cikkolata runs off to find the ibook's power cable
mexon
Hooray!
Hmm, your cry for help over email summaries is making me guilty :-(
I'm a lazy, lazy boy.
cikkolata thinks mexon had some good points...
_mo
*some*
mexon
:-)
Devil's advocate, over here.
cikkolata laughs
cikkolata
as long as nobody makes me use javascript, I think I'm fine.
Shepard
i like your idea of simplifying the design that way
mexon
There are lots of ways to simplify the design. Most of them turn out to be impossible in practice :-(
cikkolata
I like the idea of the front page being simpler
_mo
HM
cikkolata
when I first saw mb it was confusing
mexon
Like Google. It gets complicated once you start using it, but the front page makes it all look so easy
cikkolata
in a way
I find google's more advanced stuff hard to find though
somniloquy
somniloquy is now known as somnipubbage
mexon
I don't think I've ever used any of its advanced stuff
Which is what's so great about Google, I guess. I've never had to.
_mo
see thats the problem with over simplifyed - advanced stuff gets hard to find
_mo uses advanced MB stuff all the time -_-
mexon
Sure, you do, and so do I, but hopefully the majority of users in the future will be casual, once a week or so, users
Shepard
we have to points of view here.. the users who just wan't to look up things and are new to mb. and the "power users" who want to reach everything from one page (i don't want to click through 10 pages when entering an AR). and somehow you have to bring the new users into the possibilities. if it's to simplified they won't enter new data :)
mexon
There's always the possibility of having two front pages
cikkolata
but still, I like the idea of having a nice simple page for people to start from. a lot of people don't need to see most of the links we have
_mo
*that* is true
we need a.. *stupid users interface*
:p
cikkolata
if I'm anything to go by, there are so many links that they don't really see what they want to do
mexon
"Products" is weird
_mo
thats true
mexon
"Download" too
Come to think of it, I just wrote a gigantic email about those specific links, and even now I can't remember what they do.
g0llum
mexon: heh, what if you could choose the mb homepage to be simple/advanced :)
_mo
thats ideal
eMb is away: FORMAT NOOOOO
SenRepus
yes. simplicity is a really important thing IMO
mexon
We already have the ability to configure the sidebar.
It's an extension of that idea.
Just having it off for new users would be a big help
_mo
yes but I don't want it to go away!
g0llum
but i wrote that in the e-mail: make MB googlish, and it will crush under the users weight
mexon
So you switch it on in your preferences.
_mo
havign it off for new users, yes
g0llum
they have like 100s of servers
no reason for bad information structure, though :)
mexon
You mean everyone doing a "search everything" search?
Or do you mean clicking through 10 pages to get to the bit they want?
g0llum
no, meaning "appeal to everyone" approach
mexon
Configurability is good.
Although google's getting panned for introducing it now...
SenRepus
google is way to simple, that seems like an extreme example to shoot for
_mo
I agree
we need t ofind the golden middle road
mexon
Well, I disagree, but you knew that already :-)
_mo
so its extreme simplicity or bust with you then? :p
Shepard
google is that simple because the programmer had no idea of html when starting it and they just kept it that way
_mo
lol
mexon
Nah, just registering my fundamentalist point of view
_mo USES YAHOO!
Shepard
really
mexon
Choice is good
_mo
yaoo is a bit more complex
SenRepus
maybe google would be ok for the light MBer who just wants to look at an album
mexon
Exactly
_mo would like to note that he uses a verion of yahoo that is in internet archive bercause he dislikes the new layout though
My point is that the ideal world has 1000000 light MBers and 10000 heavy MBers
_mo headbangs to 'heavy' MB
We're all hardcore here >:)
g0llum
Shepard: lol
SenRepus
the IDEAL world has 100% heavy MBers who dont make mistakes and are super smart.
