        while we're at that, 5.1, 5.2, 6.1, 6.2, 7.1, 7.2, Athmos/DTS:X too? :P
      • kepstin
what about arbitrary ambisonics layouts? ;)
      • reosarevok
Well, we'll want a list of options
      • Leo_Verto
kepstin, at least DTS:X is totally ambisonical, I think Dolby Atmos is too
      • reosarevok
Someone who knows more than I do about different sound things can propose a list, because I literally just know mono, stereo, and that there's stuff with numbers and dots
      • Leo_Verto
reosarevok, the number before the dot is the number of "normal" speakers the number after the number of subwoofers
      • kepstin
well, the numbers just indicate number of full range channels, and if there's a number after a dot, it's an additional number of low frequency effect channels
      • Leo_Verto
oh yeah, channels is a better term when you're talking about tracks
      • CatQuest
there is things with dots? D:
      • I only know stereo/mono
      • (ok so I know about surround sound too, but)
      • Leo_Verto
CatQuest, how many speakers does your desktop system have?
      • CallerNo6
^ which come to think of it, seems arbitrary (treating subwoofers as special)
      • Leo_Verto
well, subwoofers are kinda omnidirectional, so I think it makes sense
      • kepstin
CallerNo6: they're treated specially in the encoding - when played back they need to have a gain boost applied
      • CatQuest
I'm only adding mono/stereo, so there
      • Leo_Verto
kepstin, btw do you know of any music that's been released in an ambisonic format?
      • CatQuest hates excessive bass becasue it hurts
      • I know it's used for movies but it would probably also work for stuff like orchestral music, assuming you go crazy and record a channel per instrument/instrument group
      • kepstin
(basically, the LFE channels are just there to increase the dynamic range of low frequencies, so you get a proper "rumble" from explosions and whatnot in action films)
      • CatQuest
or hurts but it.. well i don't like it i don't know why it's jsut UGH
      • kepstin
Leo_Verto: I've heard of some experimental stuff, but I don't really follow it
      • CatQuest
YTR (yet another reason) I don't go to cinemas anymore
      • CallerNo6
kepstin, do you think that's related to the "5.1" designation? I assumed that was pure marketing.
      • arbenina has quit
      • Leo_Verto
CatQuest, there's good bass and there's excessive bass, but imho a decent amount of "rumble" is really worth it
      • kepstin
CallerNo6: 5.1 comes from the Dolby Digital sound encoding designed for theatres which included 5 channels and an additional low frequency effects channel
      • CatQuest
(other reasons being too expensive, too many people and difficult of hearing because TOO FUCKING LOUD WE§RE GONNA MESS U YOUR EARS WHAT YOU WANNA KNOW WHAT THEY ACTUALLY*SAID* FORGET IT)
      • Leo_Verto
hmm, is there a true 5.2 audio format or does the receiver just distribute the LFE channel to the two subs?
      • kepstin
CallerNo6: not all "5.1" sound systems sold actually support a separately addressable LFE channel tho, some just use a crossover to pull bass out of the main channels
      • Leo_Verto
        or do both
      • kepstin
well, anything with little speakers puts the midrange into the subwoofer :/
      • Leo_Verto
        yeah
      • CallerNo6
kepstin, right, that's what I'm asking. Did that designation come from the "specialness" of the bass channels (needing a different kind of amplification)?
      • Or is it unrelated.
      • ?
      • kepstin
CallerNo6: yes, it's a detail of the dolby digital encoding, the channel needed special handling in the decoder/playback
      • lasconic__ joined the channel
      • CallerNo6
Cool. I learned something. Now I have to decide what I will forget in order to maintain that balance.
      • kepstin
with newer codecs the LFE channel isn't really treated specially any more (although some still use the ~10dB boost for compatibility reasons), so it just indicates the number of dedicated LFE channels.
      • Leo_Verto
nothing, just enter the audio rabbit hole!

Leo_Verto: what do you mean "desktop system"?
      • my laptop I use for working i'm tyoing on right now?
