        argh
      • cat # VICJ61103
      • damn wireless keyboard
      • label is Victor Entertainment
      • dmppanda
Yes, if you look upward in the chat, you'll notice that's the cat I first proposed :D
      • BrianFreud
        ok
      • been going off the other cat #
      • dmppanda
(eternal) thanks a lot for the search! I think I'll stick with these track times.
      • ajh joined the channel
      • ajh
Got a link to genre discussions?
      • BrianFreud
        lol
      • cooperaa
        ajh: huh?
      • BrianFreud
christ! talk about torrent type pages...
      • ajh
I have my own ideas on how genre should be handled but I'd like to catch up on it.
      • (it being how people currently involved feel)
      • cooperaa
        by MusicBrainz
      • ajh
        Yet.
      • cooperaa
because it is a subjective thing
      • ajh
Actually it's not all that subjective, but you do need to have a very large knowledgebase to be able to deal with it.
      • BrianFreud
and 90% would prob end up Emo, like everywhere else
      • cooperaa
        I'd say it's quite subjective
      • you're not changing my genre tags to what you think or anyone else thinks my music is ;)
      • ajh
Which is why being able to do things like subgenre and multiple genre is important.
      • cooperaa
each song can have a different genre
      • ajh
If it was dont right we wouldn't have to :)
      • Yes, it can.
      • Or multiple.
      • cooperaa
I don't want to set multiple genres to 6 million tracks in MB ;)
      • ajh
I went to doing things like Rock/Prog Rock/Folk etc.
      • BrianFreud
I tend to think of genre as something that can't really be looked up in a database
      • cooperaa
        same
      • I think you can let people tag genres (like at Last.fm)
      • ajh
Perhaps, but it's critical to being able to do some operations easily.
      • cooperaa
        and trends will appear
      • HairMetalAddict has quit
      • dmppanda
isn't the upcoming "folksonomy" somewhat an attempt at that?
      • BrianFreud
it's kind of like musicip claiming it can match "emotional feel" of tracks
      • cooperaa
but people will be more accurate than others
      • ajh
The other options is actual analysis and fingerprinting to be able to do 'play other songs like'
      • cooperaa
        going down several subgenres
      • ajh
        Use things like bpm, etc.
      • BrianFreud
and can you imagine trying to vote on genre?
      • cooperaa
        lol, good point
      • BrianFreud
you'd have to leave the votes open a year just to find 3 ppl with the same track
      • ajh
Sure, let people override, but it's be nice if a new rip grabbed something.
      • cooperaa
ajh, I'd say wait for the tagging feature (which is on test.musicbrainz.org)
      • BrianFreud
ok, about to add some demo sessions
      • we're pretty agreed that it ought to be yyyy-mm-d1 - yyyy-mm-d2: for multi date boots?
      • cooperaa
        multidate boots? :P:P:P
      • throw them to the wolves
      • BrianFreud
        session demos
      • cooperaa
do the sessions have a name?
      • BrianFreud
        only a location
      • ajh
cooperaa, could you be a little more specific on what I'm looking for on there? :)
      • cooperaa
ajh: I'm not 100% sure how it works, I only played with it very quickly a while ago
      • but there should be links to add tags to artists etc
      • look up a popular artist like the beatles or metallica
      • ajh
Been backing up my music directory for almost 40 minutes now before running pIcard on it.
      • BrianFreud
        anyone know anything about flac?
      • cooperaa
        BrianFreud: its lossless
      • BrianFreud
        I know, lol
      • ajh
It's about 50% the size of CDDA.
      • cooperaa
ajh: good idea, but I've had no problems with tagging 16,000 songs at once
      • BrianFreud
wondering why occasionally, even when md5 matches, I get a flac bit failure when converting to ogg
      • cooperaa
        maybe your program sucks?
      • ajh
        md5 isn't perfect.
      • try using another fingerprinting method.
      • BrianFreud
        using dbpoweramp
      • well, actually using par2 + sfv + md5, all verify
      • ajh
        does flac store tags too?
      • cooperaa
        ajh: I lied... I don't see it on test.mb...
      • ajh
I've been considering moving entirely to flac.
      • BrianFreud
        too much space for me...
      • ogg -8 or ogg -10 is plenty good enough
      • ajh
        Yeah, but space is cheap.
      • lossless means one rip though.
      • because I want to rip in realtime so that I can eliminate jitter etc.
