        reosarevok: hæ?
      • hawke_
Now that we have multi-medium releases, how should different audio tracks on DVDs be handled?
      • nikki
jesus2099: the locale is used to specify the main official name for the language, so that things can select the correct name for the desired locale. imagine musicbrainz in japanese, which would display the work using the japanese name (same for artists too)
      • hawke_
Should each be a separate medium on one release, or should they still be separate releases?
      • nikki
        different audio tracks on dvds?
      • hawke_
nikki: Yeah. like on a video DVD you might have tracks in different languages?
      • nikki
        do you have an example?
      • hawke_
Or (in this case, the Metallica/San Francisco Symphony album S&M, you have three tracks…one of Metallica only, one of the orechestra only, and the main one, of both together.
      • nikki
I wouldn't use separate mediums, there's only one dvd
      • hawke_
Seems more wrong to have them as separate releases…
      • CatCat
seems wrong to even have them in mb
      • nikki
I would probably enter them as separate releases, but if you're going to have all the tracks in the same release, I'd say they should all be on the same medium
      • hawke_
        CatCat: why?
      • nikki: can you have several track lists on one medium?
      • That would be ideal.
      • nikki
        nope
      • hawke_
Then how would you put them all on the same medium?
      • Just treat it as if they were serial instead of parallel?
      • nikki
        as one long tracklist
      • yeah
      • hawke_
        ick.
      • nikki
how's that any different from separate mediums?
      • they're still serial
      • (except it doesn't say 3xDVD as the format my way :P)
      • hawke_
Yeah, but it also says 36 tracks instead of the actual 3×12
      • nikki
        3 times 12 tracks *is* 36 tracks :P
      • hawke_
yeah, but there’s three each of track 1 through 12
      • it doesn’t go 1-12, 1-12, 1-12…all three audio programs are simultaneous.
      • nikki
you can listen to three at the same time?
      • hawke_
no, but you can switch among them at liberty, and they all fill the same logical time.
      • nikki
I don't really see how that makes using mediums a better option
      • hawke_
Only because you then only see one “release”, which it is.
      • they’re all on the same physical release

nikki, would you happen to know? Is it possible to enter a disc title without using the advanced editor?
      • nikki
        no
      • I reported it, it was closed as wontfix
      • VxJasonxV
        :/
      • that umm
      • sucks
      • nikki looks for the ticket
      • nikki
hm. I can only find http://tickets.musicbrainz.org/browse/MBS-873 I guess the wontfix bit must have been on irc
      • I remember someone saying something about disc titles not being basic or something I totally didn't agree with
      • VxJasonxV
That does sorta make sense. Disc titles are uncommon.
      • nikki
but I usually just give up and wait, if people agree with me, I'll see more people complaining about it
      • VxJasonxV
My question earlier was... why not just parse it out of the first line ala. pre-ngs track parser?
      • nikki
        suggest it? :P
      • warp
VxJasonxV: we can change it later if there really is enough demand. but I think disc titles are pretty rare.
      • Muz
This totally needs someone with SQL wizardry to see what proportion of multi disc releases have disc titles
      • Muz doesn't have a working DB mirror anymoar. :(
      • VxJasonxV
I would take on that challenge if I had a local mbz instance.
      • nikki is importing the db
      • I'll add my thoughts to jira, for posterity's sake if nothing else.
      • Muz
        Go go gadget nikki.
      • nikki
well, actually, I'm currently deleting shit to make space for importing the db :P
      • VxJasonxV
by add my thoughts I mean, add a single line.
      • nikki remembers to comment out the indexes line to stop the import from failing

      • That's over 1%.

which is not all that much :)

      • indeed, 4 boxes, multiple discs.
      • yuck
      • nikki
feel free to figure out how to enter those in ngs :P
      • VxJasonxV runs
      • jacobbrett
      • flamingspinach
        I imagine I'd just enter them as "CD 1: Das Rheingold (1/2)", ..., "CD 14: Götterdämmerung (4/4)"
      • alex-hu joined the channel
      • nikki
jacobbrett: good question :) some people would say that 'cause it's on the cover, it should stay in the title
      • flamingspinach
or maybe "Part 1" and "Part 4" instead of "(1/2)" and "(4/4)"... (?)
      • dinog
is there an easy way to add performance relationships to multiple recordings on a release?
      • nikki
use the "relate to recordings" option
      • jacobbrett
Yeah, that's what I was thinking, though I think it depends on the intended use of the comment field... is it for disambiguation, or marked and/or unmarked version info ("special edition", perhaps)?
      • dinog
nikki: can you elaborate a bit on how that's done?
      • nikki
it's for disambiguation, but it's not clear how much of the existing information you're supposed to use when comparing them
      • jacobbrett: like for http://ngs.musicbrainz.org/release-group/7ba6ac... the catalogue numbers are distinct... but real people probably know them as jacket A to jacket E or something
      • dinog
        oh i've seen the option
      • jacobbrett
Hmm, well I think it is indeed disambiguating information (it probably wouldn't exist on the cover if it were the only version).
      • nikki: Hmm, on a related note, do you think those 5 releases should receive disambiguation comments e.g. "rain", "desert", "ocean"?
      • nikki
        that I just linked?
      • well, if you did mean those, then yes. even though I have all five versions, I have no idea which one to click without comparing catalogue numbers
      • JoeLlama joined the channel
      • btw, jacobbrett, do you have any ideas of what might go under "cardboard other"?
      • jacobbrett
nikki: Yes, that's what I meant.
      • Not exactly, though I'm sure there are many oddities.
      • I do know of packaging that folds out into a life-size boom-box for the CD to be placed atop, haha.

I dumped some notes I made ages ago about the packaging my releases use on http://wiki.musicbrainz.org/User:Nikki/Packaging but I have a bunch of annoying hard to classify releases that aren't on there
      • the card hinges and foamy blob thingies... I have no idea if they have a name or not
      • Mineo has a few cds in a box looking like it's made of wood with a bit of imitation leather on it
      • are the cds in jewel cases inside the box?
      • Mineo
nope. the cds are in one of those paper-thingies, the dvd inside is hold by the box itself :D
      • nikki
I have a few that are jewel cases in boxes and a lot that have card sleeves that go over the jewel case, so I ignored those and mentally put them under jewel case (since we can only enter one packaging thing anyway)
      • jacobbrett
      • nikki
but then I have a jewel case and slim jewel case contained by a card sleeve >_<
      • jacobbrett
      • nikki
that's not the sort I mean
      • http://lmfao.org.uk/digipaks2.jpg here's an old picture. the grey/silver is just shiny card, then there's a white foamy blob stuck to the card

      • nikki
me neither :) if you do come across anything, I'd love to know
      • Mineo would never have expected packaging to be like rocket science
      • they like coming up with newer, more annoying ways to make things not fit on the shelf or get easily damaged
      • ideally both, for maximum annoyingness :P
      • jacobbrett
I'm under the impression there's no "clean" solution for two barcoded jewel case releases sold together in a separately barcoded cardboard slip?
      • Since NGS was implemented, I mean.
      • nikki
        nope :/
