i should get familiar with the code and db structure so i can do more than bitch to myself when i don't like something

just out of curiosity, why are you using c for simple tools like this?

because i am a dinosaur

i'm just very used to writing in C

most of the stuff i do for work is in perl

but my first instinct is to write anything in C

i've been programming in it long enough that i have little libraries of functions to do all the unpleasant things in C more easily

so it's probably just as fast for me

i think i have become emotionally attached to C

C is ok, i like it too. but not for parsing strings :p

especially when i can use python or perl

parsing strings is no fun, but if you do it enough times, it gets to be no big deal

it's also very easy to make mistakes parsing strings

which turn into security problems

which is a good thing, no doubt

the stuff i do at work is mostly CGI programming, and i do all of that in perl

at work i mostly code in PHP

I think Dave Mathews and Tim Whoeverthehell is stupid looking and that artists like that should be treated as discogs does it, but for now we cant do anything with them

One suggestion was to pick (perhaps randomly if not known) one artist for the track->artist relation and then add AR links for any extra artists.

the only issue with that, is that to generate the actual (proper) artist name, the client still needs to be amusingly clever

ANd whatever algorithm you used, there'd always be some edge case where someone complained "It should be 'Monkey Butlers vs. Spankthron", not "Spankthron vs. Monkey Butlers'"

we could add one more meta table (thus denormalizing further) that keeps track of the AR links...

it could also do some name premangling to make dumber clients do something sane
