      • inhouseuk
        just a few interface changes
      • g0llum
        ding!
      • else it would have taken much longer, of course
      • teleGUISE
you mean there was already a artist id spot in the db for each track even though it was a single artist or not?
      • g0llum
        yes
      • inhouseuk
        yes, already there and used
      • g0llum
mac and sac, as well as move_album mess with the track artists
      • this had to be adjusted
      • and the showartist page
      • teleGUISE
ah... so a little smarter usage of what we had
      • so when's this going live?
      • g0llum
the good thing is, that now the disputed Styleguide change can be put into action again
      • teleGUISE
and do we think MBtagger is going to be made current?
      • duncf has quit
      • cuz I have to say I support Picard.. but it has some quirks and issues that MBtagger doesn't
      • or maybe I just now how to workaround them better .. anyhow ;)
      • inhouseuk
also remember it doesn't support trm
      • teleGUISE
I still use MBtagger 95% of the time.. cuz of the issues I found w/Picard and when it takes 5minutes to tag 1 album .. it's a little frustrating..
      • g0llum
        mb_tagger, almost certainly not
      • teleGUISE
gee..imagine that... ;) ru is becoming like Intel .. force the user to upgrade ;)
      • g0llum
it's going live, once we've tested it.
      • g0llum grins
      • teleGUISE
well I protest! Guess all my non mix albums will still be tagged with MBtagger then... and ill figure out what to do with the others..
      • inhouseuk
and announced the change properly to users and customers I hope
      • teleGUISE
Yea... one thing I always thought MB should have is little blurbs... along the way.. to guide people along
      • it assumes everyone reads the wiki front to back.. and we all know that just doesn't happen
      • I know the little blurbs then require more maitenance to keep current... but there has to be a spot we could set up as a blurb in each wiki page that could make use of it.. where as updating the wiki would still update the blurb
      • s/maitenance/maintainence
      • gee I cant spell today.. thats maintenance :)
      • inhouseuk thinks an irc client with a builtin spellchecker would be useful
      • g0llum
you are familiar with the wikidocs concept?
      • asdfqwerty joined the channel
      • teleGUISE
i dont know if that makes sense to anyone...
      • g0llum
this would be wikidocs v. II
      • currently, it supports transclusion of full pages
      • but i'm afraid, ru and i are the only mb_server coders as it is
      • and i'm getting the feeling i'm putting to much time into it as of lately
      • s/to/too
      • inhouseuk
to be honest the current MB documentation is scattered all over the place and needs a serious makeover
      • nechto13
i personally would like MB to have a sitemap so that it would be easier to find all thelp pages, but i'd never suggest that would take precedence over track and album aliases or disasterrelief
      • teleGUISE
that's for sure.... that's why I know having blurbs would add more insult to injury... but.....
      • nechto13
        *help pages
      • inhouseuk
the libmusicbrainz documentation is almost useless
      • slaad joined the channel
      • teleGUISE
docs are always the fault of most 'free' projects.. unfortunately
      • look at LAME & EAC if it weren't for the huge user base there wouldn't be squat
      • inhouseuk
true, but I've also seen some of the best documentation ever on free projects as well
      • g0llum
if you have time to think about stuff, review the graphs here: http://wiki.musicbrainz.org/ObjectModel, and here: http://wiki.musicbrainz.org/NextGenerationSchema
      • we, the developers certainly don't like writting docs :p
      • we have enough non-devs who could help
      • teleGUISE
yea.. but it's also hard to get the developers to speak... and then speak english to people who would/could
      • g0llum
the mb-devs are very communicative people, i think.
      • and most can express them very well (me excluded) ;)
      • themselves
      • inhouseuk
the trouble with non-devs writing the docs, is they need to understand it first
      • teleGUISE
thats what I meant by getting them to speak and then speak english... they need to understand what it is they are writing about
      • g0llum
that's a bad excuse, we're hanging out here, and one could always ask
      • look at the AdvancedRelationShip types in the wiki, matthew_exon and others figured it out themselves
      • anyway.
      • the biggest change in the new database schema would be
      • teleGUISE
I'm bad at writing that stuff since I want to know the technical aspects of things which isn't really necessary when trying to write docs for users
      • g0llum
a wiki-style editing for field values, where changes are applied automatically but can be reverted easily
      • we'll need to think about album/artist locking, how that would affect the new editing scheme
      • moving objects around in the structure would still be mods, like they are handled today (voting, delayed and unreversible apply)
      • teleGUISE
I like locking... it would save a lot of the stupid redundant votes/edits lots of us have to make
      • nechto13
i'd definitely contribute to writing documentation especially if someone would provide some sort of direction as to what the result should look like
      • g0llum
internationalisation was a big issue, and we need some input if we got it right
      • inhouseuk
for commercial use, locking is essential
      • teleGUISE
i could see that.. cuz they want to know if today the database says this.. that if its correct tomorrow it will say the same
      • inhouseuk
yup, without an accidental edit getting through that corrupts it
      • teleGUISE
and not something obscure cuz there are 40 abstains and it finally became accepted
      • g0llum
most of the RFE's were developed with the current schema and workflows in mind
      • i just ask of you to review the new schema, and think how it would fit there
      • inhouseuk
I'll have a look at it later when I have a few hours
      • g0llum
        good
      • teleGUISE
it appears short enough to be all printable.. I do better with that stuff in print..
