Hmm. Anyone found out what the hell is Google Chrome doing when it starts to trash your HDD?
alastairp
uh :-/
srotta
If I just open it and leave it there, after about half a minute it starts do something with my HDD. And it's doing it enough to make the whole desktop sluggish.
Muz
Wow, that's the first I've heard of that
I've been using Chrome for an hour seriously now and I keep finding small gripes that keep from switching it to my default browser
srotta
It probably sends everything to Google to use as they like (regarding the TOS)
Or it's integrating with Google Desktop and tries to reindex everything.
warp
Muz: flash isn't working here in chrome, I haven't given it a proper try yet.
Muz
wfm
Also, damn you IRC, I had an idea how to confront this bug and now I've forgotten :|
srotta
Muz: Just not having ad blocker is enough to keep it from regular use.
Muz
srotta, I don't ever use adblock on Firefox so that bothers me not
srotta
It was terrible to see the ugly truth of the Internet again :|
warp has adblock in his head, compatible with all browsers.
warp
too bad it also filters the current cdbaby design as 'domain squatter'.
Seriously, an ad block that jumps into middle of a news article with some animation and other ugliness?
And someone actually thinks that will increase their sales?
alastairp
but it's not tested against mozilla/webkit nightlies
Muz
I doubt that even then the Mozilla nightlies will fare much better than Chrome or the other browsers
LotR
noscript++ # who cares about the speed of the js engine when it's turned off anyway
alastairp
LotR: uh, my gmail account cares
Muz: firefox has a new jit js compiler
that is *insanely* fast
LotR
screw webmail.

warp
oh, flash suddently started working. weird google.
LotR: google chrome is aimed at speeding up web _applications_. If you're not using any of those, you won't see any benefit :)
LotR
warp: I wouldn't anyway, since it's windows only :)
Muz
There is the intention to make it available on OS X and Linux so you silly OS Zealots can pry your heads from your arse and use it in all due time
alastairp
LotR: and 32 bit
there's lots of really bad 32-bit assumtions in the code
warp
LotR: eventually it'll be open source and available for other platforms.
alastairp
like doing 32-bit math on pointers :-P
warp: there's an svn repo out
warp
alastairp: oh, nice
alastairp
someone I know is hacking on the js engine, trying to make it 64-bit clean
Remosi, in facr
fact
warp
Muz: I actually curious if it can eventually make browsers stable on OS X. because the firefox on windows xp at work almost never crashes, and the browsers at home do so daily.
+am somewhere
alastairp
warp: the multiple process is really nice
luks
warp: nobody will make it as snappy on linux as on windows
warp
alastairp: i suspect it's flash crashing them though, which isn't properly included in the sandboxing right now.
luks
alastairp: doesn't work as well as advertised :)
warp
luks: i do not currently use linux on the desktop anywhere. though hope to get back to it when I get a netbook :)
luks
a flash process managed to make the whole browse inresponsive
ruaok has quit
warp
luks: that is as advertised though, atleast in that comic book thingy
luks
oh
alastairp
warp: ah :)
luks: it's not snappy on windows, is it? ;)

luks
it is
but I don't see many advantages of this over something like Opera
except for the fast JS
replacing Firefox is very close to impossible for me
