      • wolfsong

      • LOL

      • mustaqila

      • wolfsong
        LOL
      • mustaqila
That and the accents, and then seeing the adverts too, it's like a new experience and I have no idea how to describe, it's just surprising and rather intriguing I guess
      • wolfsong
well we americans are inarguably a strange lot
      • mustaqila
Haha, I don't know, it's just different, but in a nice way, from what I've seen so far, and it's just really interesting

      • mustaqila has no idea who she is, although that name sounds vaguely familiar :
      • have you seen The Thomas Crown Affair?
      • mustaqila
        Nope :\
      • wolfsong
they VERY effectively use one of her songs in that
      • there's a point in the movie where a robber is in progress and there is no dialouge
      • mustaqila
Hmmm, from her last.fm page I think it may be familiar due to bombardment of now playings by yllona
      • wolfsong
        only the song
      • LOL
      • very likely
      • yllona has great taste
      • mustaqila
It's just not my cup of tea ;)
      • wolfsong

      • mustaqila

      • mustaqila sighs.. ahh my sweet Shania... :P
      • wolfsong
        LOL
      • mustaqila
As much metal as I like, I refuse to ever let anyone slag off Shania Twain :)
      • wolfsong

      • Up! is rock solid
      • there's not one bad song there IMO

question: what is the simplest way to query to musicbrainz database using php to just return track listings for a given album?
      • wolfsong
        no idea nwarner
      • may have to try a different time
      • nwarner
okay, is there a simple way to query the database?
      • fuchs
        download it ;)
      • you can't directly query the db, only with the web and the rdf interface
      • nwarner
        fair enough.
      • is the mb_server or mb_client the module that i would want, considering i just want the data for searching on?
      • nevermind. :P
      • Muti joined the channel

By the way, what do think about these so-called studio live albums?
      • I just found some of my records in the "live albums" section of the artist page, and noticed that's the reason they are there.
      • Personally I hate the whole concept. Not too long ago that was the only way to make recordings, but we don't put every old record to "live" category.
      • nechto13
i think if it's recorded without altering the sound of the performer, it should be considered live, but that's just my opinion
      • srotta
My opinion, on the other hand, is that if a record is "live", it should be recorded "in front of live audience".
      • mustaqila plays music in front of corpses
      • I don't care how the record is done in studio, that's just methodology. But there is definitely a difference when you play for audience.
      • nechto13
i imagine there are people in the same room, if not sound engineers then probably producers or corporate execs who came up with the idea of doing the in studio live album
      • srotta
        Heh 8)
      • nechto13
that doesn't necessarily make threm live though
      • *them
      • srotta
Well, if you think of it that way, every album is live. 8)
      • nechto13
        the corporate execs that is
      • that's why i define it by modification of sound using studio ecquipment
      • srotta
        Is that a valid definition?
      • I seriously doubt that even those live albums are unmodified :P
      • nechto13
if sound is modified then it's not live anymore. where would one go about looking for a valid definition?
      • srotta
        Well, here. 8)
      • I don't think there is an "official" definition. It's a question of how we decide to define those terms.
      • nechto13
or we could use this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Live_Album that way you'd be right :P
      • wolfsong
that's totally the wrong way to use live
      • srotta
Well, it's more strict than even I would define, but it has the elements that I'd like to see in the definition.
      • I don't think live albums should necessarily be recorded in concert.
      • teleGUISE has quit
      • nechto13
there you go. i guess by that definition if an artist can't get a large enough audience, then he can't put out a live album
      • srotta
        Hehe 8)
      • nechto13
awww, i didn't know eagles dubbed in cheering into hotel california, i always thought i heard live versions of the songs :(
      • nechto13 feels cheated
      • jnc
        nechto13: that's nothing
      • steve miller band is still playing their songs live
      • now the high notes are reduced one octave
      • so the old guys can sing them
      • ;)
      • we have writing department now
      • write some fan fiction about video games
      • whoops
      • jnc gets confused
      • i thought i was talking to wteph in #freematrix
      • my mistake
      • nechto13
i don't mind that. i can sympathize with the artists
      • jnc
it's just like, you don't always realise that the music can change
      • srotta
Yeah. I was once in a concert by a Finnish artist.
      • Between the songs he heard someone complaining that "it doesn't go like that".
      • So he said something like "Newsflash: It goes 'like that', I wrote the song. If you want to hear album versions, go home and listen to the record."
      • jnc
        awesome
      • srotta
Which is sort of the way I think also. I like to hear and see musicians playing, not replaying something they have done previously.
      • jnc
i'm impressed to some degree by artists that can pull off a live sound which is mint like the record
      • but yeah
      • srotta
Yeah, that's something else. It still doesn't have to go like it does in the record.
      • I enjoy some variance, artist forgetting the lyrics and pulling something weird just to make it sound like he knows what he's doing and so on. 8)
      • One guy forgot his old song's lyrics completely, so he changed from Finnish to French in about mid-sentence.
      • jnc
        classic
      • srotta
He had translated it into French recently, but it had been more than ten years since he had last been singing it in Finnish 8)
      • nechto13
it's actually a good thing, sometimes an artist can try alternative version of the lyrics if they remember those instead of what's on the album
      • jnc
USA bands talk a lot of trash about how hard rock 'n' roll is in the states
      • i think finns do it best
      • what's that one band, um, The Gathering, and also Opeth