      • g0llum
i had to use Din-A2 format to fit all the tables into the ERM
      • and it's only the new ones ;)
      • teleGUISE
        well... the main scope anyhow
      • g0llum
you'll be the person who knows if labels/catno/ean/upc etc. are in the right place
      • teleGUISE
        :)
      • MrQwerty has quit
      • MrQwerty joined the channel
      • so was any/part of this written (code wise) or since just discussed not yet?
      • ruaok joined the channel
      • uh oh.. hide ;)
      • ruaok
        moing everyone!
      • teleGUISE
        Hola
      • ruaok
that's the german mexican version of moin
      • teleGUISE
i guess everyone took my advice ... and did Hide ;)=
      • asdfqwerty has quit
      • ruaok
        smart folks
      • teleGUISE
and the leave me here to fend for myself, what a support team
      • s/the/they
      • so are you home sweat home now?? I didnt recall seeing anything beyond Sunday on the summit page
      • geez s/sweat/sweet... i really need that irc client with a dictionary
      • ruaok
        yes and no.
      • I'm in my sweet home of Hamburg.
      • teleGUISE
inhouseuk: hmmm looked up a psu by atx v2.0 spec and it doesn't show a -5v rail...
      • ruaok
but I'm not back in cali. not until dec 13
      • inhouseuk
        that's strange
      • teleGUISE
oh... so is it all play till then? or going to meet up with some others that werent able to make it to the summit?
      • ruaok
it never was all play.... I am working on pimpmytunes right now.
      • teleGUISE
that was a enermax psu too...
      • ruaok
then on thursday its on to london.
      • where I will cook dinner for inhouseuk and a bunch of others
      • and have a board meeting.
      • and meet with last fm.
      • and write pimpmytunes
      • inhouseuk
        when is the board meeting?
      • ruaok
        friday
      • teleGUISE
ah... you get the meet that inhouse uk guy... he seems to be a pretty cool guy
      • ruaok nods
      • is this a first?
      • inhouseuk
ruaok has already met me earlier in the year
      • ruaok
        what a first?
      • teleGUISE
        u 2 meeting...
      • ruaok
        nope.
      • this is the 4th reasonable large meeting of brainerz in the UK
      • though this will be my first attempt to get people seriously schnockered
      • teleGUISE
wow... who else is typical for a UK meet?
      • ruaok
rj, russ, nikki, rjmunro, john carter
      • teleGUISE
Russ is aka last fm, correct?
      • ruaok
        inhouseuk of course, djce, soccos
      • ruaok nods
      • teleGUISE
soccos?... that one doesnt ring any bells.. must be a behind the scene'r
      • ruaok
paul sharpe. fairly large cash donor.
      • and all around great guy.
      • teleGUISE
        soccos is aka Paul Sharpe?
      • ruaok nods
      • ah..so correct a behind the scene'r but a verrrry important one ;)-
      • ruaok
more periphery than behind the scenes
      • teleGUISE
so we haven't reached video teleconferencing status yet huh?
      • ruaok
        we could...
      • but, things are so very informal that its not interesting to watch
      • teleGUISE
bringing all the guys from the Hamburg summit to the ones unavailable in the UK
      • i gather... i just thought maybe when you guys did start cranking on real ideas... having live input from the others might help...or if not the hang up button always works ;)
      • SenScrooge has quit
      • ruaok
        we had a PERFECT balance.
      • teleGUISE
        inhouseuk: ok.. now i can't find a Enermax psu with a -5v rail ;)
      • ruaok
any more and we would've gotten less done. any less and we would've represented fewer viewpoints
      • teleGUISE
that's good.. G' popper in earlier and sounded like things went well.. and some real progress was and is to be made
      • s/popper/popped
      • that or you had him so schnockered he doesn't recall
      • ruaok
nope. none of us got schnockered enough to even record the drinking song.
      • perhaps I can try that in london :=)
      • teleGUISE
inhouseuk: gosh site speed is pathetic...makes MBrainz look like a Ferrari ;) ... wow.. had to go back to ATX 1.3 to find a -5v rating
      • drinking song?? did you do the Ziggy chant?
      • ruaok
we wanted to record some drinking song.
      • so we could AR ourselves. :-)
