        :)
      • arrg,
      • :o
      • wtf
      • he's an automod?
      • why did an automod vote no on my mod witouth explanation
      • MartinRudat shrugs. odd.
      • inhouseuk
I've noticed that automod do strange things in the past
      • catmo
and this mod is also correct, you should never add 'is the child of' on compound colab artistsd
      • yllona has quit
      • inhouseuk
agreed, it should be to the individuals
      • ojnkpjg
        yeah, weird
      • seems pretty obvious
      • maybe a misclick?
      • catmo
        hmm
      • inhouseuk
      • it was grendel that added that ar
      • ojnkpjg
        :\
      • MartinRudat wonders if there's a way to get a list of all the collaborative artists (preferably the ones without collaboration ARs...)
      • Prodoc joined the channel
      • inhouseuk
MartinRudat: not totally accurately. Some artists that contain & or and arn't collaborations
      • Prodoc
        good afternoon
      • MartinRudat
        G'day Prodoc.
      • ojnkpjg
you can get some, at least, by searching for ' and ' with the old search
      • direct search
      • inhouseuk
        hi Prodoc
      • ojnkpjg
probably best to just dwnload the db
      • Nyght
It looks like he made the "artist" specifically to do the link
      • s/he
      • MartinRudat wonders if it would be a worthwhile passtime to go through all the collaboration artists, and add/link to the component artists...
      • Nyght is now known as Nyghtmare
      • ojnkpjg
        feeling bored?
      • MartinRudat
ojnkpjg: as an alternative to adding classical releases... =)
      • inhouseuk
MartinRudat: I can setup a report of artists with & or and in the name if you want
      • MartinRudat would probably end up writing a script to open up the appropriate mods for each artist...
      • catmo
        ugh no
      • some & and and artists are bogus
      • some are not
      • mom went home
      • nei
      • came home
      • so now I'm off for some tempura sushi and misosoup
      • MartinRudat
        mo: have fun.
      • catmo
        ja!
      • catmo hungrige
      • hungry in german?
      • ja
      • MartinRudat wonders how reliable check for the existance of possible compound artists would be to check bogusness of collaborative artists...

        select count(*) from artist where (position(' and ' in name) >0) or (position(' & ' in name) >0);
      • 22606
      • MartinRudat
wow, that would take quite some time to work through...
      • inhouseuk
plus there are likely to be some where 'and' is not all lower case
      • Prodoc
        got an issue again :D

      • They are identical despite what the artists in the album title might suggest. The second album shouldn't be a 16 track disc but 12 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000002RMU). It was imported from freedb as a 12 track disc (http://www.freedb.org/freedb_search_fmt.php?cat...) but additional tracks where added later. This is also the reason why the last 4 tracks don't have...
      • ...track times and the others do.
      • should a merge the two and re-add the second album or should I remove tracks?
      • Shepard
        mo: hungrig
      • MartinRudat
        ...remove tracks then merge? *shrugs*
      • inhouseuk looks
      • Prodoc
can't do both, or merge both 16 track releases and re-add or remove tracks and keep the trm's mixed up for the most part
      • removing the tracks would be the easiest but merging the cleanest solution imo
      • just asking for a second opinion incase I'm overlooking something
      • MartinRudat wonders why you're allowed to add tracks to a release pulled from freedb... or don't we trust freedb to have gotten the track-count right for a disc?
      • inhouseuk
MartinRudat: it appears they imported the disc and then added the tracks to it afterwards because they couldn't find the correct entry on freedb
      • Prodoc
heh, imo we should remove the freedb import functionality completely
      • inhouseuk thinks the freedb import should be still allowed, but non automods can only use it if they have the physical cd
      • MartinRudat thinks that that's fair.
      • MartinRudat hasn't imported anything he doesn't own so far...
      • we can't trust it at all and it overall produces more work than reducing it.
      • a lot of people don't bother correcting the tracks to the right style so by forcing them to input it manually I think we can reduce the extra work a lot
      • MartinRudat
Prodoc: but I'm lazy! though I do admit that checking can sometimes be slower than typing it in in the first place, but...
      • inhouseuk
Prodoc: I'd say merge them, but explain why/what you are doing in the modnote
      • Prodoc
        ok
      • MartinRudat would probably be worse at typing in classical releases without freedb... sometimes the albums there follow the MB styleguide... whereas all I know is the (often) travesty in the liner notes...
      • mudcrow like being able to import from freedb
      • BrianG too
      • Moonraven
*has to go* nice day :)

I also think the audio finger printing promotes people who have illegal copies to use the service. If they have a legitimate copy of something, they already know what it is and therefore don't need to identify it using fingerprinting
      • Prodoc
I thought about that as well, if it's just for illegal copies we should add ed2k links as well ;)
      • mudcrow
actually most of the music files I have that are badly tagged or have no tags come from music legally downloaded from an artists webpage
      • Prodoc
but if it was legal, you would have know what it is, wouldn't you?
      • inhouseuk
mud, yes, but you do know what the tracks/artist are. You can just select the tracks manually to tag them correctly
      • mudcrow
yes/no. depends when i listen to it, I usually go grabbing music for listening to at a later date, then find it has no tags

