nikki: looking at the AR inheritance question. How would you feel about a flowchart? Would that make it easier to cram in more info and remain somewhat readable?

nikki
hm, maybe...

I'll play around with Dia and see what I come up with.
downside: it'd be an image rather than text, of course

question about recordings: are re-masters a separate "recording"?
nikkiphone
probably
luks
in many cases that's hard to tell though
as far as I know, we currently merge remasters
nikkiphone
we sometimes do
we have a release relationship for saying an album is a remaster
luks
yeah, inconsistent :)
might be easier to just merge remasters in NGS
nikkiphone
but at the same time we often just add another release event
luks
I wonder what are the advantages of not merging them?
for PUIDs, I imagine they look just like a differently encoded version of the same track
nikkiphone
yeah, i think people will tend to merge them unless they can tell they're different... like isrcs, relationships or whatever

luks: remasters often have distinct ISRCs
caller_6
well, are there any AR's that would apply to a re-mastered recording, but not to the original?
nikkiphone
the one for remastering the song ;)
caller_6
you'd think.
so there needs to be an entity for that AR to point to separate from the "original recording" or "ur-recording" or whatever it is
i guess in my mind, there's a layer that belongs between "recording" and "track" that represents re-masters, radio-edits and so on.
nikkiphone
i think it was there in the early diagrams... but ngs can't do everything...

and we have to draw a line between usability vs accuracy and complexity
caller_6
then should a "recording" hold info on multiple instances? (i.e. re-masters, re-edits)

hmm. an extra layer on top of recordings would be useful with the karaoke/instrumental mixes of tracks that I see a lot.
Because they are literally the same recording, with a slightly altered mix...
then again, it's complicated enough as it is, and the main benefit is less duplication of performance ARs.
in which case a performance layer between work and recording would be a solution too.

hmm. to make the character artist credits autoconvert in NGS, I'd have to make "エルシィ starring 伊藤かな恵" a collaboration artist between エルシィ and 伊藤かな恵.
I can't imagine people would be any happier with that in the current DB than what we have now :/

kepstin is tempted to try it to see if anyone notices ;)
caller_6
regarding karaoke: layer on top? or below? is a "recording" the master recording created during the recording session?
i.e. Work>Recording>"version">Track ? Or Work>MasterRecording>Recording>Track?

I'd forgotten about it, but I think there /was/ talk of a "performance" entity at one point too. Eek. Work>Performance>MasterRecording>"version">Track
caller_6 realizes this falls in the ridiculous territories of the usability/complexity map
kepstin
the karaoke/radio mix tracks are presumably derived from the same master recording
caller_6
yeah, I assumed that's what you meant
kepstin
If we want to just minimize AR duplication, Work → Performance → Recording → Recording (for remixes) is probably enough
caller_6
And they'd, presumably, have AR's that wouldn't apply to the MasterRecording
kepstin
hmm.
well, presumably you could have someone who does studio recordings, then someone who mixes them in a separate step
but then it gets ridiculous
caller_6
right. which makes even the earliest release a "re-mix" of sorts
kepstin
well, no, just a 'mix' :)
caller_6
ah. yes. that.
kepstin
of course, on a lot of tracks the recording and mixing engineer turn out to be the same person...
Hmm. what should I do when vocals done with an artist credit like "Chorus: エルシィ starring 伊藤かな恵". Can't do that in NGS because you can only link an AR to an artist, not via the artist credit system :/
