banyan: what i mean is you need to ask a more specific question

good night martin
banyan
I'm looking for the composer of the funeral march that Shostakovitch was quoting in his funeral march aphorism.
you know, do-ti-do-la-ti-so-la...
It's a pretty famous one but I don't know who wrote it.
also, in Saint of the Pit by Diamanda Galas, the same bit was quoted.
anyone know what the name of the bit is, and the composer?
nechto13
banyan: shostakovich's funeral march? is that funeral prelude, opus 130?
banyan
This is aphorism, the piano bit, it's about 45 seconds long.
nechto13
banyan: what's the opus number of the piece that contains the aphorism?
banyan
Um, lemme see if I can find that.
Opus 13
And I think it's the 13th bit -- funeral march.
It's 45 seconds of pure brilliance, not the least of which it leaves you with this sense of triple entendre.
nechto13
banyan: 13th piece? how could it be 13th if there are only 10 pieces in the opus?
banyan
Hmm, I have a Konstantin Scherbakov recording of it where it's listed as the 13th piece.
Sorry, it's the fifth one.
It's track 13! heh
Firstly, it has a theme woven into a bit of fast fingerwork, secondly it weaves the theme into chords at the end where the theme isn't the main melody, and thirdly it's actually from this other piece.

Actually -- I think it's #7.
The Danse Macabre.
nechto13
banyan: the funeral march is piece number 7?
banyan
No, the danse macabre is #7, and it's the one I was actually thinking of.
I erred in saying it was the funeral march.
But I think the original is some kind of funeral march or misericor or some such sepulchral thing.
And it's even possible that the piece I thought he was quoting was something he himself wrote later.

so, now that I have it sorted which piece I'm referring to, any ideas what the piece is that has the do-ti-do-la-ti-sol-la (rest) do-re-do-tl-la-sol melody?

nechto13
banyan: hmm, dance of death... no i can't find the composer by whom shostakovich was influenced there, even if it was himslef, which i think would be most likely. but i wouldn't put my money on it
nechto13 is not a betting man
banyan
It's a choral thing, I think I've heard it before but I don't know if it's 1800s or 1900s.
and I think it's russian but don't know.
It's not Mahler's, Betthoven's or Mozart's.
keschte has quit
Might be Chopin's...
Being as Shostakovitch had to do the Soviet's bidding, I expect it would have been a Russian bit.
Nyght
LOL I am fighting such a losing battle!
nechto13
banyan: i have to say that i can't think of any choral pieces that sound like they influenced this, even though i had 5 years of musical school in russia. so it's either i didn't carry much out of it or my brain turns to mush around 5am and i usually don't know it since i'm usually safely sleeping in my bed right about the time
MartinRudat
Nyght: people keep adding the same disney albums to the DB because they can't find it under disney?
Nyght
No... open moderations, we're over 7000 and I can't even get it down under 7000 even with approving!
banyan
Disney, like Under the Sea? or Fantasia?
nechto13
Nyght: you're not approving album adds are you?
Nyght
Thats' the disney he's referring to.
MartinRudat looks a little sheepish about editing the ARs for Miao Xiaoyun... =)
No Nechto, just approving ASIN's and spelling corrections, and that sorta thing.
you know, the shit that usually gets approved with lots of yes votes. ;)
I'm not bitching Martin, I just can't do much with the language barrier I hit with some of your mods. ;)
MartinRudat
language barrier?
MartinRudat speaks english only... what language barrier?
MartinRudat goes to look at what he's entered recently...
Nyght
oh, well last time I looked at your mods, there was a lot of ... um, maybe it wasn't yours.. I thought there was a decent amount of classical or else Japanese/Chinese.. none of which is my knack
nechto13 decides that 5am is a good time to leave the crazy world of MB
I guess Kerensky's were an oriental language and yours were classical!
Oh gods nechto13, you had to mention the time!
MartinRudat
oh, well... I've got about 20 classical albums to enter, most from deutsche grammophon... I imagine that I'll be typing in quite a lot of german in the coming weeks...
nechto13
banyan: try asking on a calssical music channel
banyan
suggestions?
Nyght
see! Though out of all the languages I have the best grasp on german, even talk to some Germans. :)
nechto13
good night everyone

Nyght
night, rest well
banyan
I take it Nyght's working on what, CDDB submissions?
Nyght
banyan, all the open edits, and then in my more insane moments Disney
banyan
That's got to be vast.
MartinRudat
Nyght: Ich nein spreaken sie deutche... which is probably completely wrong.
banyan
Ich spreche kein Deutsch.
Nyght
eh, we've got it (the bogus artist) down to about 42 albums.
Which is very good in my opinion.
banyan
Or ich spreche nicht Deutsch.
Nyght
;) A little bit Martin. I'll forgive you.
Though, I understood it, just like I sorta understand German :D
banyan
or Ich rede nicht / kein Deutsch.
Hm, so does this server have a classical-specific channel?
MartinRudat
I suppose I could go ask my dad if I really wanted to learn, or get a english/german dictionary...
banyan
The dictionary is just the words and vocabulary. The tricky stuff is where to put the words!
Nyght
Martin, just start talking to someone from Germany, and keep your mind open
or, it works for me. :)
MartinRudat
I'd imagine that this is the most musically-inclined channel on the server... well... I dunno about the musical taste of #debian, but it would be off-topic...
banyan
heh
Nyght
um, banyan, not that I know of, but I'm not a classical moderator, even if I did do my first classical piece tonight.
banyan
I should go to a different channel.
sorry, different network.
Nyght
And what banyan said about "where" to put the words is absolutely correct.
They, the German's think differently.
MartinRudat
Nyght: yeah, but they all speak in english... and better than some of the people 'round here do too... =)
Nyght
To the store, we go, their verbs go last.. or something like that.
true true
MartinRudat
...same with most of the people from europe that I've talked with over irc, too...
Nyght
we's jus' thoes lazy foos.. that tend ta drop letters without addin in punctuation so the apostrophe queen can paddle usses
yeah. I didn't even know Shep's native language wasn't English, just learned that the other day.
mudcrow has quit
well have a good evening there banyan, or day, or time of 24 hour period. ;)
MartinRudat
well... given the age at which people start learning a second or third language, it would be pretty reasonable to say that they speak english natively, too...
Nyght
point, in a way I wish I grew up somewhere that wasn't so bound to English.
banyan
Where is that Nyght?
MartinRudat should have paid more attention to people in high-school... I might at least be able to be rude in other languages...
MartinRudat
=)
Nyght
banyan: I should go to a different channel.(4:08:30 AM) banyan: sorry, different network.
that was in reference to you shifting channels or networks. banyan
Nyght chuckles at Martin
Oh, I can tell people off in other languages.. but, it's so much more fun to do it in one they understand!
Muz can be incredibly insultive in a multitude of languages
banyan
heh.
Muz
Not like it serves any real point though :\

Joan_W
only here because I saw the chat could be interesting
banyan
Do I take it, Nyght, that you and I are in the same time zone?
Nyght
