not much to do about that, though it works better if you tag entire releases
      • gnu_andrew
ah so it's the compilation that needs fixing...
      • TronMe
our application TronMe rely on MB to give an ID to a track from iTune :(
      • if MB return an ID with a different album name or songname then we do not idnex it and user cant use his m4a in our player to add interactivity to his track
      • ok thank you for your help anyway, so we may need to create an ID by ourself

if an artist released their ep only through their website (as a freely downloadable zip file), should release country be [worldwide] or their country of residence?
      • (or something else?)
      • (and release date would be the date the ep was announced, right?)
      • Wizzcat
        I suppose so
      • TronMe
ok but so now the iTune track will even not match with any MB database
      • daveisadork joined the channel
      • because now you edit and change the existing Love Game to loveGame
      • daveisadork
hey umm, i'm getting ready to add a few artists to the site and i'm not 100% sure what i need to do
      • the artists are thai, and have names like ปนัดดา เรืองวุฒิ
      • at least that's the name as far as i can tell, i'm reasonably certain i have the correct english translation
      • Wizzcat
oh lord, googling that makes japanese look easy
      • navap
        heh
      • daveisadork
also, there are others which have a thai name like ลูกหว้า ดูบาดู, but amazon (and others) list the english translation as Lookwa (Pijika Jittaputta)
      • v6lur
Wizzcat: was your "I suppose so" meant for me or for TronMe?
      • daveisadork
which i'm assuming is something along the lines of lookwa = puff daddy, Pijika Jittaputta = sean combs
      • anyway, does any have any earthly idea of what would be the correct way to enter these?
      • Wizzcat
v6lur: you, setting a country for a blog zip doesn't make a lot of sense
      • "See more Baton catching balls." gee, great translation google
      • v6lur
okay, i did suspect so :) thanks
      • daveisadork
        yeah, google translation is useless
      • Wizzcat
daveisadork: I'm guessing lookwa is an artist alias, but it's hard to say for sure
      • the question is if the thai spelling is her actual name, and not an alias as well
      • v6lur
not useless... it gives quite good understanding of "general point" of the text :P
      • daveisadork
i think it is the thai spelling of the alias
      • well
      • all of the thai names are broken into two parts, like a first and last name
      • only one of them has only one part, which makes me think the others are just the thai spelling of their full name where that one is probably the thai spelling of the alias
      • maybe i need to print these out and go get some paneng today and ask someone at the restaurant lol
      • Wizzcat
bound to be some editors who can help you, though I couldn't say who
      • daveisadork
if i just add the english names of the artists, can someone who knows wtf they're doing with thai language stuff go back and do the proper names?
      • v6lur
hmm, Free Download Relationship Type shouldn't have direct link to the file, but to the page where the file can be downloaded, right?
      • navap
        Correct.
      • Wizzcat
daveisadork: I wouldn't bank on that ever happening ;)
      • daveisadork: actually, the thai name transliterates to lookwa doobaadoo it seems
      • daveisadork
        where'd you find that?
      • Wizzcat
      • daveisadork
        hrmm
      • i think i see what's going on here
      • the thai spellings i have
      • are the alias and the first name
      • so
      • for the artist Chonlanan Limthai
      • who uses the alias Lookpad
      • the thai spelling would be transliterated at Lookpad Chonlanan
      • afarghal joined the channel
      • are they purposely messing with us? lol
      • Wizzcat
well under that name at least there's a latin release, so you don't have to care about the thai
      • daveisadork
        there is?
      • oh
      • Wizzcat
      • daveisadork
well all the albums are in "latin" on amazon and itunes
      • so you're saying i should just do that and not mess with the thai spellings?
      • nikki
        thai names are ;_;
      • Wizzcat
daveisadork: just go with what the sleeve says
      • daveisadork
what about Nan (Wathiya Ruayniratana) and  Lookwa (Pijika Jittaputta)
      • Wizzcat
if she credits herself with a latin translation then great
      • *transliteration
      • daveisadork
        i don't have a sleeve, they're amazon downloads :/
      • Wizzcat
you've got amz album covers, good enough ,)
      • daveisadork
        ok
      • i'll just use the names as listed on amazon, but the question remains of Lookwa (Pijika Jittaputta)
      • and Nan (Wathiya Ruayniratana)
      • Wizzcat
gnu_andrew: heh, I was just wondering why you weren't autoeditor, gz in advance :)
      • daveisadork
should i add them as "Lookwa" and "Nan" respectively?

