well i'd rather add to the load than to duplicate "real" data everywhere
as in i'd rather compute inherited values than to actually store them as basically duplicates

People can donate to pay for more mice to run the little wheels inside the servers.
deadchip
the advantage is obvious anyway
it's like with SQL views
if you change the parent value then all child values that are inherited change automatically with it
srotta
Of course. Although there's some point in also adding redundancy - real-life database are rarely in some normalized form that doesn't include any redundancy.
deadchip
the only troublesome situation would be where you need to 'break up' the inheritance
srotta
In this case there's no need for that, though.
deadchip
then you would need to apply the inherited value as a real value for each child item
and eventually remove it from one or more of them
that's a somewhat complex procedure in relative terms
srotta
Because the choices are basically "add an album relationship" or "no relationships at all" - most of the people won't add AR's for every damn track in totally cover albums.
There are of course other AR's that could (and should?) be inherited.
deadchip
hmmmm
well
this also brings to mind how much the clients should do or not
srotta
For example, if we one day get to the point that there's actually some information about the roles of the musicians in the band, it would make no sense to add that information to every track.
deadchip
srotta: you can basically emulate inheritance to some degree completely client-side
take as an example the webservices results
srotta
Of course, and it should be done there, if there are clear rules on how to apply it.

Hello
So I just did a very stupid thing
I was highlighting my music files to transfer them to my mp3 player
slaad
And *whammo* you deleted them?
Melbastard
after I had highlighted all the ones I wanted, I see this song called "led zepplin - no quarter"
and I think "I gotta fix that"
so now all my files are called led zeppelin - no quarter
including album folders
Shepard
ugh
Melbastard
:(
Shepard
now you can only sort them out by acoustic fingerprints
Melbastard
is there anything I can do? cause now I'm looking at 900 files and folders with the exact same name
maybe system restore. Even though I doubt that has anything to do with this
question mark after "maybe system restore"
srotta has quit
Shepard
try analysing them with Picard and see if it has a fingerprint for them. if not, you can try the old tagger which uses a different fingerprinting system (we have still more of those IDs)
Melbastard
I could always run the tagger on the mall, but that would take ages and ages
ok, I'll try that
Shepard
what OS?
Melbastard
XP
fucking hell
Shepard
ah, don't think there's a way to undo any file renames
Melbastard
the moment my comp suddenly froze for a period of time I was like "no way XP is THAT shit"
yay
well msot of them are tagged from before, so running them in winamp would get real file names
for most of them
Shepard
they still have the correct ID3 data?
Melbastard
probably
but not nearly all of them
Shepard
well then restoring them names shouldn't be a big problem with the tagger, just a lot of work
Melbastard
precisely :(
Shepard
could be worse ;)

Melbastard
not really
I wonder if anyone has ever done this in such a large scale before
Shepard
hey, my music folder contains nearly 11000 files, *that* would be a problem :D