      • cooperaa
I keep my lossless as backups, but I only use MP3
      • BrianFreud
if you can find one track I can hear the difference between flac 800 bps and ogg -10, I'll move the entire collection to flac
      • ajh
        What's your output system?
      • BrianFreud
        sony surround
      • ajh
        You're fine. :)
      • BrianFreud
but even on my dad's high end $10k system, I can't hear a difference :P
      • ajh
It really depends on the track, some sounds don't compress well.
      • cooperaa
life's too short to worry about if you can hear the difference
      • BrianFreud
and if it really takes that kind of $$ to hear a difference,
      • ajh
I'm more concerned with loss from double compression.
      • BrianFreud
        I'll never notice it anyhow
      • cooperaa
if you can't handle the idea that you might be hearing a difference, then do flac
      • BrianFreud
        double compression?
      • ajh
Yeah, having to convert to something else later. Say when burning a CD in CDDA.
      • BrianFreud
lossless to ogg, be it from cd, wav, shn, ape, or flac, it's all a single layer
      • oh
      • cooperaa
but I think that producers should understand that people use portable media players and computer speakers and make their songs sound good out of those systems
      • BrianFreud
not an issue for me - I'm trying to go 100% digital
      • ajh
cooperaa, they do know that, most studios test using car audio speakers.
      • BrianFreud
if I could afford the space, my dvds would be 100% digital
      • cooperaa
yup, but that's what I mean
      • if its designed to play fine on your shitty systems, then I don't worry about it :)
      • srotta
cooperaa: I think they do, and that's one of the problems these days.
      • 8)
      • Sounds good on shitty system, sounds like shit on a good system.
      • cooperaa
it's not a problem for me and my shitty earbuds :P
      • ajh
I'm annoyed I bought the wrong card when given the choice of two.
      • I should have bought the AudioPhile 192 but I bought the 1212M.
      • cooperaa
(I do have good headphones, but I don't usually wear them to work ;))
      • BrianFreud
        ouch
      • ajh
        Heh, my earbuds are E4C
      • BrianFreud
and of course, that entire line has since been dicontinued
      • ajh
        Can't afford good headphones.
      • Oh, does 'remove' delete?
      • cooperaa
        on musicbrainz.org?
      • ajh
        Oops sorry wrong channel :)
      • Was talking about Songbird :)
      • cooperaa
        cool
      • I was really excited about that at first
      • but... not so much anymore
      • BrianFreud
this must rank among the longest release titles ever...
      • 1987-04-17: Out Of Order / Toy Train Crash Backside Bone Beefcake show, KAOS-FM Olympia Community Radio, Evergreen State College, Olympia, WA, USA
      • cooperaa
        that seems ridiculous
      • srotta
      • cooperaa
who cares what radio show it was on? I'd throw that in annotation
      • ajh
Does Musicbrainz do anything about album art? Would storing it be a copyright issue or would that be fair use?
      • cooperaa
fiona apple should burn in hell for that title
      • BrianFreud
        doesn't exist
      • Wikipedia does not have an article with this exact name
      • cooperaa
BrianFreud: something's wrong with your internet
      • srotta
        Included the dots?
      • cooperaa
ajh: we get cover art from Amazon
      • BrianFreud
        oh, mirc was dropping them
      • cooperaa
and CDBaby and Arkiv.org (I think)
      • BrianFreud
        holy christ!
      • ajh
cooperaa, yes the client does, but what about adding it to the database to help deal with things like multiple releases etc.
      • Since long term using those sites won't work.
      • BrianFreud
reminds me of this one - longest movie title ever...
      • cooperaa
and the has Cover Art AR
      • we don't store coverart in the db
      • we link to it
      • ajh
OK, that's what I was wondering.
      • Oh, is Musicbrainz only CD?
      • cooperaa
        no
      • BrianFreud
Night of the Day of the Dawn of the Son of the Bride of the Return of the Revenge of the Terror of the Attack of the Evil, Mutant, Alien, Flesh Eating, Hellbound, Zombified Living Dead Part 2: In Shocking 2-D
      • cooperaa
        digital releases, dvds, vinyls, etc
      • ajh
So if I rip a bunch of lacquer there's a chance it'll work?
      • BrianFreud
        I actually have a copy :P
      • ajh
I've got a friend who's got a stack of old victrola discs I've been thinking about ripping and remastering.
      • cooperaa
        go for it
      • BrianFreud
there's a small chance they're already in the databse, but I can pretty much assure you you'll have to manully match the tracks to a release
      • they definately won't auto-id
