HMA: Would you consider not being a stroppy child for a moment?
Perhaps keep your toys in the pram for 30 seconds?
HairMetalAddict
Watch your mouth, kid.
rodbegbie
The topic has been hashed out for months on the mailing list dedicated to style issues.
The issues, pro & con, have been thought through.
ojnkpjg
to be fair, the deluge of email made a lot of people stop reading
especially after the +1 -1 thing
HairMetalAddict
By <1% of moderators, hidden amongst a pile of "waah, I want a trumpet AR"-type posts that ran off people who actually preferred spending time actually modding.
rodbegbie
Perhaps, and I'm just throwing this out here, the change has been made for a reason.
inhouseuk
rodbegbie: what was the reason?
rodbegbie
That it improves the quality of the data, and will make it easier to change to a better database schema in the future.
HairMetalAddict
There is no change. Such a drastic change can not under any circumstances be decided by such a tiny amount of people on an insignificant mailing list that scares off the most active moderators.
fuchs
rodbegbie: by breaking the data until this is implemented?
soccos
is there a summary of the discussion somewhere?
rodbegbie
OK, well, rather than stroppily plugging your fingers in your ears, going "lahlahlah" and changing everything back, you might like to, i don't know, actually enter into the discussion now.
rodbegbie: at the moment it is possible to identify tracks that have more than one artist (because they have .feat). How are you going to identify them now?
ojnkpjg
x (feat. y) -> x & y causing parent album to become VA
fuchs
rodbegbie: well try to answer my latest mail instead of getting of topic in the thread, all the reasons are explained there
rodbegbie: you are adding more inconsitencies than there were before
ojnkpjg
there's no primary album artist for VA albums
so stuff gets hard to find
if AR were fully integrated, it might not be so bad
rodbegbie
ojnkpjg: No-one's advocated changing albums by one artist into VA
HairMetalAddict
Change one situation but not another. Yes, that makes things *so much* better.
rodbegbie
The new SG5 specifically says that you should only do this when there is no "primary artist"
HairMetalAddict
You can't see it, but that sentence included enough eye rolling to cause a headache.
ojnkpjg
primary artist where, though?
inhouseuk
rodbegbie: that is one inconsistency that has been introduced. One style for VA albums another for single artist
ojnkpjg
what if the track has no primary artist, but the album does
rodbegbie
then that's the primary artist.
Tom Jones is the primary artist on "Reload" the album.
fuchs
rodbegbie: so then all the reverting mods _are_ correct, and it's no mod war
MrQwerty` joined the channel
rodbegbie
He's a collaborater with The Cardigans on "Burning Down The House"
rodbegbie: what if the same track is included on a single artist album?
ojnkpjg
personally, i think it should wait until AR is integrated into the UI
just add the appropriate AR links for now, maybe?
and maybe a note
tru
new SOAD (hyptontize) is a very good album.
rodbegbie
I believe there's already an RFE out there (and if there isn't, there should be) that allows you to attach a "VA" album to an "main" artist.
ojnkpjg
that'd make it pretty easy to change to something better when everything's ready
HairMetalAddict
All of this should wait until then. But some people have decided that jumping the gun is a good thing.
rodbegbie
inhouseuk: Then it is "feat Artist 2", because Artist 1 is the primary artist for the album.
ojnkpjg
(UI and tagger, i should have said)
rodbegbie
HMA: A lot of people thought this was a good thing.
fuchs
rodbegbie: so this does add inconsitency, because you have the song listed in 5 version: David Bowie - Under Pressure, David Bowie - Under Pressure (feat. Queen), Queen - Under Pressure, Queen - Under Pressure (feat. David Bowie) and finally Queen & David Bowie - Under Pressure
rodbegbie
?
ojnkpjg
were they people who had intimate knowledge of the DB, UI, and tagger implications?
i stopped reading after a while
too much email
HairMetalAddict
Fuchs said it better than I could in his mod note: "trongersoll, read the IRC logs from today (since 4pm) you can easily find 10 people rejecting this proposal there, and not much more contributed to the discussion on the list, and not everybody who took part in the list discussion agreed with the proposal. In fact it was far from becoming a consensus there."
fuchs
rodbegbie: it's how the track is listed on the album releases
rodbegbie
HMA: Whose fault is that?
Seriously.
How would you have handled it better?
ojnkpjg
does it matter whose fault it was
if anybody's
rodbegbie
How would you poll every person who wants to express an opinion?
And notify them?
HairMetalAddict
"It was far from becoming a consensus there." Says more than a lot.
ojnkpjg
i don't like feat., really, because it doesn't tell you much
