        heh.
      • man, Canada is entirely too massive.
      • CallerNo6
I assume Leftmost is looking at Chicago too
      • Leftmost
        Why's that, CallerNo6?

I thought that was the go to department in the US. Maybe I'm mis-remembering?
      • Leftmost
They're good. I was just curious why you made that assumption.
      • CallerNo6 was trying to discourage emigration :-)
      • CallerNo6
Or at least trying to encourage you to stay within the United States of Canada
      • kepstin
        oy.

      • CatCat
ooh man did you see that?

      • Leftmost
        CatCat, no.
      • ocharles
        Leftmost: I guess applied maths?
      • Leftmost
        ocharles, all discrete.
      • Algebra isn't a required course for a maths degree here, and I was most interested in discrete courses.
      • CatCat
        [21:14] CatCat(imho)
      • [21:14] CatCatthen the original artist might make much more sense
      • [21:15] CatCatand in strange exceptions like the one song becomes a famous song and idk
      • [21:15] CatCatbut this katamari thing seems clear cut -composer making a thing and inviting lotsa guys over to sing and dance and groove
      • [21:16] CatCatalso for soundtracks for most games (e.g. take zelda, pokémon, etc)
      • [21:16] CatCata fair lot is credited to their composer
      • [21:17] CatCattheir*
      • [21:17] CatCatman i am tired now
      • Leftmost
It makes sense in some cases to credit the composer if the composer is the primary credit on the album, but the performers are credited before the composers and, in the cases where there is no performer credited, NAMCO is fronted, not the composer(s).
      • hawke__
CatCat: Are we talking about whether the KD release should be credited to composer or various artists, or how the tracks should be credited?
      • Leftmost
        hawke__, tracks.
      • The composer varies by track.
      • CatCat
        yes
      • hawke__
Leftmost: yeah, I’m familiar with the release.
      • CatCat
but this yu guys is on most of them
      • kepstin
and it also credits vocalists on many tracks in the main tracklist
      • CatCat
        he seems the main guy
      • and according to wiki too
      • hawke__
I could see crediting the release to yu
      • but not all the tracks
      • CatCat
and definitely the vocalists should be credited too
      • CatCat wouldn't mind having yu as main "composer" but.
      • Leftmost
Just because the same guy composes a bunch of the tracks doesn't mean that they should automatically be credited to him, I don't think. I think the issue of primary importance is how they're credited on the album.
      • CatCat
now that we *can* have multiple composers per track
      • aw my floors are callign me and my hover is glinting in the corner looking ominous and ferocious

      • bitmap joined the channel
      • Leftmost
I just think that, since the composer isn't fronted in the credits, and especially since it's not cohesive in the sense of all tracks composed by the same person, it should be credited by performer.
      • warp
it should be credited to whoever the tracks are credited to (on the backcover tracklisting, or in the booklet).
      • CallerNo6
        Leftmost, link to release?
      • Leftmost
I'll link the edits in question. http://musicbrainz.org/edit/15652228 and http://musicbrainz.org/edit/15652247 ; there's a link to a picture of the obi/booklet in the edit linked in the comments,
      • warp
in case you don't have vgmdb account: http://frob.nl/mb/2011/COCX-32760-booklet-page1...
      • hawke__
And those are basically artist-credit level credits
      • The obi seems like the best source for artist credits, since the album back doesn’t have them
      • Leftmost
Obi and booklet page 1 generally agree, though the obi doesn't list composers at all.
      • CallerNo6
Is there a convention in video game music in general? Is it customary to credit the composer? Or is there no real "norm"?
      • kepstin
well, most of it is instrumental music, and is credited to the composer
      • it gets harder when some songs have vocals :)
      • warp
usually video game soundtracks do not have much vocals, so most or all tracks are attributed to the composer.
      • CallerNo6
would it be analogous to film soundtracks? some tracks are from the "score" (composer-centric) and some are songs by others ("music from the soundtrack")?
      • kepstin
except that many of the vocal songs are often composed specifically for the game, even by the same composer as the other game music occasionally.
      • CallerNo6 will butt out now
      • hawke__ votes for “as on cover(obi)”
      • Leftmost
kepstin, I'm not sure that whether they were composed for the game or as standalone music should affect who we credit it to, though.
      • hawke__
Leftmost: the release definitely should, we have lots of recordings credited differently depending on the release.
      • Though for the recordings I agree with you
      • Leftmost
Newegg sent me coffee with my hard drives.
      • kepstin
        lol
      • Leftmost
hawke__, I'm not sure I understand. Are you saying that whether songs were composed for the soundtrack or not should affect how they're listed on the tracklist?
      • kepstin
no, he's saying that how they're listed on the soundtrack art should affect how they're listed on the tracklist. I think.
      • hawke__
Leftmost: I’m saying that how the release displays them should affect how they’re listed on the tracklist, but not how they’re listed on the recording.
      • Although if they only appear on that one release, it will presumably also affect the recording
      • Leftmost
        Oh.
      • Okay. I'm not sure how to credit the recordings. For the time being, I've only been touching tracklists and release metadata.

