      • CatCat
my first versino was 8 or something
      • <3 it
      • nikki
        I started with version 3.61
      • warp
        haha, wow
      • futurist2 has used it for 10 years, with some ff use too
      • nikki
it was very bad, I had to turn off page colours because it didn't understand most colour names
      • CatCat remembers this tool that caem in here and that berated everyone and called me a child for not thinking firefox was better than opera
      • futurist2
opera did tabs before ff was an orgasm in its father's imagination
      • CatCat
becasue ff had plugins and opera didnt
      • futurist2: loi, yea
      • nikki
yeah, the tabs were one of the big things I liked about it
      • xlotlu has quit
      • even though it couldn't render things very well at all
      • futurist2
its zoom has some advantages over ff
      • nikki
        the speed was the other
      • CatCat
        and zoom yea
      • futurist2
zooming the page rather than the text
      • srotta
It wasn't tabs then, it was MDI.
      • CatCat
and how yo ucan add notes
      • and use irc AND email lol
      • MBChatLogger
        I hate the evil empire
      • srotta
And it was bad because Microsoft was using it.
      • nikki
well, it was one window and that's all I cared about
      • CatCat
and you can use saved states
      • futurist2
srotta what was bad, mdi or opera?
      • Muzzz only uses Opera on mobile devices because there isn't a decent mobile version of Firefox
      • srotta
Then it was translated into tabs, and it magically became good and people wondered why MS didn't come up with that kind of wonderful innovations.
      • futurist2: MDI 8)
      • nikki
what's the difference between MDI and tabs?
      • srotta
Difference is that... well, basically MDI sucks and tabs are next thing to heaven.
      • No functional difference, but there's got to be something, right?
      • futurist2
srotta in a web browser, ms never *did* innovate that way
      • CatCat
in opera, you can define your own adressbar searches
      • futurist2
srotta there was no mdi web browser from ms
      • CatCat
so i got search on last.fm, and search on mb
      • and search on where the fuck ever
      • nikki
I have loads of dictionary searches
      • CatCat
        wtf is mdi?
      • nikki: juppityjupp
      • nikki
        multiple document interface or something
      • CatCat
        psh
      • futurist2
catcat the main thing opera is missing is better diigo support
      • xlotlu joined the channel
      • srotta
futurist2: No, but there was hell of a lot of other programs that used MDI.
      • warp
CatCat: you can do that in firefox too. (easily).
      • futurist2
www.diigo.com for all you metadata nerds :p
      • CatCat doesnt even know what diiedgieroo is
      • diigo is pretty sweet
      • CatCat
warp: but ff is sloooow and buggy
      • Muzzz
        Does Opera support microformats?
      • CatCat
        (atleast for me)
      • warp
CatCat: mdi = multiple document interface.
      • futurist2
if you do a lot of intensive reading ont he web
      • srotta
futurist2: And everyone thought it was bad. I've never understood why the same people think tabs are good.
      • futurist2
you can highlight and make popup notes on web pages
      • and they're stored in a central server
      • CatCat
being opneing several documents in the same thingy
      • is fine
      • warp
futurist2: diigo doesn't look like something which would be useful for me, intensive reading or no.t
      • CatCat
        word and seashore does it
      • most image ediotrs
      • futurist2
        warp how so?
      • warp
why would i want to make popup notes on random web pages? :)
      • CatCat
i can use bookmarks and notes in opera
      • futurist2
srotta it's the way of switching documents that makes tabs better
      • warp do you mak enotes when reading paper books?
      • CatCat
        no
      • srotta
futurist2: And how is that different from MDI?
      • warp
        futurist2: no.
      • duckman joined the channel
      • CatCat
i guess mdi has drow down menu thing only
      • futurist2
        there's the rub i suppose
      • CatCat
buunles yo udont maxermise tghe windows
      • the rub?
      • ¬_¬
      • futurist2
i do a lot of academic reading for university and need to jot things down, comment on the text, etc.
      • warp
futurist2: i tend to do that the other way around.
      • srotta
CatCat: Nah, pretty much exactly like tabs. Of course it looked a bit weird if you had multiple smaller windows inside a single window.
      • CatCat: But the earlier MDIs were similar to something like Mirc (it still has MDI available, right?).
