basically it's a compilation where the compiler obscured the original artist and track names

I managed to track down a few of the original artists, but many of them are still the fake artists listed on the cover

Maybe add an annotation? :)

(I saw it because the BBC assigned some play to it - the (different) artist was a bit bummed to be called a fake :D )

did you try using $replace(text,search,replace) or $rreplace which can use regular expressions?

it looks like mp3tag is only on windows, or am I missing something?

hah, looks like I found something at http://musicbrainz.org/doc/Picard_Qt/Plugin_API. Just had to get my google search just right :)

note that the last edit to that was march 2010, so make sure to crossreference with the code

note also http://wiki.musicbrainz.org/Picard_Scripting and http://wiki.musicbrainz.org/Picard_Plugins (the latter at least provides some example plugins)

I've had problems with in-place editing with picard

e.g. unchecking 'move' and 'rename', then using Picard to update everything. Some tags reverted for probably some reason only iTunes knows of.

VxJasonxV: I guess you don't want to follow my suggestion but: remove iTunes' library, retag all, reimport all? (maybe it will also lead you to decide to remove iTunes and use something else while you're at it :p)
