I have an MusicBrainz editing question regarding release groups.
warp
then you came to the right place!
nikki
(even though it's quiet as hell round here lately)
telle
It's my first time here so I do not have much to compare with...
Is this the best place to ask these kind of questions?
warp
telle: if you want a fast answer, yes.
telle: otherwise, you can also try the musicbrainz-users mailinglist, or the forums.
telle
I'll give it a try then :)
I have a recent (2009) release containing two discs: The first one is a re-issue of of the same album from the Seventies. However, the second one contains previously unreleased live material.
Do the two discs belong to the same release group?
warp
yes.
telle
If so, do they also belong to the release group of the original album?
warp
yes
telle
sweet
i thought so, but i wasn't sure
thank you very much
warp
you're welcome :)

Good evening. Would anyone happen to be about and willing and able to assist me with regard to using Picard, please?
If, indeed, this is the place to ask such things.
I forget. It's been a while. Sorry.
nikki
it is the right place
and your best bet is to ask whatever questions you've got and if people know the answer they'll say
Strygalldwir
Righto. I have two issues currently...
herojoker
(aka "don't ask to ask")
Strygalldwir
Noted. Thanks :)
Firstly, my dad's been trying to tag some MPCs and Picard is saying that a lot of them aren't valid MPC files. They play and re-tag fine in foobar. MP3Tag can open them and read the tags. Removing said tags completely doesn't help. This is in the latest Picard.
herojoker
so perhaps they are mp3 files just with .mpc extension?
the properties tab in the properties dialogue for each file may show what they actually are
Strygalldwir
I opened one of them in Wordpad, for lack of a hex editor, and it had MPC written right at the top.
herojoker
(in foobar)
Strygalldwir
MP3Tag reports they have APEv2 tags, BTW.
herojoker
i guess you opened one which was claimed to be not an mpc, right?
Strygalldwir
Yep.
I believe the album I opened one from was actually something I ripped as FLAC and then converted to MPC, so I'm pretty sure it should well be an MPC.
Unless someone's replaced my mppenc with lame, or something...
I'm also pretty sure he's tagged said files with Picard previously. This is a brand new error we're experiencing :(
herojoker
i think you should provide a sample
Strygalldwir
Where would I put it?
herojoker
you know that there are plenty of one click hosters, right?
Strygalldwir
Sure.
herojoker
just use one ^^
Strygalldwir
I'll grab a file. BRB...
herojoker
:)

Strygalldwir: do you know which version of musepack that is? picard currently does not support musepack sv8
Strygalldwir
I don't know. I'll check. The commandline encoder should report it?
outsidecontext
not sure, i don't have much experience with mpc myself
ok., that should still be sv7 and work with picard
Strygalldwir
I just copied one such MPC over to my computer and opened it in Wordpad, and it has the MPC header at the top and MusicBrainz database tags at the bottom.
So it has been tagged previously by Picard.

Strygalldwir: that's a musepack v8 file, no chance to tag this with picard at the moment :(
maybe they were converted from old v7 files?
Strygalldwir
Oh. Hmm. I don't know how. I converted a file from FLAC to MPC just today to test with Picard and it worked fine.
herojoker
it's offtopic, but why do you actually convert the files?
(i would keep the flacs)
Strygalldwir
It does only appear to be the files I converted for my dad, too, not the ones he ripped on his computer.
My dad doesn't have enough HD space to store lossless files, really.
herojoker
:(
Strygalldwir
So I keep the FLACs on here and convert to MPC for him to listen to on his computer or stream to his Xbox 360 via TVersity.
I suppose, really, I should stream the FLACs to his computer from here, but I never thought of that.
I can't figure out where along the line they'd get converted to the latest v8 type...
Especially since he's tagged these files with Picard before, and I haven't recompressed them.
herojoker
perhaps the app encodes it as v8 if certain conditions are true?
like a certain charset is used or something else which lets it decide to use v8 instead of v7
Strygalldwir
Could be.
herojoker
that would at least explain some "randomness"

outsidecontext_
strange, yes
mesula
I broke my hand. :(
I punched the back of someone's head.
Strygalldwir
What's the difference between v7 and v8? Just the tagging, or the actual music data?
herojoker
wow
how cool is that?
mesula
I got an x-ray scan today and turns out it's broken. :(
herojoker: Did I miss something?
nikki
I wish you'd stop changing hostmasks so I could ignore you once and for all
herojoker
why are you punching someone's head?
mesula
herojoker: He pissed me off.
I've never broken a bone before.
outsidecontext_
Strygalldwir: not sure, but they change the whole internal structure of the files
mesula
nikki: Who are you trying to ignore?
Strygalldwir
I really have no clue what's going on there, then. Very weird.
herojoker
well, then setup a deterministic testing environment :p
(and do tests)
mesula
herojoker: Will my broken bone win me the affection of a girl I REALLY like at school?
herojoker
definitely, yes
mesula
Yay!!!!!!
I've liked her for about a year now.
herojoker
do you additionally have a head like an ape?
mesula
But she keeps saying "no" to me.
herojoker: Ummm I don't think so.
herojoker
they like it, it makes them think you are potent, powerful
