an SACD is currently giving me some grief, what should i do?
      • cheezmo2_ joined the channel
      • soundjuicer tells me to go edit it, it didn't exist so i added it, but the number of tracks it's read doesn't agree with the number of tracks listed, and i can't attach a CD TOC because it's an SACD
      • and just generally urgh; could someone experienced give me some pointers please?
      • evelyn
nattie, SACD has two layers: the SACD layer (no disc ID can be attached to it) and the CD layer which is what you are reading
      • or rather, hybrid SACD is like that
      • SACD on its own doesn't have the CD layer
      • nattie
right, i should probably have put it as a hybrid then
      • evelyn
so, you need to work out if there was a separate SACD and hybrid SACD release. if you think that there wasn't (discogs can give you a good idea) especially if things like barcode etc match, you can add a new medium to the existing SACD release which is the hybrid SACD CD layer

      • if you like you can put a link to the release and I can give you a pointer
      • nattie
      • i've got it to the point where soundjuicer will at least recognise it
      • though it still has the random extra track at the end
      • evelyn
      • yeah, so Discogs confirms it's a hybrid SACD (looks like the only release)
      • do you have a SACD player? that's basically the only way to confirm if the SACD has that extra track
      • nattie
        i don't
      • evelyn
ah, OK, yeah, most people don't
      • if you like, you can add the SACD layer with that track listing, but you don't have to since we don't really know other than the packaging. and there'd be no way to confirm if it has that bonus trackk anyway
      • nattie
i could go check the regular CD players downstairs to see if they both come up with 16 tracks
      • evelyn
oh no, that doesn't really matter, they will also read the last track
      • nattie
or if i ever meet someone in person who has an SACD player, i can check then, and come back to it at that point
      • pew has quit
      • nattie leaves it as good enough for that point, and if anyone else has it and the right equipment, they are very welcome to add things
      • s/for that point/for now/ (not sure how that managed to sneak in)
      • evelyn
I have always wanted a SACD player but they are so expensive and I only have like 3 SACDs
      • nattie
yeah, i think this is the only one i have
      • i've got maybe one (pair of) friend(s) who might have one, so i'll ask them someday when i see them and we have time and so on
      • evelyn
yeah! you've done a good job! (I can't comment on style if it's classical but it looks OK to me)
      • nattie
        it's folk, and gorgeous singing
      • evelyn
actually , a lot of blu ray players can actually read SACD, so if you have a Sony blu ray player it might play SACDs
      • nattie
we literally just packed the blu ray player away, but i'll have a look in a few weeks' time in that case
      • evelyn
unfortunately this one seems to just be stereo, but some people have a nice home cinema setup and they can experience the SACD in 5.1 surround sound
      • which is kind of neat, in a way
      • nattie clearly needs to cultivate some more well-equipped people!
      • I had a nice copies of the two Fairport Convention SACDs that were released in Japan, those were only stereo but they were really good transfers from original tapes and were really nicely packaged. However I sold them for some rather ridiculous money to a friend who was a big fan and had been after them for ages.
      • nattie
oh, and Japanese released can get so expensive
      • nattie saw an EP listed for something like USD 300
      • then someone else listed another copy (used and with less-fancy packaging) for USD 15, so i ordered that and hope it's good
      • the $300 one seems to be an outlier, though the other ones aren't cheap either
      • evelyn
worth just saving the search on ebay and pouncing when one comes up for a good price

Hi! I have a query regarding adding external URLs to a `Single` release. Should I add the URL to the associated recording also or should it be added only to the release or only to the recording?
      • evelyn
if it's a single (rather than just a standalone track), add it to the release
      • _lucifer
what's the difference between a single release and a stand alone track ?
      • say, i find a random track on youtube and find its missing in MB and I want to add it to the database. Should I add it as a Single release or a standalone track ?
      • evelyn
in practice there often isn't a difference https://musicbrainz.org/doc/Standalone_Recording
      • yeah , youtube thing would probably be a standalone recording, but note the advice not to enter any old dubious MP3 file you find around the internet
      • so some video on youtube uploaded by a fan would not be something you should enter.
      • but, you could enter a track on bandcamp (although you should probably enter that as a single if it's released as such)
      • _lucifer
yes, i understand that. i am talking about the videos uploaded officially by the label.
      • thanks for the help evelyn :D
      • evelyn
yeah you should probably enter those as standalone tracks
