hmm. I may have been spending too much time at musicbrainz lately, I dreamt that someone finally added an album in arabic :/
      • ruaok
        heh. :)
      • erm, would you like me to arrange that? I have a friend who I could call in a favor with...
      • cikkolata
        ooh.
      • it's been annoying me for ages, there's not one single thing in arabic or any of the indian scripts.
      • ruaok
        I'll ask my friend tomorrow.
      • cikkolata
        :D
      • I hate freedb.
      • cikkolata sighs
      • #dog# is voting no for stuff now. I guess he's realised changing the case of things wasn't going to get him anywhere.

        ruaok: another very short patch:
      • ---
      • > if (strcmp(newName.c_str(), fileName.c_str()))
      • cikkolata pokes DJKC
      • ruaok: hmm, unless that screws up on windows... didn't think of that :\
      • canidae scratch his head a bit
      • seems like tunepimp won't move a file if "file metadata" == "server metadata" even though if the filenames differ :\

For the love of Goddess, "moderator" #dog# must be STOPPED!
      • I've cleaned up his mess (and a couple others had already fixed some), but this bonehead just won't stop with the dumb mods. And they're all automatic caps changes, so no vote.
      • HairMetalAddict sets phaser to KILL
      • canidae
        HairMetalAddict: tried mailing him?
      • HairMetalAddict
Er, yep. As well as hoping he gets an e-mail for every mod note... *evil*
      • canidae
        heh
      • HairMetalAddict
Actually using that mod note to keep track of which ones are cleaned up (oldest mods are cleaned up but no note). So I see if there's new ones (no mod note). But if he gets an e-mail for each note... so much the better...
      • canidae
        :)
      • HairMetalAddict
ruaok - we need your super powers. Get in that phone booth and change into your super-suit to go after the evil #dog# !
      • *afraid to check how he's been voting*
      • Bleh, I shouldn't have checked. Votes NO on all "squiggly line" album submissions, correct merge albums mods...
      • *sigh*
      • If only stupid people could "forget" to breathe...
      • cikkolata
I was complaining about his no votes earlier.
      • ruaok blinks
      • ruaok
morning er, time of day kids!
      • how does the cleanup of #dog# ?
      • do you guys get the feeling that it might be some ass sitting and hitting NO on all the votes that come up in the inline voting window?
      • I wonder if I can turn off his inline voting...
      • HairMetalAddict
It's his moderating that's the BIG pain in the buttocks. Not counting TRM submissions, he's only had 1 correct moderation and it was a vote type.
      • ruaok
        oh, ah. ok.
      • HairMetalAddict
      • Incorrect mods that are going through without votes. :-/
      • Everything's been cleaned up. By me and a couple others.
      • ruaok
        Ha~!
      • #dog# did nothing but case changes.
      • HairMetalAddict
Yep, he does case changes, then tagged his files (sending TRMs) album by album.
      • I caught him online yesterday at one point, changed them back the second he changed them. He kept rechanging them 3-4 times. Cat-mouse game. ;-)
      • ruaok
        dumb-ass.
      • HairMetalAddict
        to say the least. :-D
      • ruaok
well, that should be more difficult now.
      • HairMetalAddict can stop checking the dog's mod list every time he opens his browser now
      • HairMetalAddict
        hehe
      • HairMetalAddict goes back to being waist-deep in Perl code
      • cikkolata
        what did you do?
      • I really hope that was a real email address he used.
      • cikkolata goes back to doing what she always does, sitting and pondering three zillion things, like why mpd's random is incredibly not random.
      • dupuy: around?
      • ruaok
cikkolata: coding a random function is really hard to do.
      • I've tried it three times in my life and I consider myself to have failed each time.
      • cikkolata
I understand that, but it's playing the same few bands over and over with one or two other songs here and there.
      • everyone seems to complain about xmms, but xmms's shuffle works fine for me.
      • arse. what makes the track times get completely messed up? (the sort where most tracks are several seconds and the last track or two are almost the entire length of the album)?
      • ruaok
        got url?
      • cikkolata
      • I think the last track is a data track.
      • HairMetalAddict
      • ruaok
cikkolata: see, those track times originally came from mp3s, so they suck ass.
      • HairMetalAddict is subscribed to WAY too many artists.
      • HairMetalAddict
        :-P
      • ruaok
but there is no cdindex id to derive correct track times from. :-(
      • cikkolata
        they came from mp3s?
      • ruaok
back in the day when we collected times from mp3s.
      • cikkolata
but that's a CD that was only added a few days ago
      • HairMetalAddict
All the partial Kazaa downloads and fake files musta made that a lot of fun. ;-)
      • cikkolata
        it's still open for voting
      • and I've seen it on other CDs too, but I can't remember why they get like that
      • ruaok
I wonder if its a freedb import and the freedb record is borked.
      • yeah, the freedb entry is borked.
      • cikkolata: rock / 53115606 should be imported instead.
      • cikkolata
but I'm still wondering why it's borked in the first place
      • ruaok
        because freedb sucks ass?
      • the track times in the other freedb record match the ones we imported.
      • cikkolata
        :/
      • ruaok
so our code works fine, but the freedb record is borked.
      • HairMetalAddict
Because freedb sucks ass. <--- period, no question mark necessary ;-)
      • ruaok grins
      • cikkolata
yeah, but I'm sure someone gave an explanation once for why the times got that way... (that wasn't freedb randomly messing things up)
      • like some weird copy protection stuff
      • ruaok
        that's quite plausible.