      • lasconic__ is now known as lasconic
      • Leo_Verto
        ah, nevermind then
      • but 2.1 systems (2 speakers with a sub under the table) are pretty common for desktop systems
      • CatQuest
or the mac mini that has the two pc speackers plugged in (actually right now it's plugga into the laptopn because i'm playing a cd her)
      • CatQuest would rip out the thing under the table :D
      • reosarevok
        Thanks! (moved it to style)
      • CatQuest
basically "subwoofer" is a special speaker for bass bass?
      • reosarevok: sorry for rong place
      • Leo_Verto
        yep
      • reosarevok
Leo_Verto, kepstin or whoever, feel free to agree on a list of stuff that we should have (I guess the order should be stereo then mono then other stuff) and add it to STYLE-764 :)
      • BrainzBot
        STYLE-764: Dynamic attributes: Mono/Stereo ? https://tickets.metabrainz.org/browse/STYLE-764
      • CatQuest doesn't understand why anyone would want that. but digress, soem peopel do and are differnt thna me so..
      • CatQuest
pity it was MBS-9300 too (neat number)
      • reosarevok loves ridiculous bass that makes the whole building vibrate
      • kepstin
I've never seen a "2.1" system that actually had a separate LFE channel
      • Leo_Verto
I couldn't imagine live without a subwoofer, at least my desktop system has the crossover set so high, that I can't hear the bass (this time I mean the instrument) in music with the sub turned off
      • ocharles_ is now known as ocharles
      • so yeah, I couldn't live without a sub :P
      • reosarevok
One of my favourite concerts ever was a Sunn O))) one where you could actually feel the waves of sound physically hitting you
      • CatQuest
        ..
      • reosarevok
(but at home I have only my laptop speakers, because the last time I tried to buy external speakers the cats ate the cables :( )
      • kepstin
I use a set of bookshelf speakers that are good down to around ~80Hz on my computer, so it's close enough to full range for most music to sound decent.
      • CatQuest
        reosarevok: wat. srsly?
      • kepstin
I have a sub but I leave it turned off most of the time :/
      • reosarevok
Yup. Well, ate. Chewed through, anyway :D
      • CatQuest
        wtf cats eating wires
      • I've heard of mice and rats doing that but cats?
      • wtf :D
      • kepstin
I really dislike when they do a live concert mix where the bass is so loud that you can't actually hear anything else, it drowns out vocals and whatnot :(
      • CatQuest
kepstin: especially when you're not even *at* the concert but it's some live gig on the park close to where you liveand they do this every summer and all yo uhear is BASSBASS and *whoomp whoom* and SCREAM occasionally
      • kepstin
given the usual subwoofer positioning on large stage concerts, that's actually at its worst when you're up close to the stage, and the mix gets more even if you move back
      • CatQuest
        ¬¬
      • amanmehta joined the channel
      • kepstin
and then you move too far away and the treble stops carrying and it gets bad again
      • Leo_Verto
        shitty bass is shitty
      • CatQuest
i mena, don't get me wrong.. i like.. bass for wnhe it's.. uh supposed ot be there
      • but likeit sounds like a layer of cotton on everything else :/
      • i hate that
      • Leo_Verto
that doesn't sound like good bass to me
      • imho it should underscore the rest of the music
      • CatQuest
that's how most shit is though in places . people just pour more bass ontopof more bass and shit al lto aquitics and the *tohter* fucking instruments
      • reosarevok
Oh, speaking of physicality in music, zas and Leftmost, I assume you've listened to The Haxan Cloak before but if not fix that
      • CatQuest
Leo_Verto: that i totally agree with
      • Leo_Verto
I guess that's also what the bass (instrument) is mostly used for in most genres
      • CatQuest
nothing makes a song better than the fat bass of the dude song *whooom*
      • ughm.. I'm tired and haven't eaten and listenig to konono no1
      • thinking of Motörhead for some reason
      • if yo uadd bass and it's not the instrument Ur doing it RONG :V
      • (some bass beat computer counts as instrument)
      • (I would know :D)
      • that was a jke to luagh at dammit. reo atleast achieves groans :/