      • inhouseuk
ah :) a 'not enough free time' problem
      • Nyght
inhouseuk: I sorta disagree with your comment about audio fingerprinting. I legitimately own many different copies of the same music. I would like to know how accurate the greatest hits are compared and of course, the multitude of demo's I've gotten from the band's sites themselves.
      • MartinRudat ponders Herbert von Karajan... I don't think I've seen a picture of him when he wasn't grumpy... =)
      • inhouseuk
Nyght: yes, but you are using it for a different purpose to most users
      • Nyght
        that's true. ;)
      • Like, for instance, it was really cool to see which demo's went on the cd that came out after the production copy.. and honestly, musicbrainz helped me see that more than just musicIP software does.
      • MartinRudat ponders www.deutschegrammophon.com ... I wonder how hard it would be to screen-scrape the catalogue and feed it into MB... it looks like all the information is there for at least some of the albums...
      • That was always my "complaint" about the audio fingerprinting they did, they could give mood matching, and tell you very similar tracks, but at the same time, you couldn't get into the finite part of it to see what it was saying. Now, I almost feel like I can at least predict it a bit.
      • Martin, it would probably be breaking some pretty hefty copyright laws
      • Prodoc
MartinRudat: this goes for the Decca/Philips online catalogue as well ;)
      • MartinRudat
Nyght: hmm... TOS, I could see... but it's legal to read facts off a discography/the liner notes, but not from the track-listing on the label's website?
      • Nyght
It's touchy... to literally "scrape" their works and apply it here would be probably in a very grey area.
      • Prodoc
Nyght: But will it ever be noticed? We'll have to correct the styles a bit anyway
      • Nyght
and, it's not truly worth that, at least, I wouldn't feel it would be if MB was "my baby".
      • the bandwidth from the area doing the reading would probably be noted. The IP address.
      • yes, it would be noticed in one very particular way.
      • The way it would be noticed is our records would be glaringly complete in that area. :D
      • Prodoc
that shouldn't be that much of a problem, I'm browsing in the Philips catalogue quite a lot without them complaining. We could set up a bot which randomly picks a few releases every day ;)
      • MartinRudat
hmm... if I remember correctly, facts are not copyrightable, but the presentation of those facts are... which is why lots of things are described in prose when it isn't necessary... because you can copyright the prose, but not the facts it describes...
      • Prodoc
...not that I condone such an action...but it would be handy ;)
      • inhouseuk agrees with Martin's last comment
      • inhouseuk
        that is also my understanding
      • MartinRudat tries to find out if there's a TOS anywhere...
      • Nyght
Martin, I do believe that was more or less what we had figured out.
      • Nyght would love to do that with ascap's records and BMI
      • Nyght waits for yllona to swoop down and beat her senseless for that comment though
      • sidd has quit
      • Prodoc
this is the second time in 2 days that his/her name pops up, does he have such a bad reputation here?
      • Nyght
yllona? No.. she's very cool, at least in my feeling. Then again most people in my opinion here are great to hang and chat with
      • Prodoc
        ok
      • Nyght
if I truly had a problem with her, I wouldn't tease while she wasn't present. I would instead speak to her about it directly,.
      • inhouseuk feeds this album into musicIP mixer
      • inhouseuk
I very much doubt they'd have the fingerprints for it
      • Nyght
        what is it?
      • MartinRudat
hmm... is musicIP mixer available for osx? I feel like I've asked this question before for some reason...
      • Nyght
last I was on the site Martin, I seem to recall they had an osx something.
      • inhouseuk
      • Nyght
Mmmm, you may very well be right inhouseuk! that's not the normal run of the mill ELO
      • Nyght thinks track 9 would be very pleasing to listen to
      • inhouseuk
I've been looking for that album for a while, it's quite rare and happened to see a copy on ebay last week
      • Nyght: amazingly they did have the finger prints. It didn't need to the long analysis on any of the tracks!
      • inhouseuk goes to run it through picard

      • err... tr/k/l/;
      • Joan: what's up?
      • Joan_W
okay martin - I am adding some links to Amazon. I have checked the album on Amazon - track listing corresponds with one in database, it is not an import, cover art is there but when I add the ASIN all I get is grey in the space where the cover should be. It does, however, link to Amazon in the buy and info sections.
      • nikki_
        hi joan!
      • Joan_W
        hi nikki
      • Shepard
hi joan, link to amazon please?
      • MartinRudat
Joan: perhaps it's a good scan from a third party? amazon might not actually be selling any copies... and thus doesn't have its own cover art...
      • Joan_W
      • but at least if it links in with the buy and info buttons, then we are getting revenue from Amazon?
      • Shepard
        yeah it's a customer image
