if I tested it… I tested EAC, Feurio, libdiscid, isrcsubmit ← all slide down bug then Tau Analyser quite OK but not 100% then mediatools always OK because very aggressive method
jacobbrett: I should try it on the CD drive that does dupe errors with all the others then (cdrdao exists on windows)
for the record, what’s cool with mediatools is : //Read upto 10 Seconds of each track to find 2 Successive Identical ISRCs
which is why I just fixed it and screamed here, instead of screaming at the user :)

I mean limited as in "special"

the plugin api wiki page sucks

ok, here's an interesting problem..some folders, no matter what I do, i get errno13 permission denied trying to save artwork as "folder.jpg" even though all the permissions are wide open and no attributes are set
culinko joined the channel
oh, i think i figured it out...sometimes i really hate windows
function1
also, the picard "lookup in browser" function apparently makes invalid search queries
I try to use "guess case" as much as I can, but it seems to not go by the Wiki page =/
Then again, maybe I expect sentences too often when they aren't a sentence
I think it needs to have actual punctuation for that, doesn't it?
jacobbrett
TheLastProject: I stress that you should manually verify all changes after "guess-casing" a release--I waste a fair amount of time cleaning things up, like the 2(c) examples.
TheLastProject
jacobbrett: Quite understandable, and I try to do so, but I'm somewhat confused by the rules right now and unsure how to write things =/
Like, for example, a song named "Prelude to The Sun Catcher" should be written as "Prelude to the Sun Catcher" on MusicBrainz even though "The Sun Catcher" is a name and writing it like that would conflict with normal English grammar? x.x
jacobbrett
Just post your questions here as you come across things, hopefully someone will help shortly
Hmm, I'm actually not sure about that myself, of all things.
reosarevok
If it's a prelude to "The Sun Catcher", I'd use The there
CallerNo6 would too
TheLastProject
Okay, in that case I will write "The Sun Catcher" that way, it seems most logical anyway. Thanks for your replies, everyone.
CallerNo6
We're pretty inconsistent, though, with "The Best of the xxx" vs "The Best of The xxx"
reosarevok
Well, that seems pretty straightforward...
jacobbrett
What gets me is "X and the Y" vs "X & The Y"--that's how I usually see the two forms, anyway
reosarevok
"The Best of the 90s" but "The Best of The Who"
CallerNo6
I agree. I'm just looking at releases, and we're pretty inconsistent.
reosarevok
CallerNo6: plenty of people disagree with common sense :p
(also, I bet guess case makes it "the")
TheLastProject
reosarevok: Guess Case does make it "the", yes :P
reosarevok
Yeah, it's meh-able sometimes :(
jacobbrett
Guess case is so convenient that people often don't bother to check it makes sense/follows guidelines. :(
DrDyna
ok, here is a really silly question, just to make sure my mind is thinking properly about how this works....if I save this album right now http://i47.tinypic.com/67oc42.jpg picard puts the tags from the album it thinks this is into all these files, right? not just the dark green?
TheLastProject
I try to, but I didn't understand it :(
CallerNo6
jacobbrett: so, "Peter Frampton and The Bee Gees" but "Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars" I guess.
jacobbrett
How do you make the distinction?
ruaok joined the channel
CallerNo6
One is a "band". The other is a collab.
culinko
reosarevok: many thanks for fixing that 3 releases!
jacobbrett
Hmm, I'm still not sure if that's correct...shouldn't a group of people who'd supposedly be referred to with a "The" prefix also always be capitalised?
"Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds"?
reosarevok
culinko, np :)
TheLastProject
Okay, 29 open edits, I'll stop "fixing" for today so I don't put too much of an unnecessary burden on those that have to check all of that =/
culinko
reosarevok: too bad i found some more stuff :S
reosarevok
:p
culinko
well, not so many though
CallerNo6
jacobbrett: I could see it working that way. But then is it "The Mamas and The Papas"?
jacobbrett
Why not? I'm genuinely asking for concrete logic. :P
DrDyna
to me it would all just depend on if "The" was in the band's name or if it's just someone using "the" to describe a band that doesn't
culinko
reosarevok: i just found out there is slovak name for our quartet and also an english
reosarevok
Merge into Slovak
CallerNo6
jacobbrett: At gut level, I prefer "The" too. I'm just trying to guess at other peoples' logics.
culinko
reosarevok: well i don't want to do any harm, could you please do it? i can help you with some research:)
reosarevok
heh
I mean, if it's the same artist, it's the same artist
But sure, as you wish
jacobbrett
Where does one find a professor of English?
ruaok
your local uni.
ocharles
"hello, 1 professor please"
CallerNo6
or at monster truck ralleys?
jacobbrett
Can I take one home and make it fix the guidelines?