      • warp
futurist2: that is, on a certain subject, have a single document with notes referring to other documents/urls. instead of keeping those notes with the other documents.
      • CatCat
        ah
      • then it dont get why that is supposedly "bad"
      • futurist2
the main thing i'm missing is a way to do heirarchical bookmarks within a webpage like i can in acrobat, since i find mapping hte structure of the document, and the arguments, is way better than random highlighting and note-typing
      • warp, ah, depends how closely you're reading a single text. too bad that linking can't be tighter, i.e. to specific sentences or words in webpages/pdfs/notes
      • warp
MDI is a solution to a problem which should not be solved at the application level.
      • nikki
I never really noticed a difference in how opera handles it... oh well
      • futurist2
warp well same with tabs, but ms hasn't solved it, so the applications will solve it for now, imo
      • Muzzz
        chrome://browser/content/browser.xul in Firefox is awesome
      • warp
futurist2: yes, that's the problem. windows and os X don't have a window managers, so we're all stuck doing that ourselves.
      • CatCat
      • Muzzz
I can't see what's so lame about what they said
      • ruaok joined the channel
      • warp
I can see what's so lame about the way they said it.
      • MBChatLogger
        fsck SCO!
      • futurist2
so muzz i'm still wondering about last.fm. there's no way to tag files from last.fm's databasr, if i udnerstand correctly, but scobbling correclty depends on having correct tabs?
      • Muzzz
        futurist2: for now yeah
      • CatCat
maybe if i link the thing to what he said to me
      • Muzzz
There are efforts being made though to consolidate multiple aliases to one entry, and to track recoggnition from fingerprinting
      • CatCat
      • thats why hes lame
      • warp
        eep, 20:00
      • CatCat
        and im a retard :D
      • hi warp
      • knakker joined the channel
      • Muzzz
Ignoring his personal insults at your spelling, he still has a point though, it's the whole ignorance is bliss thing in a sense
      • Sure, things may work for your now, bt they could be better and you just don't know it
      • CatCat
or maybe they work exactly the way i want them to and he just lieks to find things thats wrogn and complain abotu them
      • wtf
      • warp
        CatCat: hello :D
      • CatCat
sure there are *always* things that coudl improve
      • but ther eis nothing wrong wth opera in such a sence its botrhersome to use it or i have to circumwent it in a way
      • knakker
oi good day.. anyone knows if/how i can extract MB generated tag data from file to text format?
      • CatCat
why doesnt anybody belive me in this?!
      • warp
Muzzz: still, if you already know X doesn't fit your needs because of Y, then no amount of Z can make X be better whatever you're already using.
      • CatCat
i must be mad becasue im not complaining, so obviusly i am unavare of the problem
      • Wizzcat
        "firefox rulez"
      • CatCat
        warp: exactly
      • Wizzcat
        hahahaha
      • xlotlu has quit
      • Muzzz
warp, okay here's an example, recently I was given the task to design something in a manner which I felt would cater best to my needs, I did so. Sent them off and person X came back after having had made changes. I look at the changes at went "wow, this is actually awesome and not what I originally put down but better"
      • CatCat
some peopel need ot always have somethign to complain about. there *is* always some thing ,sure
      • nikki
CatCat: I believe you because I'm the same
      • Muzzz
It was just beyond my capacity to see how to better something and self analyse my own work processes heh

      • CatCat
but that wasnt what my point was about
      • warp
        oh
      • and my 20
      • meh
      • Muzzz
Things can work for you, you can see ways in which things can work for you too, but often it's possible to improve upon your practices without you even realising
      • CatCat
        warp?
      • nikki
there are things I would like to see (ruby support >_<) but it works fine for me

oh, there is one thign that bothers me, the ajax search in 9.5b is weird
      • but it bothers me because I can't work out what the bug is
      • so I can't report it >_<
      • warp
CatCat: my 20:00 comment is me being starting to become annoyed for being like xkcd.com/386 instead of doing something productive with my evening ;)
      • nikki
I have two 9.5b versions of opera and they both do different things with it, but 9.2whatever works fine, it's really weird
      • CatCat
im opera the only thing bothers me is. yo ucant drag text fro ma page and onto a field, fex, ie had that. and the hoverover tab picture thign coudl have an option to disable it
      • but these are.. not really life and death
      • nikki
I'm sure you can get rid of the picture...
