To me, xiph.org is one of the more successful OSS projects.

What kind of troubles?

id3v2 tag troubles -- winamp and win xp don't like some of the tags that the tagger writes.

Ogg nneds to be reethought as file-oriented ratehr than stream oriented

seeking or editing an Ogg requires iterative refinement

and give you need to read the codebooks from the front for Vorbis anyway, the stream orientation is bogus

but in the context of media, the stream idea is you can join in the middle and be able to display data

which comes from the broadcast mindset

with uncompressed data this is trivial

but MPEG (and Ogg) have this model where there are excluded bit patterns from the data that indicate start of frame

and that bugs me.

Seeking to find the first frame in MPEG audio is a nasty (non-trivial) problem.

and Ogg has the same design flaw

in ogg's defense, there is a good reference implementation that hides all this crap from the end user.

and the ref. imp. is readily available, unlike MPEG.

its the python id3 lib, it just says "broken frame error"
