Hi, I'm looking for some discussion on this edit (the title of Os Mutantes' new album): http://musicbrainz.org/show/edit/?editid=11694657

jacobbrett: ngs doesn't support pre-gap tracks properly
      • navap
What about adding an additional medium type, "pre-gap track" and then using that to store it. That way the track would be with the rest of the release.
      • Although..then the other mediums get bumped a number, so maybe that's not a good idea.
      • nikki_
I was thinking of a relationship
      • it wouldn't be perfect, but at least it would actually be linked to the release and things like picard could technically use the data
      • nikki
and I suppose that since releases will only be one release event (so it either has a pre-gap track or it doesn't), it would be easy to automatically convert the data when we do get proper support
      • navap
        That makes sense.

<navap> What about adding an additional medium type, "pre-gap track" why not to use track number "0"?
      • navap
I don't think the server/database is setup to specify a track "0", that's why we have a pre-gap track problem in the first place.
      • Dremora
you mean INTEGER data type is unable to store "0" value?
      • navap
Check out the bug report here http://bugs.musicbrainz.org/ticket/811
      • Dremora
this report is for the current codebase, not for ngs, so couldn't it be implemented for the latter? :)
      • navap
Quite possibly, but it hasn't been implemented yet. I think the developers have higher priorities than implementing pre-gap tracks at the moment.
      • Dremora
ok, so it may be possible in the future after releasing ngs
      • navap
        Yes I believe so.
      • jacobbrett
That's what I was thinking, simply implement it as track 0...

i need some assistance with picard (mac)
      • i have a folder of flacs
      • one album
      • none of the flacs had any metadata to start with
      • i opened picard and added all flacs to the unmatched files
      • after a few seconds it had matched them all and moved them to the rightmost column
      • where it listed 6 different albums
      • one of these suggested albums where correct but for some reason it only matched half of the tracks
      • that is, they had a green label next to their title
      • when selecting a matched track i could save it and it would get a green check mark
      • however, the other half of the tracks only had a green-yellow note symbol next to them
      • the old meta data section are empty for these tracks while the new metadata section contains the right values
      • but i can't find any way to make picard tag them with the data it found!?!? help!
      • jacobbrett
So the save button at the top doesn't work?
      • _Dave joined the channel
      • hopphopp
        no
      • jacobbrett: it only works for some of the tracks
      • the tracks with the green label next to them
      • jacobbrett
Hmm, is there any difference between the files that are green/aren't, ripped differently etc? pretty odd...
      • hopphopp
        no, they are identical
      • navap
hopphopp: The note symbol is a placeholder, it means that there isn't a file matched to that track. Did you drag the incorrect albums (in the right pane) onto the correct one?
      • hopphopp
i found a solution that was really weird:
      • i mentioned that it listed 6 different albums as matching
      • 9 out of 18 tracks where matched in the right album
      • the other 9 where spread out among the other albums
      • i had to drag one by one of these erroneously matched tracks to the correct album
      • then they where matched
      • navap: what do you mean by that there is no file matched to that track?
      • navap
When Picard loads an album in the right pane, it loads the entire tracklist and uses note icons as placeholders.
      • When a file of yours is matched to an album/track that note symbol disappears and a colour (that represents the accuracy) appears in its place.
      • Picard found 6 potential albums using your 18 tracks, that isn't uncommon. WHen that happens you have to pick the one that is correct and drag your files to it.
      • hopphopp
        ok
      • thanks

http://test.musicbrainz.org/release/c5af1c69-40... are cases like this where each disc has its own catalog number going to be solved?
      • navap
Dremora: What does "solved" look like to you?
      • Dremora
I don't see associations between discs and catalogs
      • navap
Ah okay, I don't think so. At least not yet anyway.

        Hello all
      • Got a release group question: Is it possible to list a release group under Various Artists with the releases under it assigned to specific artists? For example, on a 12 CD release titled Jazz Masters, each CD is a compilation of tracks by a one artist.
      • navap
        Yes that's possible.
      • ebisu
Ok cool, so if the individual artist CD's are already in the database I can just merge them into the v
      • Various Artists release group?
      • navap
        Yeah
      • Are they all already under VA? Or are the release groups credited to the same artist as the individual discs?
      • ebisu
Each CD in the box set is currently listed in a release group under the artist for that CD
      • navap
Were the discs also issued individually outside the boxset?

Sorry, lost connection. These releases were recently added by another editor and are still pending. Would moving them now be alright or is it better to wait until the original edits have been applied?
      • navap
Were the discs also issued individually outside the boxset?
      • ebisu
Oh, and to answer your question, no these CD's were not issued separately.
      • navap
Ah okay that makes it simpler.
      • It's okay to go ahead with the merge/moves now if you want. You need to merge all the relevant release groups together into one, and then move that one release group to VA.
      • ebisu
        Sounds good. Thanks :)
      • navap
        You're welcome.

Dremora: how do you think the data should be displayed?
      • I don't want to lose the links to the discs, but I'm not sure how I'd actually display the data
      • Dremora
      • but it's in case there's no need to link media catalog numbers with items from "released on" list
      • alastairp
        tending towards 1
      • is there ever more than 1 catalogue numger?
      • or because that page represents a physical product there is only 1
      • navap
I would hope the max is one catalog number for the disc and one for the release itself.
      • nikki
        hmm
      • I've heard of multiple catalogue numbers where one's for the label and one's for the distributor
      • and of course I know about per-disc numbers on loads of japanese stuff
      • but I can't think of a case where there are multiple ones on one disc
      • (physical disc, that is, not a whole release)
      • hawke_ joined the channel
      • I quite like number 1...
      • and I suppose if in some rare case there's multiple ones which only belong to one disc, it could just use commas to separate them
      • navap
Better than number 2, that would add quite a lot of extra rows for some multi-disc boxsets.
      • nikki
I guess the label should stay on the right, I can't see how disc 1 could be released by label1 and disc 2 by label2
      • navap
What if it was some crazy career compilation where releases that had been issued by different labels were released together.
      • s/issued/originally issued/
      • nikki
        I'm still not convinced
      • navap
I didn't really mean it as a real example, it was just a random thought.
      • hopphopp joined the channel
      • Dremora
navap: in this case the whole compilation would have been released by several labels, not separate discs
