Why not just leave it the way it is?
      • People can always edit it later if need be
      • unless you've already added the release and are now the "people" who are wondering whether to edit it, and now is "later" :P

      • so, I'm linking this again, but... how was I able to create a release with no mediums? http://musicbrainz.org/release/abe16da4-50ce-42...
      • chirlu`
The (separate) “Add medium” edit got lost or failed for some reason.
      • LordSputnik joined the channel
      • flamingspinach
well, I guess I'll add it manually, but how strange
      • usually the release editor doesn't let you submit a new release unless there's more than one medium on it
      • chirlu`
Yes, but the RE may have failed to get the edit through.
      • It doesn’t happen that rarely.
      • Either a transient connection problem, or there was something wrong with the edit.
      • flamingspinach
it would be nice if it would give me some sort of an error report so I could help fix the issue
      • silent failure is never fun
      • derwin
flamingspinach: I endeavor to enter things correctly the first time, because my workflow has issues downstream if tags/filenames change..
      • flamingspinach
        ah, lol
      • what issues in particular, if I may ask?
      • are you burning tagged media files to CDs or something?
      • derwin
        traktor
      • it doesn't track the updates if the filename changes
      • you have to "relocate"
      • chirlu`
flamingspinach: I know, error reporting in that area is not too good. I’m asking for some improvement in http://tickets.musicbrainz.org/browse/MBS-7931
      • Though that wouldn’t deal with transient failures.

        derwin: ah
      • why not just save filenames according to recording ID :3
      • zas
do i miss something or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Addis_Ababa is missing from areas ?
      • chirlu`
      • zas
it is set as subdivision, not city... it is a capital
      • chirlu`
WP: “As a chartered city (ras gez astedader), Addis Ababa has the status of both a city and a state.”
      • Washington, D.C. is also a subdivision, though Hamburg is not.
      • flamingspinach
I hope we're sourcing our areas from some other database?
      • chirlu`
zas: Make a bug ticket in http://tickets.musicbrainz.org/browse/AREQ if you think it’s a problem.
      • flamingspinach: More or less, it’s mostly based on Wikidata with some Geonames thrown in.
      • flamingspinach
how do we localize areas, btw?
      • zas
not really a problem, but one can expect to easily find it, it is not even written Addis Abeba or Addis Ababa
      • not really intuitive ...
      • chirlu`
zas: There are aliases for both forms, though.
      • flamingspinach: Aliases, too. E.g. https://musicbrainz.org/area/8474f16d-03a0-4a09...
      • flamingspinach
I think it's unfortunate if mbz editors are supposed to curate our database of areas. It would be nice if we could just have it completely imported and synced from somewhere else...
      • zas
yes, but they don't appear when you do a search, i wish we had something indicating it is a exact match for an alias (it displays Ādīs Ābeba subdivision when i'm looking for Addis Adeba city, not that obvious it is the same)
      • flamingspinach
looks like https://musicbrainz.org/user/area_bot is doing this
      • chirlu`
flamingspinach: Only a few, specially designated location editors can edit areas.
      • area_bot is mostly inactive nowadays. It used to auto-import from Wikidata, but there were problems with that, too.
      • flamingspinach
      • (when you set the language to Japanese)
      • er, didn't mean to link to the aliases tab specifically
      • I mean just the fact that it says "Fukuoka" as the main title of the page, and then as a subtitle, "市, in Fukuoka, 日本"
      • localization clearly needs some work lol
      • JesseW joined the channel
      • zas
Ādīs Ābeba search on google gives much less results than Addis Abeba or Addis Ababa, i wonder from where this syntax comes
      • chirlu`
flamingspinach: Yeah, it seems not all strings are translated to Japanese (“Places” not, either).
      • flamingspinach
more importantly shouldn't the main name of the entity shown on the page be the one that's listed under aliases as primary for Japanese locale?
      • rather than the one listed for English locale?
      • chirlu`
If you want to help, the translations are edited on Transifex.
      • flamingspinach
yeah I've added a few myself
      • LordSputnik has left the channel
      • but what I just mentioned sounds more like an issue with the actual server code than the translation pairs
      • one of these days I should set up a sandbox and try to hack on mbz code...
      • chirlu`
The main name is different from the aliases, and in this case it’s in English. zas: For Addis Abeba, it’s probably the official transcription or something.
      • flamingspinach
why is the main name of a japanese location in English, though?
      • chirlu`
That it says “X in Y” instead of some Japanese term is just a missing string, though.
      • flamingspinach
(it seems like being able to have localized main names is a good reason for the locale attributes and primary tag for aliases)
      • Powlow joined the channel
      • chirlu`
It’s more or less random whether a local name or the English name made it into the database, also depending on what the relevant Wikidata contributors did.
      • zas
chirlu`, i think search results suggestions should be displayed using the current locale (here it should display either english Addis Ababa or french Addis-Abeba, instead of Ādīs Ābeba)
      • chirlu`
zas: Yes, I’m working on this (currently it only works for artists).
      • zas
        great ;)

      • chirlu`
Note, “working on this” doesn’t mean it’s the next thing that I will finish. ;-)
      • zas
but in this case the subdivision vs city doesn't help, i think both should be in db
      • chirlu`: i know ;))
      • chirlu`
It’s somewhat broken for artists, too, it will show a random alias if none exists for your language (so you may get a Japanese alias even though you’re French).
      • *on French
      • zas
we did smt about that in Picard if i remember
      • chirlu`
        Yes, I think so too.
      • zas
      • it was
      • somehow related
      • chirlu`
flamingspinach: What you want is http://tickets.musicbrainz.org/browse/MBS-972 (it would display the localized names for entities).
      • flamingspinach
        nice, thanks :)
      • chirlu`: btw what's your username on the site?
      • chirlu`
zas: Yours is http://tickets.musicbrainz.org/browse/MBS-7646, I tend to close AREQ-273 as a duplicate of this.
      • flamingspinach: Just chirlu, without the ` (chirlu was taken here on Freenode).
