can the tags have another name ?
      • i'm trying to use Mp3tag... it doesn't seem to have MBID
      • Muz
        TagLib!
      • Muz runs
      • navap
mib_atd0os: It reads the MBID's just fine, make sure you have the options set to view the right kind of tags.
      • mib_atd0os
well it shows they have the MBID if you go into each file's specific details window... but it doesn't allow to sort/filter or do anything else with those tags
      • navap
I would recomend adding it as one of the columns to sort by. Then, sorting by it.
      • You will instantly get the segregation you want.
      • mib_atd0os
        i'm trying to
      • it doesn't allow for those tags to be used for those actions
      • pbryan joined the channel
      • navap
Sure it does, I have done it.
      • mib_atd0os
        i'm adding a new column...
      • looking for the MBID tags in the "extended tags" where it is showed if you look at a specific files details
      • but, the MBID tags aren't in the listed options
      • navap
Try manually filling the value in, following the same syntax as the other tags.
      • mib_atd0os
        i've added MUSICBRAINZ_TRACKID
      • nikki ponders
      • i have the column... but it doesn't show the values
      • navap
Is that how the name of the field is shown when you view the details of a file?
      • nikki
for mp3s the track id is stored in the UFID frame
      • mib_atd0os
        yes
      • navap
Use the artist or album id, not the track.
      • mib_atd0os
        the same
      • and UFID also
      • navap
What tag format are you saving with?
      • mib_atd0os
ok.. i found how to do it
      • :)

      • thank you very very much guys!!
      • i really apprrieciate it!
      • however you write it :)
      • navap
        :)
      • mib_atd0os
just so you'll know - you need to right %MUSICBRAINZ_TRACKID%
      • navap wonders what mib_atd0os was using beforehand.
      • i didn't use the %'s at first
      • navap
I did mention to use the same syntax :)
      • mib_atd0os
yeah.. i'm already too tired :)

      • nikki
the back cover, inside of the liner, japanese lyrics section and official site all have the japanese titles... but the songs are in russian, so they have the lyrics in russian too in the liner, with the russian titles at the top
      • mib_atd0os
        thanks again and good bye!
      • rexroom
        what fun
      • japanese releases have a league of weird rules (altho' I have to admit being partly responsible for that)
      • mib_atd0os has left the channel
      • Freso joined the channel
      • it's got to the point where a release from a japanese band for an european market - which is wholly in latin characters - is all printed in all caps because of the too pedantic interpretation of ArtistStyle
      • nikki
I'm thinking... the japanese titles are clearly the official set and I'd say the russian titles are alternative official titles for the tracks, but as a track list, they're not really an official track list for the release as a whole...
      • heh
      • rexroom
        I've had that sometimes
      • gioele
nikki: that would make the russian titles good for an MB pseudo-release (instead of official)
      • rexroom
I usually just make a pseudo
      • nikki
people misunderstand it anyway, it doesn't come under artist intent first, it comes under consistency first
      • srotta
        Consistency with what?
      • nikki
the way the title is spelt/capitalised
      • srotta
Consistency would dictate that if the title is English, it should be written using English rules.
      • nikki
well, it doesn't help that there are two meanings for the consistency thing :)
      • rexroom
        Indeedly-doo
      • srotta
Only reason to write it in some other way is the magical ArtistIntent.
      • rexroom
but sometimes they have weird artistic capitalizations like.. I dunno.. MuSicBRAINZ
      • srotta
Yeah, and sometimes they write everything in small caps, or use idiotic fonts and glyphs.
      • That shouldn't force us to extend that idiocy into database.
      • nikki
as far as I've understood it, the whole idea behind the guidelines is that western artists are inconsistent in how they capitalise their track names, so we want to make them consistent
      • but most japanese artists *are* consistent, so there's no real need to find a way to make them consistent

I think a lot of people can read Japanese.
      • I think a lot of people can read Russian.
      • nikki
well, english people might think capitalising every word of a title is easiest to read and looks nicest, but speakers of most other languages are probably going D: D: D:
      • pbryan
        I can read neither.
      • srotta
pbryan: Yeah, and neither of them is English.
      • pbryan: I didn't say we should translate tracks.
      • pbryan
        Ah.
      • I'm no fan of MB-style capitalization -- Wikipedia helped beat that out of me with their section titling guidelines.
      • srotta
But if the track title is written in English, it's pretty stupid to pretend it's not and ignore the rules.
      • pbryan
But I do understand why it's there that way in MB.
      • And it's especially better than most releases, which just capitalize the first letter of EVERY word in a title.
      • nikki
srotta: they're guidelines, not rules :P
      • rexroom
people get those mixed up sometimes
      • pbryan
Heh, except people vote based on the guidelines.
      • (Not necessarily CapitalizationStandard, mind you.)
      • nikki
well, you generally have to give some sort of reason why the guidelines shouldn't apply
      • pbryan
BTW, notice the word "Standard" in that?
      • it's not CapitalizationGuideline; why is that?
      • navap
Because there is less room for argument when it comes to capitilzation?
      • nikki
because standard sounds better :P they're still listed as guidelines
      • pbryan
        :)
      • nikki
I used to hate the japanese weird caps...
      • but I got used to them, now it looks weird when people insist on some other capitalisation 'cause I'm used to seeing the same capitalisation everywhere
      • pbryan
Watching "The Word" on the Colbert Report is actually irritating, because they capitalize every word in their sentences.
      • The least they could do is adhere to CapitalizationStandardEnglish.
      • nikki
heh... and I remember when I used to use romaji for all my titles... but now I can almost read japanese I don't like using romaji anymore...
      • pbryan
        You don't say "Sushi" anymore?
      • It's 寿司?

      • pbryan

      • nikki
like tsunami and sumo and samurai... if I insisted on the originaly script for every word in english I'd be here all day switching between keyboard layouts :P
      • pbryan
        And translating, no doubt.
      • nikki
        yeah :P
      • Kerensky97
        What's the translation for tsunami?
      • pbryan
I have to admit, the use of logographic characters has definitely kept me out of Japanese and Chinese culture.
      • Kerensky97
        :P

        津波
      • nikki
or tidal wave... which direction did you mean?
      • Kerensky97
        That's the transliteration.
      • I guess tidal wave is good.
      • pbryan
        海嘯?
      • Kerensky97
I was thinking Big f'ing wave.
      • nikki

      • pbryan
Well with kanji, they're phonemic right?
      • nikki
        no
      • they have too many pronunciations
      • pbryan
        Oh that katamana?
      • Err, katakana?
      • nikki
        hiragana and katakana are
      • pbryan
        Ah.
      • Strange to have more than one writing system for the same language too.
      • Stange and deeply mysterious.
      • nikki
my favourite kanji example is 日... I've lost track of how many pronunciations I've found :P
      • I find it weirder that some countries have multiple official scripts which are completely separate
      • pbryan
        I pronounce it, "day."
      • I might be able to remember that character.
      • nikki giggles...