      • dupuy
it's not really freedb's fault the TOCs are borked, it's the clients that can't handle/undo the copy-protection borkedness
      • cikkolata: was there a particular question, or was it just the data track stuff
      • that das omen single has a copy protection data track, but you all seem to have figured it out
      • I'm not sure why those things always end up with 10 second tracks...
      • anyhow, i submitted a delete for the last track there

dupuy: I was wondering what the best way of finding out what capitalisation to use for other languages would be
      • spanish looks completely wrong with english capitalisation, but I can't really tell someone that it's wrong if I can't tell them what's right.
      • dupuy
the question isn't so much "what are the capitalization rules for language X" as "what are the title capitalization rules for language X"
      • cikkolata
        well, yeah
      • that's what I was referring to.
      • dupuy
as a fairly fluent, but non-native, speaker of Spanish, I don't actually think the english-style title caps look bad in spanish or portuguese
      • they look crap in french or italian, where there are a lot of contractions
      • Je n'entends pas looks bad in anything other than sentence caps
      • cikkolata agrees there.
      • for portuguese, i'm divided about é or É (is)
      • e (and) obviously doesn't get caps
      • cikkolata
one letter words capitalised look weird to me.
      • dupuy
        that's my feeling too
      • so I've generally gone with é but I wonder if it is really correct
      • cikkolata
I would probably guess that portuguese uses sentence capitalisation like... a lot of other stuff.
      • uh, stuff wasn't a very good word there. like a lot of other languages seem to.
      • http://216.239.59.104/search?q=cache:www.wordba... agrees for spanish... the portuguese one is the same, I think, but it's badly worded.
      • dupuy
it's certainly true that there is nothing out there supporting non-sentence capitalization as a rule, nonetheless it does seem fairly common in practice, and nobody has complained about applying English-style caps rules
      • cikkolata
is the practise just people hitting guess case though?
      • dupuy
        not only
      • you see it pretty often on album covers themselves
      • cikkolata
        that gives me a 404
      • ruaok goes back to work on AR (still!)
      • dupuy
you probably need to have the right cookies... anyhow, it shows as Bohemio y Poeta on the cover
      • but covers often have all-caps, all-lowercase, and random others
      • cikkolata
        like english there then.
      • dupuy
if you had to pick a *rule*, I would say sentence caps is the way to go, but I like english style title caps, so I'm not going to push it myself (or mod the thousands of existing titles)
