i do look at that when voting, but I look more for patterns of edits that show leap-before-looking, or worse, poor interactions with other mods
slander
vote-before-looking also has a negative effect on non-mainstream data
it's frustrating when someone is spoonfed all the relevant information and still votes no
g0llum
i think the notes should be closer to the radiobuttons, i have the inline album display for add album mods activated, and i have to scroll down to read the notes about the album. if they were nearer, it would be much easier to take the notes into account as well
DJKC
while people are active - is there any layed out or preferred style somewhere for large collaborations? IE a series of album where each track has 2-10 different artists collaborating?
g0llum
slander: we discussed that we should require a note for a NO-vote, so i guess this will be incorporated sometime
slander
i like that idea
DJKC
and for whether should use / or the Japanese seperator dot should be used for listing them...
dupuy
DJKC - is there no group name that could be used as the primary artist?
with the 2-10 collaborators listed via AR links?
g0llum gotta get some sleep, good n8 yall
(when that comes through?)
DJKC
dupuy: no. It's solo artists and individual members of various groups on each rtack
*track
they're all in hello!project
but depending on how you count that production company is 47 or so girls
or more if you count their soccer team
dupuy
I really find that primary artist = long list of artists who only collaborate on that track is pretty useless
if they're all in hello!project, and the album is in some way connected with that, I would say that's the best choice for the artist
DJKC
dupuy: that's a company though
production company, that is
like crediting Arista Entertainment or similar as an artist
dupuy
there are already other entries where that is done
DJKC
basically the series is "Lets throw a random assortment of our artists in a both and have them sing kids songs"
there's a similar one of Folk songs
dupuy
games, mostly, but not entirely, or look at the Disney releases
DJKC
and some do only have 1-2 people on a track
so it's messy
dupuy
sure, but do those 2 people collaborate on anything else, ever?
if not, you have an artist which has performed exactly one track
what's the point?
i'm not going to find that useful in my mp3 tags
DJKC
they probably do
since there are ~6-7 in the kids song series and 5 in the folks song there's bound to be overlapping combos
dupuy
i just think that AR links will handle that sort of detail much better than primary artist names
DJKC
outside of that h!p likes to do random combos in concert performances when they do whole company concerts and not individual group/artists
dupuy: I'd agree. On the other hand, there are tracks actually acredited to Hello! Project
dupuy
the point is that when you file the mp3s etc. wouldn't it make more sense to have them under h!p
DJKC
and those are all ones where it's every member
at the time they were made, anyway, so tracks with 20-45 singers on them
whereas these just have a subset of the total membership and aren't credited that way
dupuy: I file them under VA, that's where it makes the most sense to me ^^;
slander
are there any other cases where the published accreditation is overwritten by mb style to make the data more useful?
dupuy
with the AR links, the ambiguity is eliminated, so doesn't seem to be a problem
slander
^overridden
eaon has quit
dupuy
that statement probably applies to 1/4 the data in MB
slander
i would be less wary of doing that if search were more inclusive
dupuy
since published cover art tends to have strange formatting (not just in .jp) etc.
ZeroGravitas joined the channel
it's unclear how the AR stuff will interact with search
wheels has left the channel
DJKC
dupuy: I do see the point in putting them under h!p, it just feels odd since there are tracks actually credited to h!p so artificialy putting others under there makes it unclear if you're not really familiar with the company which were actualy released that way and which were put under there because it made more sense than entering 5-10 names in a string
dupuy
that's what album annotations are for!
because, most people really aren't worried too much by that distinction
if they even realize it exists
DJKC
heh
dupuy
hell, most MB users can't even read those damn squiggly lines
DJKC
sorry, I'm just thinking of the extreme fanboys h!p has
ZeroGravitas
ZG's continuing server install travails: "ql:/home/httpd/musicbrainz/mb_server/admin/sql/CreateFunctions.sql:20: ERROR: language "plpgsql" does not exist Mon Jan 17 22:56:23 2005 : HINT: You need to use "createlang" to load the language into the database". Oh well, will try that tomorrow.
DJKC
there's a <random> champion show in Japan, different topic each week
dupuy
I know, and really, for those people, you put a literal copy of the entire credits into the album annotation
DJKC
they did one for morning musume. The final round between three guys was a quiz one
g0llum
ZeroGravitas: djce said to me today that he will create a pgz archive of the whole server.
DJKC
one organized 7 CDs by release order in about 3 seconds, across the room, looking only at the disc
and recited group/album name/release date
g0llum
you probably like working on the server, but if you don't you might want to wait :)
ZeroGravitas
what's pgz?
DJKC
dupuy: they'd enter it exact, if they just didn't memorize it completely and not bother otherwise
g0llum
a zip archive of the whole server
dupuy
DJKC, that's pretty insane, but not too surprising
cikkolata
tgz?
DJKC
it was an amusing study in extreme fanboyism
and of course, a 19 year old, over weight college boy with a large mole won
g0llum
arf. you're right
ZeroGravitas
ah! :)
g0llum
close enough :p
ZeroGravitas
anyway, i've got a 1/2 working db, so i'll stop crashing the conversation & start trying hacking on that.