Leftmost, that's the analogy I was refering too. In a film soundtrack, it /would/ make a difference whether the track was composer for the film. Consider http://musicbrainz.org/release/13cfea82-daa7-43... for example.
      • (that might be a bad example... Angelo Badalamenti might be performing on his tracks)

      • kepstin
we'll know it's bad once we hit the enterprise schema. we might have to cancel that a bit early and do a remake ;)

animated series? can't remember if that had a name.
      • kepstin
yey, I've unlocked the music menu for little busters, and most of the tracks. I guess I can now start updating http://musicbrainz.org/release/71bd4d50-5024-44... with the correct track order and titles...
      • reordering tracks in the current release editor is really annoying tho :/
      • kepstin uses the track parser to do it.
      • VxJasonxV
        ugh
      • the track parser is close but no cigar...
      • kepstin
and by the track parser, I mean copy to a real text editor, rearrange, and copy back.
      • and then I get a connection failed when submitting the edit.
      • VxJasonxV
      • kepstin
handily, I have the new tracklist saved...
      • yeah, it should just have 'parse tracks' and 'close'
      • VxJasonxV
        wow
      • the title of that ticket, and the contents, are two entirely different thought processes
      • the title is nice, but not covered at all by the description...
      • kepstin
every time you open the track parser, isn't it showing the current state of the release? if so, the title of the ticket is just wrong...
      • VxJasonxV
        eh?
      • if you open the track parser without having used it, it's empty
      • if you open the track parser after using it, it still has what you put in originally
      • kepstin
no, it's filled with the current state of the release
      • VxJasonxV
        hmm
      • I don't squarely remember if that was the case or not.
      • kepstin
so that ticket title is something that i can't reproduce, and that ticket content is something that is actually a bug
      • kepstin is using it right now.
      • VxJasonxV
I take your word for it though.
      • nikki
it worked fine for me when I tried it
      • VxJasonxV
        indeed, indeed it is.
      • Imagine that.
      • is/does
      • fix'd
      • Speaking of bugs
      • never mind, that was the "guess case" on whole release was broken
      • kepstin
there we go, http://musicbrainz.org/release/71bd4d50-5024-44... is now in somewhat less wrong order
      • amusing that the order shown in the in-game music menu and the numbering of the tracks in the music directory doesn't match.
      • VxJasonxV
        but completely unsurprising
      • CallerNo6
The first "official style guideline" template I can find is from 2009. Anybody remember if there was an earlier one?
      • CallerNo6 means the template indicating "official" status
      • nikki
there was probably a card in moinmoin
      • 2009 is when we moved to mediawiki
      • CallerNo6
        ah. right.
      • Thanks. I was just looking (yet again) at the history of CSG's officialness.
      • 2006 (if anybody was wondering) was the last official version.
      • CallerNo6 should get used to the idea that nobody was wondering.
      • ianmcorvidae
        haha
      • interesting to know
      • it's been de facto official for forever though, so :P
      • nikki
when I checked, it was official for ages until someone (accidentally?) transcluded a non-official version
      • CallerNo6
Yeah, I seem to remember the CamelCase version was official and The_Underscored_One was in development (or vice versa)
      • a pox on the CameCaseCabal
      • reosarevok