daveisadork: you'll just have to go with your gut, I don't realy know, just make an annotation to the fact that you don't know

        haha
      • warp sides with nikki on that.
      • TronMe
hi I would like to send an invitation to Musicbrainz reg users do you know where I could post this message?
      • newsletter or something like that?
      • warp
TronMe: we use blog.musicbrainz.org for announcements, but we'll only use it for musicbrainz related posts.
      • TronMe
well our Media Player is directly linked and using MusicBrainz to index the music so even if its a different product it's still related
      • kampsun joined the channel
      • Then do yolu think I can do it?
      • warp
not sure, it's probably best if you e-mail ruaok about it.
      • TronMe
ok do you have his email?
      • warp
he runs musicbrainz :), it's on either the musicbrainz or metabrainz sites.
      • TronMe
ok thank you i think 6 months ago he offered me this possibility
      • warp
he's also currently on holiday, so it might be a good idea to wait until he gets back. which is in about two or three weeks I think.
      • TronMe
oh its holidays in the US
      • warp
(though I expect he checks his e-mail fairly regularly even now)
      • TronMe
        ?
      • holidays in us right now?
      • warp doesn't live in the US and doesn't know.
      • Wizzcat imagines you can go on vacation when you want when you're your own boss
      • daveisadork
we have a large holiday the end of next week
      • but not right now
      • navap
It could be pretty chaotic if the whole of the US went on holiday for 2 weeks at the same time.
      • er s/could/would
      • gnu_andrew
        Wizzcat, thanks :)
      • herojoker joined the channel
      • ah wonderful the disc ID for Queen's Greatest Hits resolved to three releases, all identical but not merged because people want to represent the box sets...
      • TronMe
        ok thanks
      • nikki
people who hate the duplication because of box sets will probably really hate ngs :/
      • TronMe
        thanks cu
      • gnu_andrew
nikki, why's that? I've already learned today that ngs seems to have no room for relationships at the tracklisting level at present
      • nikki, I would have thought NGS would make it easier to represent them - a release for the box set, linking to the same track listing as the individual release
      • nikki
because ngs has releases which contain discs, whereas we currently have discs which contain release events, so 1 release with n events at the moment will show up as n releases (they can still link to the same tracklist, but it just seems like people hate having the same thing show up more than once)
      • nikki shrugs
      • navap
The difference is that currently we have separate tracks showing up separately, NGS will be the same track showing up seprately :) A vast improvement.
      • nikki
well we don't have one entry per track anyway, it's not like it's nice and tidy and duplicating a few tracks will make a huge mess :P
      • gnu_andrew
ah you mean like http://test.musicbrainz.org/release-group/69ce6... - they all appear to be separate releases
      • nikki
I guess I'm so used to seeing duplicates (as pseudo-releases...) that it doesn't bother me if someone duplicates a release for a release that actually exists
      • daveisadork has left the channel
      • yeah
      • I wonder how they'll show up when people do a cd lookup...
      • gnu_andrew
nikki, that's the bigger issue, currently you lookup the disc ID for Greatest Hits, you get 3 results, not 1:1
      • nikki, as imported it's going to be about 10-20 disc IDs in NGS...
      • nikki, but that can be cleaned up
      • sorry 10-20 releases per disc ID
      • oh not so bad
      • presumably it sensibly excludes the vinyl version from having disc IDs...
      • nikki
I was thinking more that you can merge the tracklists because the name is no longer linked to the tracklist... which is also the problem, since the name is no longer linked to the tracklist, I wonder whether it'll return all unique names or all releases
      • if that made any sense :P
      • gnu_andrew
yeah I was thinking merge the tracklistings too
      • then create release groups to represent the box sets
      • I'm not sure there's enough data associated with a tracklist generally
      • It can't even have an artist
      • nikki
well, if we tried to make ngs do everything it would never get done :P
      • gnu_andrew
nikki, too true, though at the moment it seems to be losing information
      • nikki
it loses a bit, but gains a lot more
      • gnu_andrew
that could probably be solved just by fixing the importing of pre-NGS data
      • nikki
well the best thing to do is file bug reports :P
      • if you find something the conversion script should be skipping, I mean
      • gnu_andrew
        I will
      • nikki
which reminds me that I need to test one of the fixes I did...
      • nikki needs a to do list
      • gnu_andrew
nikki, thanks for seconding my nomination btw
      • nikki
no problem :) I was surprised you weren't already an auto-editor
      • obviously we need a list of users who've made a lot of edits or something so we can go "what the... I thought he/she was an auto-editor! *nominate*" :P
