      • desrt
where do i donate to gain access to the 'good' server? :)
      • ocharles
ok... why is this not uploading. hrm.
      • kepstin
desrt, we're all just as locked out as you are :)
      • http://test.musicbrainz.org/ is still up if you feel like doing some beta-testing, tho :)
      • ruaok
hey, if the site isn't responding, please ping me.
      • desrt
        ruaok: ping!
      • getting lots of 504 gateway timeout errors
      • VxJasonxV
        /exec -o ping ruaok
      • :>
      • ping: cannot resolve ruaok: Unknown host
      • :<
      • desrt pounds the refresh button 10 times a second in hopes that it will fix the server faster
      • ruaok
        back up.
      • VxJasonxV
        that was fast
      • ruaok
        hmmm.
      • desrt
        sweet!
      • can we get you in the form of a python script or something? :)
      • ruaok
its our front end server that gets wedged for some reason.
      • desrt: there is that already. it supposed to automatically restart when this happens, but it doesn't seem to be working. :(
      • in any case, if you get any 5xx errors right now, ping me.
      • desrt
        now it's just insanely slow
      • probably everyone trying to hit the server now that it's back up :)
      • ruaok: uh.. ping.
      • ruaok
        what?
      • VxJasonxV
        he got a 5xx error
      • desrt
        it's 504ing again
      • VxJasonxV
you told them to ping you :P
      • ruaok
        right. let me correct that.
      • ping me with useful information if shit happens.
      • VxJasonxV
        heh
      • desrt
        :)
      • VxJasonxV
        by ruaok's decree
      • desrt
now it's 502 "proxy server error"
      • and now it works
      • and down again, i guess. hrmph :/
      • ruaok
ok, hang one. log gave a clue
      • ocharles hangs one
      • ruaok takes the one off the hanger and gives it back
      • ok, back.
      • settings adjusted.
      • hmmm. what is going on?
      • desrt
it's working very quickly for about 10 seconds
      • then it's back to erroring out
      • (well.. maybe 10 seconds is 1 minute... but it's working awesome for a very short time then breaking again)
      • ruaok nods

      • desrt
        iptables helps :)
      • ruaok
well, the rate limiter is shutting him out, but that might have knock on effects.
      • desrt
ettiquite is no more than once per second, right?
      • ruaok nods
      • ruaok
its more than etiqutte. is in CODE. :)

      • desrt
        seems to be better now
      • ruaok
yeah, not entirely sure what was going on though. the problem seems to have moved on.... for now.
      • plamere__ joined the channel
      • plamere_: hi!
      • desrt
so if an album title is printed on the cover art and on the CD and on the back cover and every occurance is in lowercase, is that considered sufficient consistent original data to override the normal capitalisation rules?
      • or is that probably just stylistic?
      • reosarevok
        Depends
      • desrt
        it always does!
      • reosarevok
Are all the tracks also on full lowercase?
      • desrt
        no. they're normal-caps
      • and funny enough, the title of the CD is also the name of a track
      • reosarevok
Hmm, then it might be intent :/
      • desrt
        except with different capitalisation :)
      • ya. that's what i thought
      • but another CD by the same artist has a similar issue
      • except in that case the album title is lowercase and the track names are all-caps
      • which i assume is -not- intent :)
      • reosarevok
Meh, this intent thing gets sooo annoying sometimes
      • I don't know. Any other opinions, people?
      • desrt
the artist's intent was to piss us off =)
      • hawke
        I hate ArtistIntent so much.
      • Too much burden of proof on the person invoking it.
      • PasNox joined the channel
      • desrt
seems like a good rule, to be honest
      • since the rules are the rules
      • if you want to break them, burden of proof is on you
      • hawke
IMO it should be "put it like it is on the release; if the release(s) are inconsistent then follow standard capitalization"
      • desrt
this entire conversation is what led me down the road to having absolutely everything in lowercase
      • hawke
Not "follow standard capitalization; you can only do anything else with statements signed in triplicate from the artist"
      • desrt
mostly because i was concerned with canonicalisation
      • now i don't care. in musicbrainz i trust :)
      • problem solving to deferral to an incompetent authority
      • doesn't really improve the situation, but let's me sleep better :)

      • kepstin is adding track-to-track ARs for all the different releases and versions of tracks on the various AIR related discs
      • kepstin
so far I haven't gotten lost, but there's been some close calls :(

kepstin: track to track ARs are hell
      • If you mess up and need some fixes approved let me know
      • plamere joined the channel
      • kepstin
heh, nothing yet that I couldn't fix up by just cancelling something :)
      • KingJ
        Good luck kepstin ;)
      • plamere_ joined the channel
      • Would be nice to see a music player that makes use of the track ARs at some point. I guess we've at least got the data ready.
      • reosarevok
Hmm, would be nice, but I don't know how to program it
      • So unless someone here knows and has the time...
      • Still, I don't think we have the data ready yet
      • Most of the releases have absolutely no ARs, and not all of them are even confirmed tracklists
      • KingJ
reosarevok: Yeah, that's the other problem. At the moment, there are no song tags that uniquely identify a song. There can be several entries on MB for ABC by XYZ but there's no tag for the player to tell them apart.
      • Would be quite nice if my player would say "You're listening to XXX, you also have YYY which is a remix of XXX"
      • reosarevok
Well, there will soon be with NGS's works and recordings
      • outsidecontext_ joined the channel
      • kepstin
hmm. does anyone know of a classical work with the name "Air" that might have the numbers 2 and 3 associated with it somehow?
      • reosarevok
        Heh
      • "Air" is not necessarily a work
      • Maybe it is just an "air"?
      • kepstin
this credit (roughly translated from japanese) is Orchestral suite number 3, part 2: "Air"
      • reosarevok
By the 18th century the term came to be used also for purely instrumental lyrical pieces, often movements of some larger work
      • Might be just the movement type?
      • kepstin
hmm. "Popular examples include the Air from the 3rd Orchestral Suite ... composed by J.S. Bach"
      • what do you know. Bach's orchestral suite number 3 has a second part which is an Air.
      • reosarevok
        Heh, that's other option
      • :p
      • kepstin
this credit is referencing the original music that the piece is a new arrangement of
      • reosarevok
        Oh
      • Then probably that
      • The only problem is the "probably"
      • kepstin
hmm. It looks like that's the case.
      • so, is there a correct way to link a track to say that it incorporations part of this composition by Bach using current musicbrainz?
      • symphonick joined the channel
      • the track in question is a modern arrangement of a game theme song, so it doesn't exactly follow classical style guide :)
      • reosarevok
        Hmm
      • I had a similar problem with the latest Kanye West album
      • I'd credit Bach as the composer together with any other composers you have, and add the specific work in an annotation because I don't think we have an AR for that
      • But maybe I'm wrong
      • kepstin
Yeah, since we don't have works yet, any relation would have to be to another recording :/
      • _Tsk_ joined the channel
      • kepstin wonders what the people subscribed to Bach will think of this composition AR :)
      • reosarevok
Meh, if you explain it a bit on the AR they'll probably not care
      • If you're worried we can always approve it before they ask wtf that is, but still, explain what happens in the AR :)
      • kepstin
yeah, The AR note should be good enough.
      • reosarevok doesn't know what died in his HTC Magic while updating, and is hoping it is the SD and not the phone
      • I don't even have a smartphone :/ just some cheap LG piece of junk...
